I'd seen Anna Karczmarczyk in the excellent film “Chce Sie Zyc” (English title “Life Feels Good”) . She had a supporting role in that film and, as I thought she was very good in her role, I looked on IMDb to see what else she might have been in, and came across what was her first feature film role, and it turned out to be as one of the central characters in “Galerianki” – the character of Alicja, who is known as Ali.
Looking at the picture of the DVD cover and seeing the (American) English title for the film – “Mall Girls”, it wasn't (or so I thought) the look of a film that would appeal to me. The picture on the DVD case suggested to me that “Mall Girls” (original Polish title “Galerianki”) might be some kind of a comedic film about fashion conscious young women in Poland.
But I'd be wrong in thinking that, as first of all it is a drama rather than a comedy and whilst “Mall shopping” might be a part of the film's story, there is much more to the film's story than retail therapy.
A work of fiction it might be but this must also be saying something social comment-wise, in what is a gritty drama that director Katarzyna Roslaniec based on some real lifestyles she had come across in Twenty-first Century Poland.
This is a really well made film, and yet it was the director's first feature film, as well as being actress Anna Karczmarczyk's first feature film, and it is also the first feature film for the three actresses who play the parts of the other main female characters. One of those three, Dagmara Krasowska who plays Milena is particularly good.
Had I not seen Anna Karczmarczyk in “Life Feels Good” then I would probably not have given “Mall Girls” a chance, and I'd have missed out on an excellent debut (for quite a few people) film.
The story which covers a number of themes is told very well by a director and cast, all of who have a great deal of talent.
All of the writing on the DVD case and all of the on screen menus are in Polish, although the menus are easy enough to navigate.
The film has optional English Subtitles.
