I've recently ordered this product twice from this website, once from one of the cheaper sellers, and again from one of Dual's "authorised" distributors (WNH Distribution), which promised to send an upgraded unit. BOTH times I received a unit that is non-compatible with the iPod touch 4th generation (meaning it has to be sent back to the manufacturer for a "firmware 10/10" upgrade). If you order from a non-authorised distributor and need the upgrade, Dual will charge you $60 +shipping (to IL and back) for the upgrade, which takes 1-2 weeks. If you order from an authorised distributer, you'll still have to fork out the shipping costs.

So take note that there are two different products on this website - if you have an iPod touch 4th generation, you're effectively entering a lottery to see which version gets sent to you!

I could not resist the idea of using my Ipod touch as a GPS for both the car and the trail but almost a year latter, after many frustrating attempts to get this to work, I finally realise it's a bad idea.

The main problem is that sattelite connection is very slow and spotty: it takes anywhere from 5 minutes to half an hour to lock on. Recently it stopped working all together when I was on my way to an important meeting. Of course I can't return it and I would not bother getting it repaired or replaced because of the poor sattelite connection and other reasons stated below.

The other big problem is that the aps that you need to use this device are difficult to use and not very effective. "Motion GPX" was the best one but I had to figure out how to make it stop making annoying noises on the trail (turning off the ipod volume did not work) You also have to download individual maps for your area which can be slow and also hard to figure out if your area is covered. The only auto navigation ap that worked is GOGO navigator which cost over $30. I was able to get decent turn by turn navigation with this ap (When I was able to connect with a sattelite which was sometimes not at all) but the map viewing is terrible: most of the streets apear without lables and zooming is choppy and innacurate (you end up looking at the entire eastern seaboard or a 20 yard stretch of unlabed street). With an Ipod touch, you are not connected to the internet when traveling so you need to have an ap that has the map date built in (unlike google maps which only stores small amounts of map data and relies on downoaling). Many of the navigation aps are designed to work with an Iphone which does have a constant internet connection and can dowload map data as needed.

Amazon,
What is the matter with you? A NEW version of this device XGPS251 with the 10/10 firmware exists. The old version of this device does NOT work with an iPOD TOUCH 4th generation device. Now I have to send this XGPS251 into the maufacture and get a replacement unit sent, which is going to take an additional 14 days and an extra $19.95 to complete the order. Why do I have to send it in to the manufacture? Because the manufacture of this product does NOT allow the owner to upgrade the firmware. Why did you send out an older unit? Why?

I have not had this kind of experience with you before. Why would you send out a product that is OUTDATED? You have made me rethink doing any future business with you.

I originally purchased a DualAV GPSX251 in August 2011 and the Navigon USA App. I am happy with Navigon, but a few months after using the GPS, it would no longer charge my 3d generation iPod when plugged into my car in GPS mode. So I sent it back for a replacement. The replacement worked well for a few months and then I started having difficulty getting an initial position. If I fiddled with the switch I could get it to connect. Then it quit. I sent it in under warranty for the second time and got my new unit around Feb 15. It worked great for two days. Then started taking forever to initialize again. Today, Feb 21, I can't get it to work at all. I'm following the directions. The location services icon just blinks on and off every 10 seconds and never seems to connect. The Dual test app can't connect either.

I was wanting to use Navigon NZ next week when I go to New Zealand, but I guess I'm out of luck. I think I just have a large battery brick now. I wish it worked.

I'd buy a different GPS receiver if I were you.

I purchased this a year ago and have used it for three main purposes: hunting/scouting, hiking and biking. I purchased the MotionX GPS software for $3 - it meets those needs. I don't need to do a lot of navigating, so I didn't get the turn-by-turn app. The free, downloadable maps are great. I live in a rural area so if I am going to a new place and plan ahead, I can get there with just the GPS app (no need for turn-by-turn directions). I also downloaded the Topo Maps app to download and use USGS maps. Between the two I can typically plot suitable hunting or hiking routes based on USFS and logging roads.

I have used this with good success after a learning curve.

1) I can't just throw this in my saddle pack, backpack or bird bag without some forethought. It must be pointing up and be unobstructed to get good, constant communication from a satellite. They warn you of this in the instructions, so just be aware that they aren't being overly conservative.

2) The power switch on the back can be switched off while bouncing in a pack or while taking it in and out of a pocket. I take some painter's tape and tape over it when carrying it in a pack. This is the design flaw. If the switch was recessed or had a cover that slid over it, that would solve the problem.

3) Be sure to put the iPod in sleep mode while recording a track to save power. It won't automatically go into sleep mode unless you do this.

4) Every once in a while I get a message "device not supported by iPod" or I simply can't get a signal. I just disconnect them, reboot the iPod, reconnect and all is well. Be aware that it can take up to a minute or two to get a signal depending on clarity of the satellite signal.
