    Customers say

Customers like the performance, size and noise of the personal computer. For example, they mention it's a good small server, perfect for a firewall or small fileserver, takes up little space and serves small data traffic. Some appreciate the power supply noise is quiet enough to place in a small office. That said, they say it'll provide plenty of horsepower with its D525 processor.

Update: I like these machines a lot, and have installed 30+ of them here at SomaFM now. They are very reliable and the IPMI is great. I wish it had an additional fan to the one in the power supply, and I wish the 2.5" mounting options were better (see below). The D525 processor provides plenty of horsepower. We run both Windows XP (for some specialized radio broadcast software) and linux on these boxes.

While they are not perfect they really deserve 4.75 stars :) There isn't anything that compares to this at the price point.

    Original Review:

This is good performing, low power consumption box. It is mostly fanless (there is a small fan in the PS), depending on what you're doing with it you may want to install a small fan in it. In one of them, I used a PCI "slot" fan which is OK, but uses up your one slot.

Unlike older SuperMicro Atom-based servers, this one does include a PCIe riser card.

Issues: There is no way to properly install a 2.5" drive without drilling your own holes (Update: or buying an optional bracket). If you're lazy, you can install a 2.5" drive with a single screw and it will mostly stay in place. But this is a strange omission, and why I give it 4 stars. There is room to fit 2 2.5" drives in the case without any special brackets if they'd only put in those screw holes. There are brackets available that let you put 2 2.5" drives i the space of a 3.5" one, and I've

[UPDATE: this turned out to be a bad batch of PCIe cards, so the server was not to blame!-->>I've also had problems getting a PCIe audio DSP card to be recognized. Not sure if the card has issues, or the slot is giving me problems.]

I installed Endian Firewall on this little guy and it's working great! This is perfect for a firewall or small fileserver. It's pretty quiet with only the power supply fan running so heat could be an issue for some. Mine is installed in a server room so it's not a factor for me. Totally recommend this one!

Ubuntu Svr can't find any NIC's so Its useless. Windows Svr runs okay on it, but I doesn't expect much. Now it sits as a stand to hold my soldering gun. Garbase.

For a home server, the power supply fan is way too loud even at the lowest bios setting. Expect a steady whine.

I also had a lot of trouble getting the right memory. When picking memory, it seems to want to use the kind with 16 chips, 8 on a side. The 4 on a side SODIMM that I tried was not recognized by the bios. This memory worked, sort of:
    B00505EZYW

When shopping I was wondering how many 2.5" drives would fit inside. The answer is- a lot, if you are willing to mount them with double-stickies and use a few power supply dividers. I personally only used two drives, but I thought it would be useful for a buyer to know that there's a lot of room in there, and ports for six drives, power for three with an adapter and six with a power splitter (if you're using low-current SSDs)

I got some kernel oops but I don't know if that was heat or the memory. I suspect heat, given the uneven cooling path inside. Overall not a workable solution for my needs, but with a few extra fans it could make a useful appliance.

I purchased one of these machines to be utilized as a UTM solution for a customer. The unit performs very well even under peak hours of the day. The 4GB limit does limit this machine to an extend, but honestly if you need any more RAM than 4GB you should probably consider purchasing a more robust piece of hardware.

My only other disappointment with this unit is the lack of fans. No fans are included in this unit, to include (or not) a fan for the CPU heatsink. I had to purchase a separate fan and modify the heatsink slightly so that the fan would fit within the unit while ensuring proper air flow. Without the fans installed, the CPU temp was about 65 degrees Celcius under load. No with the fans installed and better thermal paste, the unit runs nice and cool at 38-44 degrees Celcius.

All things considered, I would still, and probably will, purchase more of these units in the future.

Amazon incorrectly lists the memory as 2x 200pin DDR3-800/667 SODIMM. The correct memory is 204-pin SO-DIMM DDR-3 800/667. I bought 1066 memory, but it works fine at 800.

If you intend to install a full height, half length PCI card, you will not be able to fit a 3.5" drive. I had to go with a 2.5" laptop drive, then separately purchase the single drive HDD tray MCP-220-00051-0N to allow this to be mounted using the holes on the bottom of the chassis.

I'm running CentOS 6.5 and so far I'm impressed. This machine won't set any speed records, but if you have the need for a basic, low power, low noise server, this fits the bill at the fraction of the cost of a full blown server.

Perfect home and audio video server. Also makes a nice NATing firewall. I have six of these little machines in service at work and at home doing various tasks. I like the fact they just work.

Although it is a small server, I like to rack because it takes up little space, and serves small data traffic, such as IP telephony. I recommend for small and medium businesses that require telephony with Asterisk or Elastik.

If you require high data traffic, do not choose this product can build another of the same brand Supermicro but with other more robust technical characteristics.

    Leistung:
