I'm upgrading this review to 5/5 stars, because this headset it still alive and kicking after 6 years. It still works great, and I use it regularly when taking calls in my home. The headset has outlasted every one of my smartphones. It still holds a charge pretty well and still sounds great. If it ever breaks, I would probably buy another one.
[2017 Update #2]
Well, it finally "died." But only because I accidentally put it through the wash and dryer. It still technically works and pairs with my phone, but the earpiece is physically broken off and no sound comes out. RIP PS3 Headset.
[Original Review]
I purchased this mainly for use with my T-Mobile HTC G2 Android phone. I have a PS3, but I don't play online often, so it's mainly for phone calls.
Pros:
It connects quickly and flawlessly to my phone, and the sound quality is absolutely amazing in the earpiece. As good, if not better, than the sound I get from my handset. The earpiece is comfortable and light, and I often forget that I'm even wearing it.
The earpiece comes with a USB cable that allows instant pairing (and charging) with your PS3. No more fussing with it to disconnect it from your phone and force it to connect to the PS3. It just does it, no problem. There's also a cradle charger for it, but I haven't had much use for that yet.
Battery life is great so far. I accidentally left it on in my car overnight, and it was still blinking the next morning.
Cons:
The major drawback of this headset is that people on the other end of the phone have a hard time hearing and understanding me. Unless I'm in a perfectly quiet and enclosed area, I often have to speak loudly and repeat myself. They say I sound much more tinny than usual. I asked my wife to call me while using it so I could hear what they were hearing, but I didn't really notice any major issues.
I'm also not too thrilled with the button configuration, although I guess that's because it's primarily a gaming headset. The large main button on the side of the headset mutes the mic instead of accepting/ending calls. This makes sense when you're gaming, but when I first started using it with my phone, it was counter-intuitive. The phone button is smaller and on top, near the volume buttons. It didn't take too long to adjust to this change.
Summary:
I'd say this is probably the best Bluetooth headset you can get right now for the money. The cons I listed don't bother me too much, but I figured I should let possible customers know about them. I'm happy with the purchase so far.
There are a few things I dislike about this mic. Namely the range of the mic, with my old generic $15 mic I could go to the kitchen or even outside to my vehicle without losing out on the conversation. The Playstation mic I can only get about half the distance and I get disconnected. In order to reconnect I have to restart the mic when back in range. I don't like the fact that when I connect the mic to the charge cradle I have to power it back on in order to talk.
In all it could be better. I could have spent less money buying another generic mic just like the one I had or more super glue. I wanted a backup mic and planned on using my super glued generic mic for that purpose but the Playstation mic I believe is going to be the backup mic. I could have used the PS Eyecam as a backup mic for when my generic mic died as I did before but it picks ups the sound from my TV easier than the Playstation mic. My PS3 sits right under my TV and I sit about 6 feet from the TV when I play. So the Playstation mic does not pick up the TV to have the echoing like the Eyecam does.
One last thing that is minor. The charge cable that comes with the Playstation mic is really short. About 8 inches long, so my PS3 sitting under my TV that is about 6 feet away means the mic is far away. So What I sometimes will do is have an aftermarket charge cable I bought for the controller sitting right next to me I will use it for the mic instead.
Overall I would say it would be better for a lot of people to get a cheap generic bluetooth mic. My generic mic is an LG HBM-760. Great inexpensive mic that has/is serving me well for years. Even needing to super glue the ear piece back to the main body after kids stepping on it after the cats knocked it on the floor.... A few times. The Playstation forums has a list of compatible mics that will work on the PS3, not all bluetooths will work.
