I bought this for basic around the house things as well as basic constructing of furniture items. For $30, this is a real good deal. It is pretty powerful (in hardwoods it tended to strip the screws if you go to fast). I used it to hang a bunch of pictures, and make a several things around the house (saw stand, shelves, fence gate, etc.). I was tired of buying new batteries every year and a half for the same price as a new drill and this was a good solution. I am not a contractor so having an outlet to plug in is not a problem.

I bought this drill because I really needed a new drill and quickly. I shopped around a bit and decided on a corded drill because I couldn't afford to shell out the sort of money it would take to get a cordless drill that would meet my approval (powerful enough and with a long lasting battery). Decent cordless drills start at 100 bucks. I decided to go with a corded drill because, as I said, I wanted to spend less money, and I generally use my drill where I have access to power anyhow so it seemed like a good idea. I think this drill is a good value for the money, it's fairly powerful, it seems to be built well (and tough).

It it's comparable to many other drills I've ever used with a keyless chuck. But, that being said, the one thing I don't like about it is its chuck. I don't think I've ever found a keyless chuck that I was truly satisfied with. If the bit binds up in whatever it is you're drilling (in this case I was using a really cheap bit, it wasn't from lack of power in the drill) there's a chance it'll slip (not every time, but it happened more than I would have liked).

Even with my complaint about the chuck, it's still not a bad drill. I'm happy I bought it and I think it was a good value for the money. I'd probably buy it again, or look for a similar one with a keyed chuck. At double the price for a DeWalt, I'd rather have this drill plus the 30 dollar difference and have a bit slip on occasion. I rated this drill 4 stars mainly because it's a good value for the money. If it cost $60 this would be a 3 star review.

I bought this drill as a gift for my son. He has used it several times and said it is an Excellent Drill!!! It has good power, good trigger control, good torque, easy to use chuck, and not too heavy. It works just as well as a screwdriver as it does a drill. This is a drill that I highly recommend.

If you want some quality Screw Driver, please do not buy this one. It is very difficult to control speed and it is kinda bulky to handle.

**Update Below**

When the drill first came in, I needed to drill three hole into particle board desks. I bought the Black & Decker 71-120 Hole Saw Assortment to use with this drill. I have used hole saws before and i know they need decent power to do their thing. This is a cheap drill and those are cheap hole saws but we are talking about particle board here not hardwood. The drill was very hot after each hole was cut, there seemed to be a lot of airflow coming from the drill and the amount of heat was surprising. I used the Drill again to put some pilot holes in a door and it seemed fine. Today i had to drill another hole into a particle board table and the motor vents pushed a bunch of white smoke and the drill was very hot. I know how to use a drill and even though the bits are not good quality i wasn't pushing the drill very hard... Amazon won't let me return it because its past 30 days, I'm going to look into returning to black and decker but it might end up costing more than the drill...

Update: 10/2/2014

I submitted a very similar review to the one above on black and deckers website. it was never posted on their website so i assume they filter their reviews and remove the negatives. I've also submitted a case to their support team and im waiting for a response. I will update this review when\if they get back to me with more then an automated message

Ive lost a ton of confidence in the black and decker brand and will most likely never use one of their products again.

Update number 2

Black & Decker Customer Care sent me a very generic response asking that i take the "saw" to a service center. This was a auto generated email that used my zip code to find the closest service center and then auto filled my name some text telling me they were sorry my saw was not working then signed the correspondence under the name Kim.

they get a C- for effort at best... ive since purchased a used ryobi 18v combo cordless kit and im very happy with it

Worked OK for some six months, although I was annoyed that the reverse switch kept getting accidentally activated just by gripping the drill in a normal sort of way. I use it as an amateur, just for drilling, but maybe rather more often than most amateurs as I've done a lot of hobby woodwork lately.

Then, today, I felt the chuck felt a little rough. Kept on using it for a while but suddenly the chuck let go of the 3/8th inch bit it was driving. Lifted the drill up and the bit stayed in the hole. Remarkably, there was a black screw balanced on top of the bit and it stayed there until I touched it. The screw looked as if it originated in the base of the chuck, but although I had a matching torx (?) bit, I could not screw it back in.

So, I now discover that although this is still listed as current by Amazon, there's no sign of it on the B&D website, their search engine cannot find it. Also, B&D service centers are all far away, so even if I get my drill back reasonable quickly, it's going to cost me about half the cost of the drill to send it in for repair. And no drill in the meantime.

Got a lot of unfinished projects and I'm not a happy camper. I wish I'd followed my instincts and bought something a little better in the first place.

UPDATE

Well, it's just under two weeks since I sent the drill off, and today's UPS brought what appears to be a brand new replacement, in new box with all original extras.

So, I can't fault the service, except for the $12 it cost me to ship it back. Now to hope this chuck stays together. Thanks, Black and Decker.
