Criterion issued a double disc of Andrei Tarkovsky's haunting Solaris in 2002, so what's new about this 2011 release? The actual transfer of the film, that's what: this hi-def version is absolutely lush in its colors and textures, from the eerie waving of underground reeds in the Earth sequences to the swirling oceans of the planet Solaris. The difference could be a game-changer, even if you're already a fan of the film; when a director seeks to put you through a complete aural-visual experience, the detail is everything. The other special features are retained from the previous Criterion set, and they are definitive: half-hour interviews with the marvelously descriptive actress Natalya Bondarchuck and cinematographer Vadim Yusov, a 16-minute interview with art director Mikhail Romadin (who remembers Tarkovsky's reaction to seeing the great special effects of 2001: "Let's make ours look like a broken-down old bus and not a futuristic fantasy"), and a 21-minute talk with the film's inventive composer, Eduard Artemyev. About 25 minutes of alternate or deleted scenes are interesting if not essential. Absolutely Amazing!

I have been a fan of SiFi for many decades partially due to scientific interest and partially for looking at the world in new and novel ways.

I thought I had seen it all, but this movie amazed me beyond words. It opens one's mind in ways that is hard to put into words. I have read many of the negative reviews and quite frankly, they don't get it. This movie is not about special effects or dialog, neither does it claim to be about metaphysics. This movie basically challenges our understanding of the world in ways that are refreshing and novel to say the least.

I have watched it many times on Hulu and when they took it off, I decided to order the Blue Ray former Amazon. It is a movie that I will always treasure.

Solaris is more than a film, it's a deeply affecting cinematic experience. Tarkovsky's artistic vision, poetic, refined, subtle, yet stunning, has the capability of making a profound cerebral impact upon the viewer with breathtaking scenery, mystic and melancholic atmospherics, a compelling storyline, and exceptional acting.

Despite my premium praise, Solaris is not an easy watch. It requires your full attention. The opening sequences may be too slow, solemn, or demanding for most people. If the pace doesn't deter you, you might find the plot or some parts of the story puzzling. Watching it for the first time may be a challenge, so, in order to fully enjoy it and be rewarded by truly moving, exceptional entertainment, you'll need to stack up your patience.

Solaris is beyond sci-fi, it's emotionally complex, psychological, philosophical, and enigmatic. It involves man, space, and the unknown. Metaphysics. Love. Tragedy. Regret. Hope and despair. It's about a quest to unravel the mystery behind a cosmic force capable of manipulating the mind of man. It also tells the story of the inner journey of space explorer, Kris Kelvin, who must face a past tragedy from a new set of bewildering circumstances and search for hope in what appears to be a stultified future.

Tarkovsky was a brilliant filmmaker and Solaris is one of his best. It's a film that begs repeating and one you won't forget. Rarely do I ever give such high praise to any film. I can usually find fault even with my favorites. Solaris needs no changes, no reworkings. It's a completely engrossing, outstanding work of ART. If you are taken by Solaris, I strongly recommend what I feel are his next best films (in no specific order): Ivan's Childhood, Stalker, Mirror, Andrei Rublev, and Nostalgia.

Great Science Fiction Film By Tarkovski Now Given the Criterion Treatment in Blu Ray!

While not Tarkovski's greatest work, this his take on a reply to Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" is certainly unique and unlike Kubrick's masterpiece the emphasis is more on the cerebral aspects with very little attention spent on the science and technology elements. Here we get philosophical questions such as how would we react if our consciences actually could act out against us to convict us of the things we have done in the past and feel guilty or sorry for? Would the reality of facing the results of our actions cause us to harm ourselves physically? Do we try to ignore it ever happened? Would we try to change and undo what's been done? Would that work or are we doomed to commit the same types of mistakes over and over again? This Criterion release is well done with good sound quality and picture quality as well. Also included is a 24-page booklet containing essays on the film. Irrespective of the genre this is a very good film that generates thought and leaves you wanting to revisit it from time to time.

OMG I love this movie

I'm now all 'Solarised' up. I have the book in print, in Kindle, in audio for Kindle, and the American and Russian (in DVD and now Blu-ray) versions of the movie. I always tell people read the book. Or at least watch the Russian version of the film first. I think you need to see it the long version. I don't love subtitles but in a way I like the added attention required watching it with subtitles. I also like watching the longer version. You need to sit through the whole movie. You need to feel the long drawn out experience, to get the frustration, the confusion, like waking up through several layers of dreaming. You need to go on the deep inward/outward journey that the planet's gradual development and awakening requires and demands. It's so important to feel that slow awakening. Yeah, I love this story in all it's forms--I even like the American version but read the book and see the Russian movie first. And then see the American version sometime if you don't have anything else to do.

Solaris (Солярис) is a 1972 Soviet science fiction film based on Stanisław Lem's novel of the same name published in 1961. The film was co-written and directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. The film is a meditative psychological science fiction drama occurring mostly aboard a space station orbiting the fictional planet Solaris. Here are the pros and cons as I see it.
Pros:
1. Good casting and acting.
2. Good cinematography and nice sets.
3. Interesting story.
Cons:
1. I don't mind artist films but this film moves way to slow, feel asleep the first time I tried to watch it. Finally stayed awake my third try.
2. I film could have been edited better and made shorter with just as much or more impact.

Intensely emotional in a Sci-fi setting

I saw Solaris nearly 20 years ago and read the book on which it was based. Frankly, the movie isn't much as I remembered it. Perhaps I conflated the book and movie? Maybe there is another version from the 70s? Just having watched it again, I'd say the film deals with deeper more painful emotions than I remembered. The unmistakable religious overtones I think make Solaris somewhat allegorical. Compelling movie worth watching especially if you like Russian film from the Cold War era.
