My wife and sixteen year old son are always in a struggle to find shows the three of us can watch. We were with Caslte for awhile but then my son tired of it and we find Criminal Minds well at times a bit "mindless" and repetative and then we found quite by accident since no one seemed to be talking about it the show Southland. Well we are through the third and just started the fourth season and I have to say as someone who was an actor on Hill Street Blues and who thought NYPD Blue would never be topped here is a show that is only for me at least passed by The Shield.
The acting is as good as it gets and the scripts and the direction are on a par with the best of cable. One of the real brilliant touches, a trait it shares with the best of Law and Order, is that the backstories don't get in the way of the individual cases. The off the job love affairs and drug and parent problems are seamlessly integrated into each and every episode. I also think because it is created by a woman (sort of like what happens on Scott and Bailey) that the emotional subtexts and the female characters are stronger than on male "glance" driven action shows.
It is a show however that is a bit of an acquired taste which is probably why it didn't quite survive although 5 seasons would make it a hit on the BBC. It is gritty and violent and like The Shield shows a non tourist version of LA, my home for 24 years, but unlike The Shield you are not asked to "root" for a "hero" who is essentially immoral but rather you are motivated to admire and be thankful for the men and women who "Protect and Serve"
At least give this show a chance. I think if you love great TV you'll will love Southland.

NBC made a huge mistake, letting this show go. I look forward to this show having a long run like "Homicide: Life on the Street". When is King going to get her Emmy??

It typically takes me a while to get attached to any characters of a new show, however this one had me hooked on the 1st season. The depth of characters, the heart stopping action, excellent above the bar acting by all involved. This is right up there with Law & Order but it still has a sharp edge to that L&O lost a while ago. Enjoy!

I can't believe I just discovered this show!!! It is the BOMB!!! Love, love, love the gritty reality, characters, plot and pacing. Am consuming it too fast, binging on it and already worried about when it ends how empty my life will be. Love how they handle gay cops so laid back like, strong female characters, and complexity of relationships and dialogue totally realistic.

Typical... my wife and I 'heard' this was a good series and with it being summer we decided to record it. Of course we recorded season 6 (which **might** be the end of the show... NO!) and were BLOWN away!

LOVING the 6th season we decided we needed to know how it all had lead up to the amazing conclusion (?) of the series and began at season 1 of this series and now are on season 3. Gripping, heart stopping, eye opening, and when just when you think it's about to take a lull... it hits you right square in the head as it did last night with us in the shocking ending of "4". Holy boogers!

Now you might think this is just a cop series and it's not. My wife LOVES this series as much as I do. As a matter of fact, she is the one who recommends we watch it when she's had enough of my other cop shows.

Just an amazing series. It gets better and better as each episode unfolds. The characters are ALL fully explained, and you are vested in each and every one of them.

If you feel there is nothing to watch this summer... you are SO mistaken. WATCH THIS SERIES from start to finish. You need to start at the beginning. Trust me on this. You will not regret it.

Great show. One of the most realistic police drama's ever. The vast is awesome and I wish this was still on the air.

The only issue is the great opening theme song is changed on the digital downloads. That song really made the show. Why it is different I do not know.

I love the TV show, they have good actors and portray the hardest job and most underappreciated job of a LEO. If you enjoy great LEO shows you'll enjoy this, its a great combo with the End of Watch movie! Although the stories are not related they are both great. To bad the retards with TNT canceled it, but you'll enjoy all 7 season!
