Just like movie 2001, this movie will stand the test of time.

I watched this film in theaters back in 2001.

I loved the film back then, but I love it even more now.

Just like Kubrick's great movie 2001, I also think this movie will stand the test of time and might be ranked as one of the greatest science fictions ever filmed.

There are two important things about this movie I had missed when I had watched it in theaters.

First is what made David (the AI) unique was his desire to fulfill his purpose, which was to both love and be loved by his "mother". For his purpose, David is willing to do anything and his intense desire to fulfill his purpose is what sets him apart from all previous robots.

Second, the musical score in this film is simply breathtaking. I mean it is one of the best of all time great.

Number of people have mistakenly concluded the ending involved aliens. But they are not aliens but a future advanced artificial intelligence humanoid.

Just like humans seek their purpose by seeking their creator, so too the AI seek their own purpose by seeking their creator, which is us.

17 years after the release of this film, the advent of AI has become real. We will almost certainly have AI in the next ten years and we may even have our first "David" with real emotions, within couple of decades. Because AI do not have end-of-life and does not depend on organism to support itself, any AI we build may not only be self-sustaining but very long-lasting, and probably will outlast the human race. Unlike humans, AI humanoids are not bound by time or the frailties of the flesh. They can absorb and compute information exponentially better than any human. For those reasons alone, they will achieve things that us humans can only dream of, such as infinite wisdom, technology, and interstellar travel.

A mind twister that stood the test of time...

This movie came out when I was still a kid but it's still relevant today. I think the movie makes more sense now than it did when it was released.. as of now, we are at the beginning stages of AI and the advancements are increasing rapidly. In fact, many of us use AI daily (Google Assistant, Siri, Amazon Alexa). Steven Spielberg never disappoints, he always knows how to make a film a wonderous classic with his creative stories. I do admit the ending was unexpected and weird, but as a science fiction, (though, AI is no longer science fiction today) it's always mysterious and leaves people thinking and asking questions. Movies involving robots usually can be sad because it reminds us that we are humans and we don't live forever but what we contribute in this life does. David (the main character) shows how far he will go to love and be loved, a human quality that normally could not be duplicated by a machine. The CGI was actually very good for it's time.. watching this film in 2001 you were probably mind blown by how real it looked. Overall, this movie is worth watching if you're a fan of science fiction and enjoy films by Spielberg.. a bit long, can be a little weird (science fiction), and does have some thought provoking sad aspects to it (humans, life, love, robots).. so brace yourself for an adventure that takes place in the future (which is coming very soon).

If you're curious how advanced we are in AI technology, look up "Sophia the AI robot" on YouTube.. amazing and scary at the same time!

Amazing film that still holds it's own after all these years.

Seeing the Twin Towers locked in ice with the Manhattan skyline 2000 years into the future was a haunting vision of what will never be.

My eyes still grow damp at the end when Monica and David have their one perfect day together and she falls forever asleep.

Jude Law is excellent as Gigolo Joe.

If you liked him in GATTICA you will like this film.

Beautiful yet bleak; dazzling yet dark: a great creative achievement.

This is a dark, brilliant and in many ways beautiful film. I found it frankly very frightening and horrifying a lot of the time, and the ending left me deeply sad and deeply anxious. Some might call this a horror movie. It's beautifully made, beautifully photographed, beautifully directed, acted, etc. But I can't recommend this with my whole heart to anyone and everyone. And I would be very cautious about ever exposing a child to this film. This is a true work of art that many will not find at all entertaining. And some, like me, will find nightmarish. It reminded me of "Blade Runner," but I found "Blade Runner" a much more affirmative film. This presents a bleak vision of the future, but a profound vision of human nature, exploring the great human need for and the capacity to love. It struck me as far too stark and uncompromising to ever be sentimental. Whatever my reservations about the violent, horrifying elements,and the terrifying overview of this film, I certainly see this as a magnificent creative achievement.

This is absolutely my favorite movie of all time. I have it on DVD but why stress the DVD when Amazon is showing it for free? One of the handful of movies I watch every few years. If this movie doesn't touch you, then YOU must be a robot. Seriously, I can't imagine anyone not being moved by this story. Superb story, excellent acting, fantastic directing.. what more do you want? Timeless too. Still looks like a new movie just released theaters to DVD. I think it's even more relevant today with AI in the news so much lately and the progress with robots. I do believe we aren't that far away from this story becoming a reality. Maybe in our lifetimes.
