Ich habe mir ein [[ASIN:B00KQEIMY6 Amazon Fire TV]] zugelegt und wollte dieses auch als Media Center verwenden, d.h. für das zentrale abspielen von Filmen/Videos, Bildern sowie meiner Musiksammlung.

Nach einiger Recherche bin ich auf Plex sowie Kodi/XBMC gekommen, welche beide ähnlich ausgerichtet sind, aber unterschiedliche Stärken haben.

Bei Plex muss neben dem Client auf dem Fire TV (oder einem beliebigen anderen Device) auch ein Plex Media Server aufgesetzt werden. Das kann ein normaler Rechner sein, oder wie bei mir eine NAS. Ich verwende eine [[ASIN:B00FWUQNDQ Synology DS214 play]], wofür eine direkte Plex Unterstützung vorhanden ist. Entsprechend ging die Einrichtung bei mir sehr schnell und ohne großen Aufwand.

Das Ergebnis ist anschaulich, d.h. Filme/Videos, Bilder und Musik werden übersichtlich und optisch gut aufbereitet dargestellt. Allerdings lässt sich das User Interface nicht verändern oder anpassen.

Probleme gab es allerdings bei der Wiedergabe von Filmen/Videos. Je nachdem in welchem Format diese vorhanden waren, ruckelten diese heftig, obwohl zwischen meiner NAS und dem Fire TV eine schnelle und stabile Netzwerkverbindung bestand.

Der Grund war schnell gefunden. Nativ (ohne Umwandlung) wird nur das MP4 Format unterstützt. Alle anderen Formate müssen zunächst vom Server umgewandelt werden, bevor diese abgespielt werden können. Da eine NAS keine sehr leistungsfähige CPU hat, war das Ergebnis entsprechend nicht optimal und es kam zu starken Rucklern oder kompletten Aussetzern.

Danach habe ich alle meine Filme ins MP4 Format gewandelt und in der Software den experimentellen Player aktiviert. Ab dann wurde die Wiedergabe deutlich besser und flüssiger, wenn auch einige Filme noch immer kleine (Mikro)Ruckler haben. Insgesamt gesehen kann man mit dem jetzigen Stand aber gut leben.

Wichtig! Eines Tages waren in meiner Bibliothek alle Filme verschwunden und auch nach mehreren Resets vom Fire TV kamen diese nicht wieder. Das Problem konnte behoben werden, indem ich bei Plex einen Account angelegt habe (kostet nichts). Danach habe ich in der Software das automatische einloggen aktiviert und ab dann waren alle Filme in der Bibliothek wieder vorhanden.

Zwischenzeitlich habe ich mir auch einen kostenpflichtigen Plex Premium Account zugelegt, da mir die Funktion gefallen hat, dass in meiner Musikbibliothek automatisch das entsprechenden Musikvideo eingebunden wird. Klar, Musikvideos kann ich mir auch über externe Apps anschauen, aber die Verknüpfung mit meiner Musikbibliothek fand ich spannend. Auf dem PC klappt das auch prima und mir gefällt diese Funktion wirklich gut, auf dem Fire TV funktioniert das aber leider nicht, d.h. das User Interface ist eingeschränkter als auch dem PC.

Um noch kurz zu Kodi/XBMC zu kommen. Ja, ich habe auch Kodi auf meinem Fire TV installiert und ich mag es. Kodi ist deutlich flexibler in den Einstellungsmöglichkeiten als Plex und auch Filme werden besser/flüssiger abgespielt. Damit Kodi gut funktioniert wie man es haben möchte, ist aber auch ein nicht unerheblicher Einrichtungsaufwand notwendig.

Insgesamt gesehen habe beide Programme ihre Stärken, Plex ist schnell eingerichtet und bietet schnell ein anschauliches Ergebnis. Kodi ist deutlich flexibler aber benötigt auch einen höheren Einrichtungsaufwand. Letztendlich ist es eine Geschmacksfrage.

Um zum Schluss zu kommen. Aufgrund meiner Erfahrungen kann ich Plex empfehlen, auch wenn ich Optimierungsbedarf bei der Wiedergabe von Filmen sehe.
