I have wanted this since I saw the first ad in Wired Magazine. By accident I noticed Amazon had them in stock and at 1200 dollars it was a total impulse purchase.

Packing: A

Docs: B

Ease of setup: B plus

Like the other review the bottom screen is pretty tough to observe under most lighting conditions. I did like the software, virtual keyboard and apps, very well executed.

However, the fan...is-the-worst-fan-ever! Loud and I can actually change the pitch by pressing harder on the virtual keyboard. A deal breaker. Sure, this could be defective if I ignore all the other complaints about Acer fans but the straw that broke my back was Acer technical support. So three hours into ownership I called Acer, of course you have to recite a 22 digit S/N into a computerized system and hope that it can understand your inflections of your voice, it didn't for me until after 5 failed attempts.

I felt like a lottery winner when I was finally admitted entry into Acer technical support, unfortunately it was in India. After the standard banter that is borderline insane ( who writes this stuff for these people) he asks me to remove the back cover, I inform him page 5 of the guide says if back cover is removed your warranty is removed...his reply is saying he is sorry and to remove the back cover so we can " WE REMOVE THE KEYBOARD" I ask him if 1) he heard what I said 2) does he know what this product is...he apologizes for my difficulty and asks me to hold before hanging up on me.

At this point even if they sent me a perfect device I could not run the risk I would have to call Acer with a problem.

FYI you can be patched directly into sales in the US if you want to buy an extended warranty. ;)

This is a fairly fast system. Decent enough video - can play quite a few games pretty well. However, there aren't a lot of applications that support multi-touch especially all-point touch.

Me, I'm a software developer, and am working on a few ideas for projects I wanted, and have learned some technical limitations. At this point, only one screen gets touches at a time, and my application only gets a single touch event on the lower screen; although I know that acer's stock scrapbook application definatly can recognize multiple points. Also, the WM_TOUCH information that is received does not have the width/height of the touches.

The touch surface itself is Cypress.

Someday it will be a good platform. I find it relatively easy to type on the surface except the keys my pinkies hit - my finger span is wider on my pinky than other fingers - would be nice to scale the keyboard in sections. Also from habit of touch typing, hitting the shift or control keys, I end up folding a finger back so my nail hits the screen instead of fleshy capacitive detectable material.

THe keyboard doesn't behave the same way a keyboard does - that is it doesn't send the key press when you are holding the key down, it waits until you release the key then sends a single down-up message. This makes WASD keys unusable for moving in a game.

A single touch doesn't always resemble a mouse click to games, so even piloting menus can be difficult.

I really wanted to love the Iconia and I was very intrigued by the design. I have had many touchscreen devices over the years (Windows, iOS and Android) and this is by far the most disappointing of them all. The biggest problem is the extremely poor TN displays that were used. The bottom screen is almost unusable even in a dark room with no reflections because the vertical viewing angles are abysmal. Even if I could have lived with the weight (6 lbs), 2 hour battery, lack of SD slot and fan noise there is no way I could accept the washed out bottom screen. To be clear, both screens seem equally poor but it is easy enough to position the top screen at a usable angle but nearly impossible to position yourself so the bottom screen isn't washed out. There were also some scratches on the paint that I noticed as I was peeling off the protective plastic.

If you want an excellent touchable Windows PC I'd highly recommend the ASUS EP121 slate if you can find one. The EP121's screen is miles better and the device is far more practical.
