Thread Words

3.9 out of 5 stars 1,467 ratings

Thread Words is a word search game for Kindle.

Your goal is to find words in a 5 high grid of letters. Find words by selecting one letter from each column. On each level there are ten pairs of shapes. Make words matching each shape on the left with the same shape on the right to unlock the next level. After matching all shapes you can continue to find the rest of the words for a higher score or immediately move on to the next level.

The game progresses through 4 levels of difficulty, with grids that increase from 4 to 7 letters across. Each word you find is worth 20 points per letter, and if you find all of the qualifying words you get an 800 point bonus! Try to beat the clock or take your time in relaxed mode. The game tracks separate high scores for each mode.

Thread Words is a fun, and free, app for Kindle. It is easy to grasp the game play but challenges you with some of its words. I like that there is a relaxed mode in addition to the timed mode. The relaxed mode of game play imposes no time limit on completing a level and that makes it much more useable for me. The way the game is constructed is nice because it has some built-in ways to clue you in to possible word solutions. For instance, words that you have successfully guessed are shown in the word list in alphabetical order. So if you have missing words between completed words, you have a clue as to solving the missing word.

The game uses the 5-way controller to select letters and enter words. But you can also just use the keyboard if you're using a Kindle Keyboard and that makes game play faster.

You can forfeit a game and learn the solution which helps me out too.

I'm not a huge word game player... I don't play scrabble very often or do crosswords. But I do like this game because it isn't quite as time-consuming as scrabble and I can easily pick this game up and put it down, as time permits.

You can't argue with "free" and it's a nicely designed game all the way around.

Warning: this game is HIGHLY addictive... you will not be able to put your Kindle down once you start playing.

The game allows both a timed and a relaxed version of which I definitely prefer the latter to allow for finding all of the words. The first round consists of 4 letter words and lulls you into thinking this might be a lightweight easy, quick word game. However, but by the 8th round (of 10) you start to consider pausing the game and accessing a dictionary from your Home page (note: the Oxford Dictionary of English seems to be the best fit for this purpose as some of the words are true, older English).

A key element of the game that makes it enjoyable for the player is that you can choose to evaulate your success by the levels completed or the points earned, or both.

This game is the perfect combination of fun and challenge for anyone who loves the English language and word games. I highly recommend this game to anyone who loves to read - even for people who do not typically enjoy playing games!

Watch out, because this game is really addictive. Fortunately, it's also fun and, occasionally, introduces us to English words we've never heard of ("colones")?. The words once found are listed alphabetically at the bottom of the grid,
which is helpful, because the missing words are also represented in their proper alphabetical order by an appropriately placed blank line which tells you which words come before and after.

It's perhaps a flaw in the game that it frequently calls for one to make several words from one root word, such as drink, drinker, drinking, etc. Also, a possible problem for U.S. users is that they often use archaic or rarely used words which strike me as definite "Britishisms", such as crofter, shiing, mucking, etc.

The symbols which must be matched make the game both easier and more interesting. Warning: you can't access the next level when you get tired of the one you're on--you have to find all the symbol matches first, and your score suffers even then if you haven't found all the words possible for that puzzle.

I'm not sure what happens when you've tackled all ten levels. I'll miss it when it's gone!

I like Sudoku until they get really hard and I enjoy playing Freecell. This justs sets you up with my perspective. Thread Word is easy to learn, challenging to play, and definitely addictive for me. It is sort of a cross between word search and word jumbles.

What is helpful is that as you find words, it puts them in the completed list in alphabetical order so if there is one empty space between two completed words, you know what letters the word to be found must start with. This can be particularly helpful when they have chosen some plural of an obscure word that isn't in my daily vocabulary such as "yeps", "yups" or "sups". That would be my only gripe; some of the words are pretty obscure. I was tempted to give it 4 stars for that reason, but really, for what it is, it's a fun game.

The game is also well suited to the keyboard limitations of the Kindle. As long as you can use the navigational button, you can manuever around the game. If you have to exit, Kindle remembers your place just like it does when reading a book. Overall, I'm glad I downloaded it. I just hope I get back to reading books again soon.

The dictionary contained in Thread Words must've been created by a bunch of monkeys on typewriters. There are dozens of words that are misspelled, illegal variations of correct spellings, and just plain nonsense words that cannot even be pronounced. Did anyone bother to run a spell check on this dictionary? Unfortunately there is no way to delete non-English words from this dictionary because of the proprietary nature of the .azw2 files used. This all makes the game, at some point, a guessing game and not one of vocabulary skill.

And what, pray tell, is the function of the SPECIAL words dictionary? It contains many legal but profane words.
