Photo is of two large bananas I sliced in under twenty seconds. This is one of the kitchen gadgets that you don't know you need, until you use it.Great price, Great Quality! I highly recommend! If you are reading new reviews first, read some of the older reviews. They are hilarious!
My colleague and I laughed when we found a link to this banana slicer on Amazon and asked each other "How hard can be it to slice a banana?" Well, about one week later I came across this exact slicer in a kitchen gadget store and knew I had to order it. Now I'm not laughing any longer, because:
- A medimum-size banana can be sliced in four passes through the gadget. - All slices are a perfect 1/4" wide. - If you use a dehydrator to dehydrate your own fruits, this slicer makes sure all the banana pieces are even so that they dry at the same time. - Uniform banana slices on jello, cereal, or desserts make for great presentation when serving food.
Cleaning is easy as long as you use a brush; otherwise it can be difficult to clean the blades thoroughly. Of course, use caution when cleaning and do not leave this tool around children as they can put their fingers in the chamber and get hurt when squeezing the handles--but this is just common sense for any kitchen tool.
For a person who uses a dehydrator or just wants presentable banana slices, this is a must have. For others, it's a great conversation piece and nifty tool. For those who slice one banana every so often, don't bake or use a dehydrator or have no one to converse with, then this would be a frivolous purchase.
I received one as a gift about two years ago and used it every day with my morning routine of coffee and steel-cut oats - always with bananas unless I forget to buy more. I don't know why but I never get tired of bananas in my oats. Other fruit get boring after less than a week, even mango.
I washed and shook the slicer dry every day, but didn't realize that leaving it upright in my dish rack encouraged water to drip onto the spring. I think two years of good service is adequate, so I simply ordered another. When I thought some more about it on the day it arrived, I realized it probably had a warranty of some kind, which was verified by an easy web search. After a cheerful email exchange with the manufacturer there is now a replacement on its way to me. Even if the springs rust out again I should be good for four more years! But I think I'll do better about drying the one I bought from Amazon, and the replacement will stay new - either becoming a gift, or stored as a back-up.
While the first one was still pretty new to me, I bought lunch at a gourmet food truck meetup, where one truck, I believe it was "Waffle Amore," specialized in waffles. After ordering a "bananas foster" waffle, I watched them use the same tool. Theirs was covered in banana bits, because they only need to wash it a few times a day, but they loved it too, and we had a nice laugh "bonding" over a banana slicing tool.
I was looking for a way to quickly and uniformly slice bananas in quantity for the purpose of making dehydrated banana chips. I selected two items to try, the Chef'n Bananza, featured here, and the Fox Run 4069 Banana Slicer . The Fox Run product was a big disappointment, and you can read the details of why in my review of that item. Fortunately, there was no such "slip up" with the a-peeling Chef'n Bananza.
At first I was afraid the Chef'n had a problem, in that when I took it out of the package it had a tendency to stick in the closed position. However, I ran it through the dishwasher prior to using it in anger, and for reasons unknown, that seemed to clear whatever was causing it to bind. This obstacle out of the way, I set out to slice some firm ripe bananas I had on hand.
The slices were uniform except for the end pieces. This was due to the curved shape of the fruit, a problem that the Fox Run tried, and failed, to address. Operation of the Chef'n was quick and easy, and I was able to dispatch an entire hand of bananas in record time. The (inevitable) problem of the irregular end pieces was more than offset by the uniformity of the other pieces, and the ease and speed of use.
I have a good collection of quality kitchen knives, of all types and designs. I like to think I am reasonably skilled in their correct use. I also have more kitchen gadgets than I have room to store. But in spite of all these reasons not to need or want this little gadget, I am very pleased to have it, and perfectly willing to find a place to put it. If you slice bananas with any regularity, and/or if you care about producing perfect uniform slices, either for aesthetics of presentation, or consistency of cooking and drying, the Chef'n is a must have.
I am replacing a style that had plastic blades and they would bend a lot and eventually broke. This one has held up well many months. It's very sturdy and is basically a banana guillotine. It's easy to clean by hand with a brush. I haven't tried using the dishwasher but it seems like it would survive OK. My advice is to clean it immediately as it's easy. As the banana dries on it become hard to remove. I like that you can clean the entire circumference of the blade by pressing it closed.
Got it yesterday. Tried it this morning over my cereal. It cut thin slices uniformly. Very easily. I have a spray on my faucet and if cleaned immediately it took the debris off very nicely. You can either swish it in soapy water afterwards or use a soapy sponge to finish cleaning it but I would suggest that you do this immediately after use so that any debris will not dry onto the device. This made it very easy to clean. I let it drip dry. Overall, I am very satisfied with the results of using this device.
It does what it claims for the most part, but this is negated by the fact that it is nearly impossible to clean. I don't have a dishwasher, but I rinsed it throughly after use and even tried presoaking in soapy water
Does what it says - it is efficient at slicing bananas. I used it when cutting up 12 bananas to be fed into a dehydrator. After about 6 bananas, it has mushed them enough that you have to stop and wash it - takes about 5 seconds. Personally, I wanted it to slice them just a little bit thicker, but thats my my use - if you are using it to eat fresh, its probably about right. Is it worth it to slice just one banana? I'd say not, but maybe your level of effort scale is different to mine. It would slice it well, you'd just have to clean it after a single use. How long will it last? No obvious flaws in design. I didnt see any rubbing/flaking of plastic, and I cant see the blades ever wearing out if used on just bananas.
Endlich fündig geworden! Der Banana Slicer funktioniert einwandfrei, ist leicht zu reinigen und ich würde und werde ihn auf jeden Fall wieder kaufen ...
