Endurance (The Konrath Dark Thriller Collective Book 5) Kindle Edition
WELCOME TO THE WORST BED AND BREAKFAST EVER...
The bed and breakfast was hidden in the hills of West Virginia. Wary guests wondered how it could stay in business at such a creepy, remote location. Especially with its bizarre, presidential decor and eccentric proprietor.
ONCE YOU CHECK IN...
When the event hotel for the national Iron Woman triathlon accidentally overbooked, competitor Maria was forced to stay at the Rushmore. But after checking into her room, she quickly realized she wasn't alone. First her suitcase wasn't where she put it. Then her cell phone was moved. Finally, she heard an odd creaking under the bed. Confusion quickly turned to fear, and fear to hysteria when she discovered the front door was barred and the windows were bricked over. There was no way out.
...YOU'LL BE DYING TO LEAVE
One year later, four new female athletes have become guests of the Inn. Will they escape the horrors within its walls? Or will they join the many others who have died there, in ways too terrible to imagine?

- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2011I read this amazing book a couple of years ago called Afraid by an author I had never heard of, Jack Kilborn. Once reading Afraid, I was waiting for more, which sadly never came. On my last Amazon.com order, I looked up Kilborn and found he had also written under his real name, JA Konrath. And among these titles, I found more Kilborn stuff. I bought two more books without hesitation and smashed through this baby in a week because I just couldn't put it down. In my first sitting I read 70 pages. This book didn't warm up, this book jumped straight into it, which is what I loved about Afraid!
Endurance is this crazy, sick and terrifying horror novel that begins with a woman staying at a creepy in called the Rushmore Inn. The inn is covered in presidential memorabilia. The owner, Eleanor, obsessed with the presidential family and hoping that one of her boys one day will become president. Problem is, her boys are horribly deformed. Every single one of them and they have been using this old run down inn for decades to attract people there and keep them locked up for their own sinister purposes. At the beginning of the book, one woman be becomes of this inn, a triathlon runner that is staying to compete. When she goes missing, her fiancé immediately goes looking for her, accompanied by her brother. 12 months later, they find their way to this horrid little inn, and unlucky for some, so have this year's triathlon competitors. A woman with prosthetic legs, a reporter following her for the scoop and a trio of grandmother, mother and daughter also there to compete. All them of them are about to meet Eleanor and her sick and twisted family and only some of them are going to survive it!
And here I was thinking that Afraid wouldn't let me go. This book was ten times more relentless than afraid and actually had me a bit freaked out at night while reading it alone. The words are spot on, allowing you to imagine this in your head so clearly that you actually wish this would become a film! And every single chapter, from the very first one, ends with some one-liner, some hanging sentence that just makes you want to keep reading. But problem is, there are so many characters and each chapter jumps from character to character so you need to read five odd chapters to get back to that person you are dying to know what happens and by then, you have four more characters you are obsessed with too, so the book is one constant relentless roller coaster from character to character and their terrible situations that you wonder how the hell they are going to escape from. Also explains why you plough through this book so fast, you honestly cannot put it down! I found myself reading it at work, in the bath, on the toilet (which I NEVER do!), on the treadmill, on the couch and it came out that many times during a pretty poor movie that I cannot even count. I either need better movies or this book was just addictive! I felt like every spare minute my face was in it and part of me is kinda glad it is over, my head is pounding from reading so much!
The characters in this book are amazing. You have some very strong women in this book, they are not only fit and healthy and strong but also so mentally capable, independent and determined. These women are fighters! And so are the guys that happen to get stuck there too. Even with generations between particular characters, they all have such similar strength and it pays off and ensures for some damn fine reading as they give these hillbilly freaks a good run for their money!
Eleanor and her clan are just terrifying. She is huge and grotesque and her family of deformed sons are even worse than anything I have ever read being described. I thought Edward Lee's Creekers did a good job of dealing with abnormalities and deformities, but Kilborn takes it to a whole new level in Endurance. It is like taking something out of your worst nightmares of monsters that only your brain can make up and then having them roam around a town, serving people in an inn and assisting their mother in her disgraceful need for survival. Not only that but the inn itself sounds run down, creepy and there are secret passage ways and doors everywhere so no one is safe, in any room at all. When some characters are taken from bathrooms, others from their closets and the scariest one, with someone UNDER the bed... the book is filled with the atmosphere to keep you on the edge of your seat from the first pace to the last page. Not only is it called Endurance due to the poor characters stuck in the situation but also for the reader to keep at this book, I felt like I was reading it so fast that I myself was going to run out of breath! So the title seemed fitting on both levels.
Another highly recommended book. I was wondering how Kilborn was going to pull it off and keep it going as everything seemed to happen so fast and I was thinking with it all happening so quickly that it ran the risk of getting boring later on. But no, the movie keeps up this nail biting speed all the way through and finishes as abruptly as it begins. Check it out for sure! You won't be disappointed! Now I have to read Trapped, the other of Kilborn's that I picked up. He says that this one is gorier. I cannot even imagine how that is possible. So here goes....
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2016I first read J.A. Konrath’s writing in the gleefully splattery Draculas, a collaboration between four writers about a battle with vampiric creatures in a hospital. Given the collaborative nature of that book, it was hard to know who wrote what, but I got the vibe that Konrath (who writes as Jack Kilborn when he writes horror novels) has a taste for the ghoulish, with a willingness to go to extremes in his violence, and for the pitch black in his humor.
And having read Endurance, it turns out that both of those were true, in spades. The story of a little secluded hotel that lures in its customers for nefarious purposes, Endurance is two parts Psycho, one part Freaks, and about ten parts The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, turning into a blood-soaked, very violent, very horrific nightmare, as our various guests battle for survival against a ghoulish, inbred family who needs their guests’ blood – literally – to stay alive.
Konrath is a straightforward, pulpy author, and Endurance reflects that style, conveying its story and characters with a minimum of storytelling fat and a rapid pace that never really lets up. As a result, it’s a book for horror fans – more than that, even, it’s a book for slasher fans, for those who enjoy their horror with blood and gore to spare. Konrath has a love of the gross-out, it seems, and he fills his book with horrific deformities, maniacal torturers, disgusting villains, and grisly violence to spare.
And make no mistake – this is a rough read, yes, but it’s an undeniably effective one. Konrath’s villains are fascinatingly insane, motivated by an obsession with American Presidents. That’s a wholly unique idea, and one that gives the whole book a wonderfully black comic tone that can be viewed as either really entertaining or really sick, depending on your viewpoint. (By the time characters are trying to make jokes about the forced amputations they’ve undergone at the hands of these villains, you’ll either find yourself shutting the book in horror or laughing at how far Konrath is willing to go.) But it’s also a truly scary book, with Konrath knowing exactly how to work his audience over, savoring our discomfort and unease as we constantly question whether our heroes are being watched in their rooms or being hunted without them knowing. There are a slew of genuinely scary moments here (two of the best involve condensation on a car window and the final pages of a hotel guest log), and given how much horror I read, for me to find something truly scary is no small feat.
All that being said, it’s still pure pulp, and that can be a weakness as well as a strength. The characters ultimately feel pretty flat and generic, and several of their climactic moments are absurdly cheesy and scripted, feeling like staged Chekhov’s guns that don’t even quite fit the story. And while that black comedy can be really fun, the characters’ ability to make jokes about their horrific experiences sometimes feels like they’re healing from this stuff awfully quick – I’m not sure I could crack jokes about the mutilation I had suffered after about half an hour.
But if you can set aside some of that as just being a function of pulp, it’s hard not to have “fun” reading Endurance, if you’re a horror fan. It’s twisted and depraved, without a doubt, and your enjoyment of it will boil down to your willingness to let Konrath push the limits of taste and…well, endurance. There’s gore, there’s mind games, there’s graphic violence, there’s torture, and there’s Rob Zombie-film levels of depravity. And if that’s your thing, you’ll have some ghoulish, twisted fun here. I know I did.

