A non-power user's take

As much as I love my computer and as much as I love gaming, I tend to game on consoles and use the PC more for the Internet and applications like Photoshop, with only the occasional strategy game like those in the Civilization or Battle for Middle-Earth series. So, since I was building (somewhat) on a budget, I didn't need a super-awesome card, but I did want more power than my board's onboard capability could provide. I also like running a dual-monitor setup, so any video card I bought would have to support that.

Within these parameters, this card performs beautifully. Dual DVI ports handle both monitors with ease, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the card came with a DVI-VGA adapter so I could hook up my VGA flat-panel right off the bat next to my DVI widescreen. I've been able to run all my games at their highest graphical settings without a single hiccup.

Driver installation was also a snap with the included disk, and I particularly like how you could specify which drive to install to, as my OS is on a small 40GB SSD with a larger 750GB HDD for file storage (I still installed it on the SSD for speed, but it was nice to have the option not to *have* to).

Keep in mind that the car takes up the vertical space of two PCI slots, so depending on your motherboard it may cover up the slot below it. I lost a PCI x1 slot (the small black ones), but I wasn't using it anyway and had another one to boot.

If you're not looking for the absolute pinnacle of cutting-edge graphics, but still demand good performance from your graphics card while maintaining a reasonable price point, I highly recommend considering this card.

One really good card.

Purchasing this GPU brought the cost of my 1st build to the $700 range. A similarly powered unit would have gone for at least $1200 from one of the commercial concerns. Both of the graphics
scores in WEI are 7.4. Installing this GPU in the machine was just as simple as could be. It requires one 6 pin plug from the PSU, an adapter is provided to draw power from two molex connectors
if needed. I did not run the enclosed disk but went to nVidia and nVidia installed the drivers. nVidia has automatically updated the drivers twice since the 1st install on 8/31/12. (!!) This GPU
will produce some heat when playing some games, a well ventilated case is a plus for sure.
I paid $10.00 for 'same day delivery', because of the Labor Day wknd., and UPS did deliver it to my door 12 hours later. I was expecting to pay as much as $20 for 'next day delivery', so this
was certainly one of my happier purchases from Amazon.

A Graphics card that really preforms!!!

I have a gaming computer I needed to upgrade. I had the GTS 450 before and thought wow I need more Graphics power!!!!!. So I decided to take this card for a spin and wow am I amazed at how this card sped up most of my games. I just popped this guy right into my system and there I was enjoying better graphics so yes I do recommend this card for anyone who needs to upgrade from an older card but does not want to spend a lot.

***Update 6/15/12***: This card still rocks! it has delivered great performance and plays tons of games. My system currently: Intel core 2 duo e7500(2.93 ghz), 6GB Ram, and this card. Overall I have seen many improvements in my systems speed plus more and more games i can finally play now!. Also, UPDATE to the latest drivers which now are at 301.42. With the current drivers I have seen a performance increase in gaming and with Nvidia's new technology fxaa, this card has brang all the games i play to their knees. Overall, still a very worthwhile purchase.

***Update 1/4/2014***: This Card is still working! though now it is old and the Drivers are not the best for it, I would have to say 314.22 has been the most rock solid for this card. I have since though past the computer containing this card onto my brother so this will be my last update but my bro says he loves it over his old HP that had a 6 series card.

Great mid range card for a low end price

I purchased a Dell Inspiron computer a couple of years ago for general household use with no plans to use it for gaming. However, I couldn't resist buying Starcraft II and Skyrim, so I bought this card as well to upgrade my computer.

The price of the card alone is impressive, since this is a mid level card which I was able to buy for under $100 (Amazon was running a special, so I think the normal price is $110 or so). This is probably the cheapest card available as of this review that will run modern computer games on the highest graphics settings.

Installation was very easy; it took about 10 minutes to open the case and put the card into the PCI-e x16 slot on my motherboard, and another 5 minutes to install the drivers which EVGA ships with the card. However, please note that this card requires a power supply rated at least 400 watts, and which has a 12 volt rail that can deliver 20 amps (one of those cords with a 6 pin connector). If, like me, you are upgrading a general purpose computer, you may have to upgrade your power supply at the same time.

The 550's real world performance was surprisingly good. In Starcraft II, I put all the graphics options on "Ultra" settings at a 1920x1080 resolution, which would usually be a tough job for a $100 graphics card. This Geforce card, however, never complained or dropped below 45 frames per second, and averaged around 60 fps. That's more than enough performance for a casual game player or casual video editor. As with the power supply, you should be aware that many games or video editing tasks will require a CPU that can match your graphics card, so your results may not be as good as mine if you have a low end CPU in your computer.

The one aspect of this card that I was most apprehensive about was overheating. I had heard some horror stories from people who had damaged their new graphics card by installing it into a computer that didn't have enough ventilation. My card never got above 74 degrees Celsius after an hour at 100% usage, and I have case with only one vent and fan. So while overheating is definitely not a problem, the flip side is that the card has a very large heatsink covered by a plastic case, and a powerful fan. The heatsink makes the card so large that it covers a second PCI slot, which shouldn't be a problem unless you are using three or four PCI cards for some reason. Slightly more annoying is the fan, which can get loud when the card is under a heavy load. I didn't think the fan noise was bad enough to deduct a star, but more sensitive users might disagree.

Lastly, if you use MSI Afterburner, you have plenty of control over the card. I normally don't overclock anything in my computer, but out of curiosity I did overclock the 550 by 10% for a little while before putting it back to normal. Overclocking took about 5 seconds with Afterburner, and you can even change the core voltage of the card with just a couple of clicks (only do that if you really know what you're doing!). During the short time while I had my card overclocked, everything seemed to work quite well. Of course, if you are changing your card's settings, there are no guarantees, but overclocking enthusiasts will find this card very easy to mess with. Even if you have no interest in overclocking, you can still use Afterburner to slow down the speed of the fan and make the card quieter; if you haven't changed any other settings on the card it should be no problem to slow down the fan speed a little.

Well, this review rambled on longer than I meant it to, so let me sum up: this card is quite cheap considering the performance it delivers, it's easy to install and use, and it is very good at everything that an average video card buyer would want to do. I unreservedly recommend the GTX 550 ti to anyone looking for a middle-of-the-road graphics card.
