There was a bit of shipping damage, so not off to a good start. It went together easily enough. The issues are that the ladder connection is poorly designed and the materials are not very high quality and the finish is delicate. On the right side, it is a single wood screw that can easily pull out. On the left side there are 2 wood screws between the ladder and the vertical piece but the vertical piece is attached to the rail with 2 half inch wood screws and those can pull out very easily. A small twist of the ladder (like accidentally getting your foot or a vacuum cleaner caught) can pull it out. I converted the wood screws to through bolts and added a couple of pieces to stiffen it. In doing that, the wood splintered very easily and damaged the finish whereas the oak I used drilled cleanly.
What I liked: * The bed is very attractive, and my daughter loves it. * There is plenty of room for a person of normal height to sit at a desk underneath the bed. * It goes together as easily as should be expected. * It's plenty sturdy for a 10-12 year old, though a rambunctious teenager might have you re-tightening the fasteners now and then.
What I didn't like: * The interface between the side rails and side-board, at the ladder, could be more substantial; though I can just buy an additional metal strip at the hardware store and screw it on if in the future I decide that it needs more strength. * The quality control seems good, with one exception: One of the cross braces near the floor wasn't straight and is bowed in about an inch; however, when the bed is assembled, it isn't too noticeable--I just put that one up against the wall, and no one but myself has noticed.
We're very happy with it for the price, and I'd buy another if I needed one. I've just docked one star for the two issues noted above.
I researched quite a bit looking for a loft bed for my 9 year old son. We really didn't want to spend $1000, and most of the beds I found were either $200 (and seemed really cheaply made) or over $1000. So the price on this one was great. I loved the Mission style of the bed and the height looked good. After reading the reviews I decided to take a chance on this one. I am happy to say I am completely satisfied with this bed.
Bed arrived quickly and all pieces were in excellent condition. It took my husband and I working together about 2 hours to put the bed together. Directions were easy to follow. All went smoothly except when putting on the ladder. It seemed a little unsteady so my husband added a strong screw and that worked well. It is true, as some of other reviewers have stated, that there is a big safety sticker at the head of the bed (and some other stickers labeling the parts). Very ugly. I was able to remove by scrubbing off the sticker with a rag and warm water and then removing the rest of the adhesive with the product "goo off". Worked perfectly.
I was relieved that the bed was very solid. There is very little wiggle to the bed at all. It looks great. We ordered the espresso color and it has a nice rich color to it. We have 8 foot ceilings so I was a little concerned about the height, but he has plenty of room when up in the bed.
My son loves the bed and it looks great. For this price, I definitely give it 5 stars.
My mom purchased this loft bed for my 16 yr. old and we were pleased that it arrived in only two boxes and so quickly. However, that was where the "pleased" feelings ended. The instructions had NO words and were all pictures and they were one picture per section and was not explained in a way that made assembly even understandable. For example, the screws that were needed were numbered in the book but did not have numbers on the screws themselves or even on the packages that they came in. So you had to try to figure out which screws went with which section (and they were only different from the other screws by 10 mm). Additionally, the photo instructions had multiple sections that needed to be assemble but all squished into one photo with little arrows pointing to where things were supposed to go. Besides the poor instruction manual, only 1/4 of the wooden pieces were actually labelled with the "letters" that corresponded to the instruction manual so we had to try and figure which pieces (that looked almost identical to one another anyway!!) went with which sections. Then the pieces of wood were supposed to have predrilled holes in the wood and most were not even drilled a tenth of a way into the wood and since you were screwing thick wood screws into real wood pieces with a pathetic, tiny Allen wrench this made assembly nearly IMPOSSIBLE! Once you got the two head/foot board pieces assembled then you had to assemble the two side rail sections and insert those in between the head board/foot board pieces which would've been great EXCEPT THEY DIDN'T FIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So we had to climb a ladder and take a hammer to hit the headboard until we could jam the side rail into the section it was supposed to go in!!!!! The worst part perhaps though was the ladder. They didn't send enough of the wood screws and then one of the wood screws was the wrong type and since we were already short one, we had to try and make it fit! The ladder rungs would not fit into the prefitted sections and assembly was almost impossible. The screws they sent were wood screws that could only be assembled with the one of the 2 tiny allen wrenches that SUCKED! You try screwing in long, thick wood screws into a predrilled hole that was less than half the size needed with an allen wrench!!!!!!!!!! It's impossible!!!!!!!!!! We ended up using a regular wrench to hold onto the allen wrench and trying to put the screws in! Ughhhhh! When it was all done, it took us 6 hours, a LOT of blood, sweat, tears, and lots of swearing to get the bed assembled! I've put together a LOT of furniture in my time but this was BY FAR the absolute WORST piece of furniture I've ever assembled! I would NEVER EVER recommend purchasing this! I will say that it IS very pretty and is perfect for my daughter but I would NEVER do it again! EVER!!!!!!!!! Save yourself the aggravation!
Pros: good value for the money. I've seen similar beds in local furniture stores for hundreds more. The bed is a good height, has a nice looking finish and my son loves it. It also helps make better use of the space in my son's bedroom.
Cons: finish is essentially a veneer glued(?) to the wood of the unit. No, for the price I didn't expect solid cherry wood. However, the veneer was detaching / perking off from several pieces of the bed when it arrived. Also, there were no assembly instructions in the package. I went to the company web site to see if they could be downloaded - there was a link to the manual but it was broken and did nothing. I was able to figure out how to assemble the bed without them but I'm sure I did it the "long way". I sent an email to the company advising of the broken link, the missing manual and asking what adhesive they recommended to reattach the peeling veneer. No response from them at all.
I would have given five stars - knocked one off for the peeling veneer and one for the missing manual, poorly maintained site and lack of response from company.
