I was looking at Arcea / LSI hardware RAID cards to improve the availability of our storage unit. The SansDigital TowerRAID+ is a very cost effective way of getting some decently reliable storage. It works great under linux, presenting true hardware raid as a /dev/sb device! (See the caveat on the HBA driver though). Performance is good with "cheap" SATA drives; I'm getting 160-180 MB/s over the eSATA cable both read and write, and it passed the mythtv DVR test admirably (write 3 HD streams and play back one at the same time ...).

Caveats:

* Switching to RAID mode is not intuitive; the reset button on back needs to be held _while powering on_
* The main fan is big and quiet and provides good cooling, but the power supply is annoying high pitch. Ok for us because it is in the server room, not where we work.
* The currently supplied HBA is a HighPoint RocketRAID 622. For some unfathomable reason HighPoint (Marvell?) has NOT GPLd the driver and it has NOT been reverse engineered. So if you are going to use it in a Cent or RHEL environment you'll have to build the driver yourself and taint the kernel. Fortunately, the thing works just fine over the built into the motherboard eSATA port (and probably USB 3.0 for that matter) so the HBA isn't really necessary unless you need the eSATA port multiplication.

Excellent product. Simple plug & Play. After inserting the hard drives, all I had to do was set the dip switches to the setup I wanted (Raid 5), power up with the reset switch and it was ready within 10 seconds to setup in Windows Disk Manager. While Sans Digital advises to use only enterprise drives, I have 3 setup with Western Digital Red drives and they work great.

* Advice: DO NOT attempt to use Western Digital green drives. It will work, but performance will be a crawl. Spend the extra 20% or so and make it work like it should... fast.
* Advice: Use identical drives.

[Update on 27 Mar, 2016]

Well, I had my first drive fail. I was in the midst of copying about 2 TB of data to a multimedia drive, and BAM! Halfway through, one of my drives failed. Now, the info I got was vague, because, all lights remained green, but I was getting an I/O error from Windows. Crossing my fingers, I rebooted the TowerRAID, and lo-and-behold, the indicator for the first drive went RED.

I had a spare identical 3TB drive of the shelf, so, crossing my fingers...
1) Powered down the TowerRAID
2) Disconnected the USB (for the heck of it)
3) Swapped the first drive for the new one
4) Powered up the TowerRAID

Bingo! The TowerRAID recognized the new drive and began rebuilding immediately. Left the house for about 8 hours and upon return, it was still rebuilding. I expected that, since the manual says to expect about 1 hr per 200 GB or 15 hours for my 3 TB drive.

Since the manual did state that I could use the array while rebuilding (with a performance hit), I decided to hook back up the USB and try to continue my copying (while rebuilding).

I see no real performance hit, so it must be negligible.

I bought this to add local storage to a media PC that I run PLEX on. Since I'm downloading lots of big movie files all the time it seemed the perfect fit. I outfitted it with five 2TB WD Red drives for a total of 10TB. With Raid 5 it's about 7.6TB.

Pros:
-Easy setup, the quick guide was all I needed to get it up and running in about 10 minutes (including adding the drives)
-Decent software, unlike some other enclosures this one comes with software to allow me to see the status of the drives and notify me (via email) of any failures or errors.
-Seems well constructed
-Price was very decent

Cons:
-The only downside is that it cannot dynamically expand a RAID array. If you want to use 5 drives you need to start with 5 in the beginning. Not a huge issue, just be aware when you set it up. You CAN expand it later and recreate the array with more drives, you'll just lose whatever was stored there in the old array.

Some people had said the power supply was loud. I didn't notice any noise, but it's in a storage closet in my house so that wouldn't have been an issue anyway.

Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend it to others.

This is basically an upgraded version of their older RAID enclosures. Seems to have added hardware RAID and USB3.0. You still have the older esata connector card if you want to use esata, but that requires a PCIe slot inside your computer to be used up. USB 3.0 just seems cleaner. No internal PCIe card needed but a slight reduction in bandwidth.

I have 3 of the older enclosures running off a dedicated PC which I've had now for 3 years or so running RAID 5 without issue. But I needed one that supported 4TB drives. This seemed great. Supports 4TB and USB 3.0! Win win.

I use it for JBOD for now but having the option for RAID is nice. It recognized all my drives and no issues so far. Seems a little better built then the older ones and it has activity LED's on the front and on the HDD trays if the door is open. Fan on the back for cooling.

If you do use this in a RAID setup, make sure the HDD's you get are designed for RAID and have TLER (Time limited Error Correction) or you'll see your RAID VOL drop out. I believe a lot of issues reported maybe do due to the HDD's used not being RAID capable. As I said, I have 3 of the older model enclosures running RAID 5 for years with no issues with RAID capable drives. Can't beat the price and I wish I could swap them out for this model.

FOLLOW UP: I moved over to RAID with this encosure using Hitachi Touro 4TB drives about a year ago. I pulled the drives out of their enclosures. Running RAID 5 now with 14.5TB usable drive space. I have another Touro as a spare (if needed). This enclosure has been rock solid. No RAID Volumes dropping out and with hardware Raid the time to build the RAID array takes seconds vs like a day with software RAID.