Carina SReviewed in Germany on March 3, 20125.0 out of 5 stars Abartig gut

This is my first foray into the twisted mind of J.A. Konrath, and boy was it fun. Horrific. Just what a horror novel should be.
ruth1044Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 19, 20125.0 out of 5 stars endurance
This is gore fest at its goriest, not for the faint hearted but an absolute delight for anyone who likes the mad and bloody goings on that this author leads you into.A dark and dangerous wood conceals an establishment passing itself off as a hotel, offering free accomodation in terms of money but in everything else the people who take the offer to stay, have to give payment of another kind. There is no plot as such ,the story is mainly who can survive and escape,at times it does seem like they will be overwhelmed and the wrong ones will triumph, but out of all the frantic skirmishes surely there has to be survivors from the large amount of inhabitants of the place, but right up to the end you dont know for sure who it will be. This is an edge of the seat read and anyone who is looking for a truly gruesome read and has a strong stomach this is ideal. This is the first book I have read from this author and have put him at the top of my list and will be looking forward to reading is other publications.
ruggedtoastReviewed in the United Kingdom on February 28, 20134.0 out of 5 stars Texas Chainsaw Massacre
If you like cult American horror like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes and Rob Zombie's Misfits (as well as a slew of other films like Wrong Turn) then you will in all probability, enjoy this book very much.
Kilborn is a considerably accomplished writer, his protagonists have considerable depth without weighing the action down, and the world he creates feels like stepping into a warm bath for a hillbilly horror fan. You've been here before, you know what the rules are and why everything is happening, but you probably haven't read a novel about it before.
The written medium adds a fair bit of scope to the redneck survival horror scenario and Kilborn obviously had a blast putting together grisly scenarios for his hapless characters to wander in to.
The book isnt perfect, it is to my mind, rather too long. He complains in the Afterword that his editors wanted him to cut the length down, which he refused to do and is why the work is an ebook; but they may have had a point. The third act hits the story at the right time but it suffers from repetition with the second and the scenarios start to become a bit predictable although they grow increasingly improbable.
Also the book does feel very filmic, you can see it playing out in your head as a good horror film should, but the opportunity to add depth to the tale by adding the bad guys perspective is entirely missed, and feels rather wanting especially considering the word count. True to the genre there is a good portion of wry humour amid the gore, but it does become a bit corny, and the bathos does remove realism and tension.
This isn't a scary book, but it is a gory, fun page-turner that I read in a couple of days. I highly recommend it.
