Colour From the Dark

2010

NR CC
2.5 out of 5 stars (4) IMDb 4.7/10

From the imagination of H.P. Lovecraft, and the visionary horror director Ivan Zuccon comes a new tale of cinematic terror... It's the 1940's, and World War II is raging. Pietro and Lucia live on an isolated farm with Alice, Lucia's younger sister. Alice is a 23 year old who suffers from severe mental problems. They live their simple lives tilling the soil as poor farmers. Pietro is a good worker and a strong man, who unlike his three brothers, is not at war because of a deformed knee. Lucia is a beautiful and reserved woman dedicated to her family. Their life is peaceful and good, in spite of the hard work and isolation. One day, while drawing water from the well, Pietro and Alice stir something at the bottom, at first an apparently insignificant event, which frees something from Earth' womb. A strange and alien color flashes underwater, at the well's bottom, then disappears. From that moment on, inexplicable events start happening all around the farm, and by night, the surrounding vegetation glitters with a sinister glow. The color soon takes a hold of the entire farm, and seeps inside Pietro and his family's minds, drawing them into its sick world of pain, blood and death...

I met Debbie Rochon at a convention last year, and while we were talking about various features, she suggested this movie to me. I bought it on the download-to-own format, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Let me say a couple of things before I really get into the review, though. I have a degree in film, and I'm not the biggest fan of Hollywood created movies. I like something with a bit of thought, and production value that doesn't come exclusively from the bank. I am also a huge fan of H. P. Lovecraft.
That said, I would highly suggest this movie as it's a very atmospheric rendition of "The Colour Out of Space". The selling point of the film (beyond Ms. Rochon) is the outstanding look of the movie. In film school we would call this mise-en-scene, a nearly indescribable term that is essentially the overall tone and look of a movie that manipulates the audience in a non-narrative way towards a particular set of emotions, which is barely a description of "film's grand undefined term". Whatever. BUT...COLOUR FROM THE DARK has mise-en-scene out the wazoo. It is sumptuously made, scored, and edited. It has scenes and sequences which have a simple "unsettlingness" to them without falling (too often) into the cliche of the average horror film. It's obvious that the director has a great love for the works of Lovecraft. Earlier in his career he made a wonderful attempt to bring Lovecrafts Music of Erich Zann, Dreams in the Witch House, and The Shunned House to film in his movie THE SHUNNED HOUSE.
The only issue I have with COLOUR FROM THE DARK is a lack of explanation of the mysterious force unearthed in the well, and the last minute introduction of the brother-in-law as a character. There are a couple of scenes that gave me a slight sense of "huh?

There are too few movies based on H.P. Lovecraft and most of them are low budget. While this is no exception (lower budget), it is very well done and evocotive of the Lovecraft ethos.

If you want a good movie based on "The Colour Out Of Space" by H.P. Lovecraft, look no further than "Die Farbe" - that is a masterful film which is fairly true to the original story and remains true to Lovecraft's Mythos throughout. This is a wretched little film. It is void of Lovecraft's mythos.

Baffling, incompetent, slow, terrible acting, just no. If you like Lovecraft, watch Dagon instead.
