Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1989 debut album from Trent Reznor and Co. featuring one bonus track: 'Get Down Make Love'. Rob Sheridan, NIN's longtime art director, has also re-imagined the packaging of Pretty Hate Machine under Reznor's supervision. The Bicycle Music Company acquired the rights to Pretty Hate Machine from a division of Prudential Securities in the spring of 2010. It was Bicycle's intention from the onset to enable Reznor to regain some control of the lost piece of NIN's legacy, resulting in this artist approved 2010 reissue of one of music's most groundbreaking and influential albums.

Good audio representation but a little lacking on bass response.

Having recently purchased a high end turntable I have been shopping for old favorites on vinyl and came across this one for $9.89 and figured I'd give it a go. I own an original 1990 CD release of this album and have listened to it hundreds of times to the point that I feel I know this one like the back of my hand. Listening to this vinyl release (3 gram stylus setting) I can say that the audio representation is pretty good but it does lack on the low end, it seems that the bass response was purposely attenuated and even compared to some original 70's vinyl in my collection this one can't even come close on bass response. There were some passages that I was expecting the music to hit pretty hard on the bass line but it never did like I came to expect from my original CD release, I had to emphasize the bass quite a bit to make up for the difference but all in all the album was enjoyable and doesn't suffer from the loudness war like some other "Remastered releases" do. Vinyl was clean and free of any visible abnormalities and end to end both sides were free from groove noise and skipping as reported from others.

Bought this LP pressing because it's the original mastering

The album is classic. I've been a NIN fan since 1990, so this review isn't about the music as everything NIN/Trent does is pure genius and amazing. This is just about this particular vinyl pressing. I wanted the original mastering of PHM on vinyl, and not the remastered version, simply because I didn't like that Trent removed samples from "Sanctified". Also, the three-sided double-vinyl of the remaster has side one ending on "Sanctified" meaning that awesome bleeding drone into "Something I Can Never Have" is something... um... you can never have with the remaster on vinyl. So, I picked this one. And apparently I got lucky as the disc is not warped or defective (as some reviewers have stated) and plays back perfectly. It was a risk I was willing to take in ordering this pressing just to get the original mastering. So, worked out for me. Love this album. As good today as it was when I got it on cassette in 1990 (if not better given its contrast to the state of modern music).

Great music, terrible vinyl pressing

The one star only pertains to the quality of the vinyl pressing, not the music itself.

I went through two orders of this album and returned the both of them. They skipped on first pressing and both discs were warped. I do not recommend purchasing this vinyl and would highly recommend waiting for a re-issue from a legitimate company with experience in re-issues.

I already own this album (it's currently in my car's CD player) but I bought the MP3 today so I can listen to it at work. "Pretty Hate Machine" is one of the dew albums I can think off of the top of my head that I can listen to over and over and over without skipping a single track. Usually with albums, there's at least one track on it that I either don't like or am irritated by ... not this one as I love every single track on it. Brilliant album.

Pretty Hate Machine was always an excellent record. So much of what Nine Inch Nails would become is evident in this album. This album features a more synth-heavy sound than the follow-up albums Broken and The Downward Spiral had. Lyrically, it's an exquisite album that later NIN albums just never seemed to match. For proof, one just needs to listen to "Something I Can Never Have"...easily one of the most moving and haunting NIN songs ever written. The album also includes the classic singles, "Head Like a Hole", "Down In It" and "Sin".

The biggest problem that Pretty Hate Machine had was that the sound quality was fairly awful. The album seemed to be mixed in a lower volume than most other CD's and was plagued by an overly tinny sound throughout. Well, it's 2010 now, and Trent Reznor has finally had the opportunity to give this classic album a proper remastering. The result is everything you'd expect from Reznor's perfectionism and more. This album sounds phenomenal! The bass is deep, the highs are clear, and the vocals have been brought out to a more even level. In true NIN fashion, by listening to the album through headphones (or even just at a high volume on your stereo) you will notice so many little nuances you never did before. It's a fantastic listening experience!

As a little bonus, Reznor included an extra track. It is a cover of Queen's "Get Down, Make Love" which originally appeared as a B-side to the single for "Sin". It's a fairly decent cover, though I personally find it sounds very much out of place on Pretty Hate Machine. Still, I can't complain about its inclusion and it doesn't detract from the album at all.

Finally, long-time NIN art collaborator Rob Sheridan has redone the album artwork and packaging to look more modern. The result is a snazzy outer plastic sleeve with the main artwork on a digipak case. It looks just as fantastic as the album sounds.

Overall, if you're a NIN fan this is a no-brainer of a purchase. Yes, it's still 1989 NIN, but it's also one of the best alternative albums ever!
