... Doomed from the start by ABC. Instead of waiting for the "summer season," ABC ran this against the last two episodes of powerhouse shows on other networks heading into their season finales. DOA, obviously, and ABC pulled the plug immediately. Gee, what a surprise. To add insult to injury, ABC didn't even bother to air the last two episodes of Happy Town on TV, replacing it with reruns of Castle.

Oh, well, nevermind. Against all odds, Happy Town did manage to gain a following. It's all about the mystery of the "Magic Man" who abducted young girls years ago, and now seems to be back. Are the girls dead or alive? And, let's face it, the whole town is quirky. There's a coven of women who meet for tea, all infatuated with the new man at the boarding house (Sam Neill), and one is not allowed to climb the stairs into the attic, and the whole town smells like bread because of the bread factory, but then ... well ... something is discovered in the bread, and the murder you see in the first episode is sort of funny because the guy "needed that like a hole in the head," and I enjoyed every episode.

Did they finally use the song "Magic Man" by Heart in the show? Yes. Do you learn who the "Magic Man" is? Watch and see. My take was wanting more of this excellent show!

This show recalls the line from Hamlet: "It pleased not the millions...t'was caviar for the General."

Many blame ABC for not standing by the show...which is easy to do. But pause for a moment and consider the cost of producing and airing shows in this 21st Century when the Market is wider far than ever it was. Back in the days of my youth when there were only the three big networks (ABC.NBC. & CBS) plus the short-lived DuMont Network and a smattering of independent stations (depending on where you lived you might have between four and seven channels) a network could give a show time to develop a following.

But that is no longer the case...and hasn't been for quite some time (anyone else remember when STAR TREK was cancelled because "no one was watching"? The truth was that a helluva lot of people were watching...,but they weren't part of the "Nielsen Families" (who supposedly represented the viewing habits of the millions. They didn't because no one was paying any attention to what the young people were watching on their OWN sets in their bedrooms so mindless sitcoms and even Westerns still dominated the airwaves and the shows that the millions really WERE watching got axed.) I happen to like mindless sitcoms and Westerns too but that's not the point. A massive letter writing campaign gave STAR TREK an additional season but shows like TIME TUNNELThe Time Tunnel - Volume One, THE GIRL FROM UNCLE The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.: The Complete Series Part One (4 Disc), and so on kept getting axed.

I don't quite know how to review this "product" from amazon. I recorded the first 6 of 8 episodes and was really following this story which had in my opinion great actors and an intriguing story line. Then it was cancelled by ABC. I couldn't believe this was cancelled with all the crap that the studios are keeping. Anyway, I was excited that the final 2 episodes were available from Amazon so I quickly got them to see how the mystery ended. What a bummer. I could have written a dozen or so better endings. The one that was in episode 8 left a lot of questions unanswered. I hate that.

So my review would be 5 for the quality of the video download (for Amazon), 3 for the story (great story but confusing ending) and zero for ABC who produced a serial and then cancelled the plot ending. They did the same for "V". I followed the first dozen or so episodes of that also. Like Happy Town the viewer is left with no ending. I prefer the old paradigm where if a program is cancelled the studio had the courtesy to the viewer to write in an ending to wrap it up.

I thought this was was a really enjoyable mini series to get into. Wish it was more than just one but liked it for what it is was. The family pulled an all-nighter with a bunch on food and had a great time trying to figure it out and wagered who it was.

This show was one of the most frustrating things I've ever watched. They literally (and yes, I dislike the overuse of that word also, but in this case it is appropriate) did not answer one question posed in the series. In fact, all they did was raise more questions that then also went unanswered. No wonder ABC didn't even bother to finish airing the series (learned this thru Wikipedia, afterwards). I guess the writers thought they were being really clever by going entirely against the whole premise of a "whodunnit", being that you actually find out who did it. This is six hours of my life that I'll never get back and I can't believe that I continued to watch it (hopelessly waiting to find out who the "Magic Man" was). The best way to describe how I feel: Like a complete SUCKER.
