Great value here - can't think of anything else in this price range that offers this type of RAID support (0, 1, 5, 6, 10), port count (8) and PCI-E 2.0. I purchased this to upgrade a general-use server (Win2008) for a set of WD RE4 already on hand. 8-ports for sub-$200 - this thing is a bargain, and leaves lots of room for expansion. The negative reviews here raised no major concerns (common, general controller issues - easy to avoid). I'm not new to RAID, and this controller is based on existing product lines - no surprises, aside from RAID 6.

Installation

Standard and simple enough - physically install the card, boot the system and allow the card's BIOS to post and pass, then install the driver when prompted by Windows (on the included CD, though I recommend downloading the current driver and Web interface, which now has RAID 6 support). No setup utility is needed - Device Manager was able to easily locate the driver. Installing the Web Interface is simple -double click, confirm messages, done. The SGL model does not include cables, so you will need to supply your own - a good thing in this case as I needed an SFF-8087 to SATA for this particular configuration.

Thoughts

The card is affordable, stable, and importantly, predictable - RR'cards have been on the market for eons, and their strengths and weaknesses are well documented. SATA/SAS backwards-compatibility, and stupid-cheap RAID 6 are bonuses. Linux support is a big plus (many from this series are recognized natively and ready for Linux software RAID configurations if you don't want to deal with HighPoint's set-up).
The Web Interface is archaic, but it gets the job done and has a lot of administrative features (probably overkill for many configurations).

So, to start, this is what I'd call a semi-RAID controller or you may find fake-RAID or similar terms on the net when you search. What it means is that the card has a chip that interfaces with the drives (HDD or SSD) and provides the RAID options and handles the data transfer and interactions with the host OS, BUT it does not have an onboard CPU and uses the host CPU for RAID parity calculations. no wonder why it is sold under $200 for an 8-port card.
If you are good with this, then this may be a good option for you. I use the card in a pretty fast PC using an AMD Phenom II X6 CPU. So, the impact on my CPU is minimal. I use 8 Enterprise WD disks to create a RAID 5 array.

Now, here is a gotcha. the manual doesn't really cover the initialization process and the differences between the 'quick' vs. 'foreground' and 'background' modes. I am not really sure about the use case for the 'quick' mode and to prove it to myself, I created an array using the quick mode and sure enough it was available to me right away, but as expected, the performance of the array was horrible, taking me back to the 8" floppy drive days :)

So, do yourself a favor, once you have installed the card and connected all the cables and everything, boot up your system, let the BIOS pop up and make sure that it detects all of your drives, but don't go into the BIOS to configure the array here. Let the OS boot and when that is done, install the drivers (windows 7 in my case) and finally install the Web RAID management software. From there, login into the Web RAID Management interface and create your array, and select "foreground' initialization. Depending on the size of your array, it will take anywhere from a few hours to a day or may be longer to initialize the array. just leave your PC to finish the task.

I purchased this adapter to install four 2TB drives for use with a HYPER-V 2008 R2 server I'm running at home. It has performed adequately so far. The drives are configured as a RAID 5 array. I plan to add another four drives as a separate array in the future. Note that you must buy the special breakout cables for this adapter as it supports SAS and SATA. I like the breakout cables because they fasten to the card very securely (this has been a problem with SATA cables on other RocketRAID cards). This card is really small in size. This adapter is best used to host an array to store data on, perhaps install software on. I don't recommend this adapter to host a boot drive. For boot drives, you are best off using a stand-alone drive on a separate adapter or perhaps a mirrored volume on a separate adapter (preferably SSD drives).

The main negative issue I have with the adapter is that the BIOS setup is very incomplete. First of all, the adapter supports RAID 6, but this is not available in the BIOS setup. You have to install their Web GUI, and build the array from there. In my case, I'm using a separate stand alone SSD to run the O/S on, so this isn't a huge deal, but it could be for others if they wanted to build a RAID 6 array then use it to boot from. This can be worked around, but you need to be more than the average PC user to understand the process.

The other issue is that the BIOS setup only supports "no initialization" or "background initialization". This is ludicrous. No initialization is a worthless option, I'm not sure why it exists at all. Background initialization takes days on a large array, and assumming you're willing to wait that long, you can't even see the progress.
