Product Description

The Steadicam Smoothee is specifically designed and engineered to work with your Apple Ipod Touch. Based on the same technology as the big $60,000 rigs used in Hollywood, it allows iPod Touch owners to capture incredible video without the shakes normally associated with hand-held video shot on the go, right out of the box, the very first time. The Steadicam Smoothee is small and agile enough to take on vacations or follow the action at sporting events. The Smoothee let's you "fly" wherever the scene takes you--up and down steps, indoors and outside, through crowds--almost anywhere, with precise, elegant control and ease. Its quick release mount lets you instantly swap camera connections between your Smoothee and any tripod. While designed for the Apple iPod Touch, the patented quick release removable mount also serves as a tabletop stand or can be mounted to any tripod with a standard ¼ x20" camera mount. The comfortable ergonomic hand-grip folds up securely when not in use. Also included with the Steadicam Smoothee is a quick guide DVD on how to get the best possible shots, along with a carrying strap. The lightweight, compact, agile, and easy to use Steadicam Smoothee features an innovative, patented design built around a durable mono-frame metal structure that requires no complicated instruction to use. With its "go anywhere" compact dimensions, the Steadicam Smoothee is approximately 8"W x 14.5" H x 2.5" D (20.3 x 36.8 x 6.4cm) in operating configuration.

I've had this device for about 30 days now, and it does take some getting used to. The learning curve is not that far off for its intended user and that is a novelist. The setup was done within about 15 min. and I had steady video within about an hour or so. My only catch with this device is the price tag I understand it's under $200 and with the next step up in steady cam being the Merlin at $800 I think there needs to be a mid-point device between this and the Merlin. As an avid videographer with home movies and covering local youth football I use my iPhone a lot but I use a Canon H20 a lot more due to higher-quality video and this device has been designed to only be balanced with which ever device it is purchased for be it the iPhone 4 for iPhone 3GS or any of the cameras that they make adapters for. This adapter will mount to a standard tripod but you will not be able to mount anything but the holder that came with or was purchased from steady cam. I think it would be better if they came out with a device that would attach to this that would support a very light consumer camcorder. In my opinion the Merlin can hold a lot more weight at a much higher price tag than what the average consumer needs. I think this would be a much better investment if you had an adapter that would allow you to put your lightweight consumer grade camcorder onto the steady cam smoothee. This would give the overall value of the device a much greater appeal. I know the consumer I'm not at a point in which I am willing to pay $800 to steady a $400 camera But I'm also not using a $2200 camera I think the Merlin serves its purpose at its price point but I think this movie just needs to do a little bit more and it would be well worth the money.

Let me say this first. YES IT'S WORTH IT!

I am an amateur videographer and I needed something like this for a couple paid projects. It took me a while to get used to how it handled, but this thing is awesome once you get used to using it. Steadicam is pretty much THE name in camera stabilization, so I felt pretty confident buying this. I was not let down at all.

It WILL take practice to use this thing correctly. Expect that. I probably put in an hour or two of practice before getting anything really decent. I'm not the most coordinated so you'll probably get it quicker than I did. You can also get somewhat decent stuff within 30 minutes of fiddling, but to get really good stuff you just have to practice, practice, practice.

To be fair, this is not a great thing to use in the wind, but what do you expect when it's handheld? The amount of weight it would take to stabilize an iPhone in the wind would not be fun to hold for any amount of time. This device is ideal for filming inside, or any environment without wind. I haven't used it with the go-pro, so I don't know what that's like, but the size of the iPhone makes it pretty vulnerable to wind.

The balance adjustments are a bit tricky, mine seem to have a little play in them. It't not a big deal, it just might throw you off at first. I also haven't found any need to move the front weight on the arms for better balancing. I also use an olloclip for filming sometimes and that affects the balance obviously. Its a bit annoying having to readjust when I want to use it, but that's not the product's fault.

The construction of the unit seems pretty solid, the handle seems very light but it's hard to complain about that since nobody wants to handhold a heavy stabilizer.

The price point of this thing is really great. I know that folks always want something for nothing, but if that's your attitude then make your own DIY rig and don't complain when it's not perfect. This is made by one of the industry leaders in stabilization, it's not a cheap piece of junk. It's a great tool. It's not perfect, but for what you are getting, the price is perfectly reasonable. It irritates me that folks complain about what this costs. If you want quality, you're not going to get it for nothing.

This is a great tool for just about anyone, amateurs can use this as their primary setup and be perfectly happy with it I think (though I do recommend a means of charging your iPhone and an Olloclip). Pros can use this as a backup and still get great quality. It's a great tool all the way around.

These are my initial impressions, I have only had the smoothie a couple days now. I will post updates.

I have read a lot of reviews from many different websites with the word "Flip cam". Thinking that if it could work with the flip cam why not the zi8? Well, the iphone attachment comes off and other attachments can be put on, like the flip attachment, sold separately. The way it comes off is similar to a tripod. A tripod like mine (Sunpack Plat + 5800D) has a top piece that un-latches and has the screw on the top to screw your camera into it. These tops seem to be universal but I am not sure. Anyway, I thought I could take the top from the tripod and put it into the top on the Smoothie. No. The opening is too small. Did they do this on purpose so that you only purchase their attachments? Why couldn't they design the smoothie with a piece that just has the (Universal) screw on top so that you can use any small camera? Stupid. I ended up taking the top from the tripod and shaving the sides down with an exacto knife until it fit into the smoothie. that piece also has a level on it to help with the balancing. (Something that should probably be on the smoothie to begin with!)

Balancing is a little difficult, and getting used to this thing is indeed challenging. But with time I know it will pay off.

Walking in a straight line is easy and you will see improvements 100%. Without it you can "See" me walking. Every step and the camera would shake with my movements. With the smoothie it seems as though you are gliding. It looks a little unnatural at first when watching the video. But keep in mind this is walking in a straight line. It gets tricky when you want to zoom because you really don't want to be touching any part of the camera or smoothie. Panning from left to right and looking up and down is tricky too. If you just hold the handle your shot will be the smoothest. But the camera tends to wander and most of the time you need to control the camera to look at things, so you need to touch the smoothie to control it. This is the tricky part that will come with practice.

I like to hold it in one hand with my thumb and index finger lightly holding the collar. Hold too loosely and the camera is a wild mustang, hold too tightly and you defeat the purpose of the smoothie.

4 stars because it is a quality piece and It's MUCH cheaper than the Merlin!
-1 star because I hate when companies make their products and accessories "Exclusive". Like I said before, unless you have an iphone or flip cam, this won't work for you unless you are willing to rig something yourself. But you really can't do anything too wild because you will throw off the balancing and the whole unit won't work. i.e. I initially though I could attach the Zi8 to the iphone mount with velcro/rubberbands. Who would pay this much for the mediocre videos the iphone records anyway? They should have included a thread at the top. Most camera's have this for mounting on "UNIVERSAL" equipment!
