Production values = 3 to 5 stars (for a BBC production, it does great).

The sci-fi theme is never distracting and is purely a vehicle for delivering genuinely funny comedy just like Seinfeld apartment and living in New York were barely recognizable. The cast has a contagious interplay like the cast of Seinfeld, Black Adder, Monty Python, etc.

Each character is uniquely and hilariously flawed and each uniquely quirky person's oddities play off those of the others to generate a virtual character like when a quartet of singers hits a perfect harmony and a fifth voice can be heard.

Hyperdrive is nothing like Red Dwarf. I am not anti-Red Dwarf, at times Red Dwarf can generate true comedy. But Red Dwarf's sci-fi is distracting, the writing leaves much to be desired, And the cast of Red Dwarf do not play off each other -- they just incessantly abuse each other.

Do not watch Hyperdrive If you are significantly bothered by low-quality BBC production values e.g. you find Tom Baker's Doctor Who episodes to be too distracting and you can't make it through a whole episode.

But if you find early Monty Python bargain basement productions to be perfectly acceptable, you'll do great with Hyperdrive.

My only criticisms have to do with the lack of promotion for the series when it was broadcast and its premature cancellation.
