Somewhat entertaining, but hardly Chandleresque despite the title.

As a die hard noir fan I had seen the authors name mentioned in a number of essays so I decided to order this one and see what all the rumpus was about. Well, Chandler has nothing to fear here except for the pun of the title. Our protagonist, a private detective suffers from narcolepsy and tends to hallucinate and go on the nod at the worst of times. I did find the information about the malady fascinating however and yes, it is a gimmick no doubt, but just like we have encountered countless gumshoes that were alcoholics, etc in the past, so it is this affliction that Tremblay's hero must contend. I liked that it was set in North Boston however and that made it a bit more interesting. Tremblay's writing style depends a tad too much on wordplay and puns run wild, but hopefully he can develop more of an in depth character such as Jonathan Lethem did in Motherless Brooklyn. Not terrible, merely a quick read.

I began with Mr. Tremblay's horror/mystery, and tried this due to good reviews and curiosity.

It takes some getting used to. The main character is so far from the typical charming hero that it is admirable. One often has the feeling that a writer is writing some version of himself, which he would like to play in a movie, so he could get a fan club of gushing gals.

Not so here. Tremblay has bravely designed a character who is not going to do that. And yet, we keep reading and reading and reading, because the obstacles pile up and we want to solve the mystery. He does not create an anti-hero, either. We don't dislike the protagonist. It is an interesting game and a fine line he is writing.

Excellent writing. Fun. Classical noir feeling with many twists!

A narcoleptic detective could easily be a recipe for comedy and light-hearted discrimination but the author spins a dark story that revels in awkward moments and doubt. I got lost a few times in the story but realized that this must be the narcoleptic view of things, diving in and out the time line never knowing where I would wake up. Don't be afraid to be getting lost for a few pages, the author will guide you back to the story and will tie the lose ends back together in the end. Very satisfying. I am not analyzing why but I had two moments when I felt like reading Confederacy of Dunces while falling asleep.

I found this book to be incredibly frustrating. While the writing is good and the concept is interesting, there is no way to suspend your disbelief long enough to believe this private detective is any way way qualified, capable or even willing to do his "job" much less tie his shoelaces. He constantly falls asleep but even when he is awake, he stumbles around, makes incredibly poor decisions, risks the interests of clients he doesn't remember meeting, breaches confidentiality in dangerous ways, puts the lives of others at risk and honestly seems to have absolutely no idea what he is doing. This would make a better Saturday Night Live skit. That being said, I did enjoy his humor and sarcasm (the clown pants crack me up) but I was never invested in the character. He was so self-destructive and careless with himself and everyone around him it was hard to care what happened.
