There are already plenty of reviews of this movie so I will limit my comments in that regard to saying that I think it is one of the finest ghost stories ever filmed and in fact, possibly *THE* finest (I would consider the older version of "The Haunting" starring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom a close second however).
I was caught by surprise by the high quality of this DVD, buying it because it was the only DVD release of this movie that I could find, expecting it to be some lower quality copy and hoping that it would last me until a first rate, major studio produced DVD hopefully was finally released. To my amazement, I found this version (by "Media Asia Group", whom I had never heard of before) to be of top quality. The picture is sharp and vivid and the DVD was obviously produced from a very high quality master. It also comes complete with several extras and a menu. This is no cheap "bootleg quality" copy such as those sometimes received from less well-known sources.
There is some slight "noise" or "static" on the print which is very common on older movies. It is not very noticeable however and doesn't detract from the viewing experience of this movie in the least. For a movie that's almost 70 years old, it's not bad at all.
I know that many people have been waiting for a good DVD release of this great film. For those who have been waiting, you can purchase this version with confidence. In my opinion, it is as well done as any that may ever be released by a major studio and possibly even better. For that matter, given the legal rights problems of older movies these days who knows if it will ever be released elsewhere (although I would love to see the "Criterion Collection" release it as well).
My copy says that "Media Asia Group" produces their DVDs in numbered copies and in limited runs of 1000 copies each. I don't know if that means they will stop producing this movie at 1000 copies or will just start an additional run at that point. My copy is numbered between 500 and 600 (I don't have the exact number in front of me) however, so I would grab it while you can.
One last point I will make. I had occasion to contact the distributor for this movie on Amazon Marketplace (as of this writing, "DracDvds") with some questions about a tiny scratch on my DVD. They couldn't have responded more quickly, been more polite and concerned and offered to send me a replacement DVD immediately (even though I hadn't requested it).

A brother and sister move into an old seaside house they find abandoned for many years on the English coast. Their original enchantment with the house diminishes as they hear stories of the previous owners and meet their daughter (now a young woman) who now lives as a neighbor with her grandfather. Also heard are unexplained sounds during the night. It becomes obvious that the house is haunted. The reasons for the haunting and how they relate to the daughter whom the brother is falling in love with, prove to be a complex mystery. As they are compelled to solve it, the supernatural activity at the house increases to a frightening level.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2012If you are a true movie fan, and you must be if you're interested in this wonderful 1944 black and white British film, do not buy this. It is a copy of a copy from Asia (I think) and it has lost the clarity (it is very grainy) of the original VHS version and, therefore, the mysterious atmosphere created for this truly scary, paranormal mystery with its wonderful cast. Robert Osborn of TCM has said, it is one of his favorite films of all time.
Why they have not turned out a quality DVD of this film is the question. But this version is substandard from beginning to end. Do not waste your money. What a huge disappointment.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2012I have waited for years to see this on DVD, it is a great story. I am disappointed with the video quality. For supposedly remastered - It does not look better (and maybe not as good) as my old VHS copy. The trailer is unwatchable with heavy digital artifacts. The quality in the movie is mostly fair, but there are periods where there is a jitterly look to the picture.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2011The movie CD would not work in my CD player, even though the player plays all other CDs and is a new one. However, the CD would work when played on my computer. The movie is an old one, made in 1944, so it is not as crisp and clear as one would like which is the way it is with old movies from that time. The provider/distributor gave me a $10 refund which helped a lot since I couldn't play it on my CD player, and it was an expensive CD. I did appreciate that. This provider/distributor was anxious to be of help.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2011This is a great old movie with fine performances from the leads, and an enchanting debut from Gail Russell. There are two ghosts on offer, one good, the other evil, protecting/haunting "Stella" the character played by Russell. Milland manages to do the expected thing and falls in love with Stella, at the same time dedicating to her an incomplete piano piece that became the great jazz standard "Stella by Starlight". What more could you want? Oh yes, unusually the film also manages to combine tension and frights with some really fine wit and humour - a difficult balancing act!
