- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2025Blake Crouch’s Run is a nonstop thrill ride that hooks you from the very first page. The pacing is intense, and the high-stakes tension keeps you completely glued to the story. The characters feel so real, which makes their fight to survive even more gripping. Crouch’s writing is vivid, and the twists make the chaos feel almost too believable. If you’re in the mood for a fast-paced, can’t-put-it-down kind of book, Run absolutely delivers.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2025Kind of a bizarre story, a lot of violence and massacres. I found it hard to swallow that the main characters just happened to survive what basically are un-survivable circumstances minus the help of a few miracles from God. There is a lot of action though, and the story moves pretty fast.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2025I bought this because I like the genre and I like the author, but I like others more so the book needed to stand on its own.
The premise of the story was interesting, although I wasn't sure how well the focus on escaping, rather than fighting, would carry it.
Color me entertained and glad I rolled the dice on this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2011The bottom line: Would I recommend this book to my friends? Possibly, but only if it came up in conversation. This was an entertaining book, but not great enough that I would tell my friends that they should read it out of the blue. However, if my friends were talking about post-apocalyptic, end-of-the-world stuff, I'd probably throw it in there.
I was a bit disappointed by this book and feel let down by the reviews from other readers. I haven't read Stephen King's books for years, so maybe the quality of his writing has gone down. However, in Run, there is a major lack of character development and overall details. On the other hand, I will augment that train of thought by saying that the novel keeps you wanting to know what will happen next, hence a 3-star rating rather than a 1-star rating.
I will begin with my negative thoughts so I can end this review on a positive note. The thing that upset me most about this book was how lucky the characters were considering how unlucky they were. Without divulging too much, I'll just say that whenever you think the character should be killed, they somehow get lucky and survive. I can understand this once or maybe twice, but in this book it happens over and over. Read the book and you'll understand.
One thing that I used to enjoy about King's writing was the amount of detail and character development he writes into his novels. King was (I say was because I haven't read anything that he's written in the past 20 or so years) very good at writing so much detail about his characters and their surroundings that you felt like you knew the characters for years (regardless if they were good or bad) and he provided enough detail about where they were that you could oftentimes see, feel, taste, and smell the things that they did. To say that this book was at King's level is somewhat of an understatement.
Don't get me wrong, I've read the reviews in which the author puts ordinary people in bizarre situations...but if that is the basis for comparing this book to the work of King, then there are a lot of books that can be compared to "It", "The Stand", and other books of that level of writing.
So now that I've gone on my tangent about the things that book lacks, I will say that it still is a page turner. It wasn't bad enough that I lacked the desire to just ditch the book. I genuinely wanted to know what would happen and the book kept my attention enough to make me finish it in two days. I think it is safe to say that I really wanted something truly bad to happen to the characters (whether or not something does, I won't reveal).
Maybe you will have a different outlook on the book once you've completed reading it. This is a book that I would recommend if it is the type of book that you like to read. I wouldn't classify it as horror, but it is definitely a hard thriller. Ultimately, be prepared for an overall good read, but also be ready to have many of your questions go unanswered.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2015While not living up to the excellent standard of "The Wayward Pines" series, Blake Crouch's "Run" is still an exciting and worthwhile read. The basic plot is simple, although far-fetched. Suddenly and without apparent provocation, a good part of the population of the US (and northern Mexico) starts killing the rest of the population. In fact, those "marked" for death have their names and addresses read over the Emergency Broadcasting Network, the only media still functioning by the third day or so. The killers can identify each other by a glow around their head. The victims have no such visual aid but learn it's better to trust no one. The theory for the murderous insanity, suggested fairly early, and frustratingly no more advanced by the end of the book is that the killers were all those out doors during some atmospheric event, some bizarre aurora. The victims were indoors asleep or protected by an overcast sky. Both the civilian and military authorities are of no help because they were similarly affected.
The main characters are a family of four, already frantically packing to escape when they hear their names read over the radio. Starting from New Mexico, they head for Canada because they hear (by ham radio) that Canada might not be affected. Except for rare, brief moments when they find gasoline, food, water, weapons, and/or shelter they are constantly on the run and always in danger, leading to relentless pacing of the book. As some other reviewers have said, it is hard to put down. It seems 98% of those they meet want to kill them. It is not clear whether this is due to the number affected or that most of the good guys have been quickly and easily killed. In fact, how quickly and efficiently the "good guys" are wiped out rises some philosophical issues about good and evil, but the book doesn't deal with that.
Another criticism, mentioned by several reviewers, is the redundancy of the action. The good guys run into bad guys, get away, find a few supplies (e.g., a can of oil and a package of beef jerky), briefly find shelter, run into more bad guys, and repeat. Another weakness in the plot is that at one or two points the bad guys capture the good guys only to later torture and kill them. Why not just kill them immediately? Other minor points: (1) at one time the main character drinks out of a toilet bowl without suffering any ill effects and (2) the main female is a family physician who leaves on their trip apparently without any medical supplies (even antibiotics, sedatives, suture kit, syringes, needles, IV's, or analgesics).
Notice to readers and Amazon: I just finished reading "Run" (3/20/25) and tried to write a review. The Amazon site presented me with the above review, which they claim I wrote in the past. While I agree with the detailed critique, I certainly would not give the book 4 stars given the problems described. Nor would I title the review "Great Book with a Few Flaws." Aside from the constant extreme and mindless violence, the ending is unsatisfactory. The only thing "great" about the book is the two verses quoted from the Book of Revelation near the end. I'd give it one star.

Peter ZmyjReviewed in Germany on August 22, 20115.0 out of 5 stars Einer der besten Thriller-Autoren, die ich kenne

A. C. MagencioReviewed in Spain on September 4, 20162.0 out of 5 stars Me esperaba mucho más
