Bradley Multriener is a twenty-one-year-old corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps on his second tour in Ramadi, Iraq, a place he knows well. Before joining the Marines, Brad came from the suburbs of Chicago and had a variety of experiences that gave him an understanding mind and a compassionate heart. In the confusion of battle, Brad is separated from his platoon and captured by a small band of war-hardened Iraqi fighters. Azooz, one of the fighters Brad's age, is the translator for the group. I loved reading this book

I loved reading this book. It's well-written and holds the attention, but for me the biggest draw comes from inside the author. There's something raw, and very touching permeating every word. It's a different look, from an unexpected perspective, at things every American should know more about than we do. Thank you for writing this, but more importantly, for publishing it.

Awakening

If you are looking for a book that will keep you awake at night and most likely make you cry, check out After We're Free by Vince Perritano. After We're Free definitely predicted the worldwide revolutions we see occurring now, and I hope it continues to do so! It has something for everyone: You'll feel like you're there with the main character, Bradley, out on battle, and in his struggle after being kidnapped. There are flashbacks to his civilian life and a romantic story line that kept me intrigued. And my personal favorite, you follow the spiritual awakening that Bradley goes through throughout the entire novel. All 3 of these story lines tie together so well to create a wonderful ending, awakening, and beginning. Check it out, it just might change your life.

Something for everyone

A multi-faceted narrative with as many angels perhaps as there are readers. At the core of the novel the author explores the nature of one young man's military experience, but perhaps more importantly is the character's inner-world divulged through fragments and flashbacks of civilian life before enlisting. The main character, Bradley, clearly has been in search of something larger for a long time, something more important than the trivialities common to him and everyone else he sees around him.

It is the myth of the hero's journey reinvented and revitalized, bringing to discussions certain ideas that have concerned mankind for at least as long as there appear these ubiquitous, perennial questions seeking either existential purpose or nihilistic existence, or seeking a resolution to the debate over ethical relativism or ethical law, and of course theological exegesis or heurmeneutical debate. Conscious of having explored these severely critical issues or not, though I'd wager that much of the big philosophical, theological, political, and social ideas were at the forefront of Perritano's seminal effort.

I particularly found parallels between the Bhagavad Gita and After We're Free. The warrior Arjuna prepares for battle, poised and ready with Krshna his charioteer, though in truth Krshna is a Hindu god. Quickly however, Arjuna realizes his oppenents are composed of his cousins, uncles, family of all kind, which raises a moral dilemma, thus initiating the text as a dialogue between Arjuna and Krshna over the morality of the conflict, seeking the truth to guide their actions by logical deduction and philosophic inquiry.

Similarly an Iraqi translator for the Iraqi group responsible for kidnapping the corporal, a young man named, Azooz, begins to realize the political commissars' propagandized portrait of the generic American soldier's character, ethics, and military intentions resonate poorly with his experiences with American Marines, particularly Bradley as well as other U.S. military personel who are nothing at all like they are depicted by Iraqi Generals.

Terrible tragedies ensue, creating nervous suspense for these character's Perritano has carefully and honestly brought to life, forcing the reader to genuinely empathize with their fears. By bringing the reader into Bradley's head and writing in a believable, realistic style, sharing the Colonel's candid, human reactions to perilous scenarios powerful enough to transport you into his more than precarious situation--an ability not accessable to many writers.

Perritano's real life experience certainly sets his account above those who've written war novels in comfortable abodes and in libraries, acquiring an ingenuine sense of realism and completely lacking authentic insight into those visceral moments only one who has looked it in the face, survived and gone on to share the experiences, emotions, tragedies and even triumphs and pride that young men experience couragously in combat. Essentially though, this novel could be told about the life and experences of a young man's journey in becoming a man without taking place in a war zone. The story's characters navigate the obstructions of war, they are altered by the war, and their traumatic experiences reshape them into something they were not at the outset. But Perritano's novel with its real life characters and literary realism could stand alone as a character study and still it would shock, entertain, intrigue, promote empathy, intensify curiosity and leave the reader fulfilled.

Nevertheless, with the turmoil and genocide in North African nations; war in Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Mexico; revolutions in Egypt, Iran, Libya; protests all over the globe; Iraqi exodus to Syria; and instability in the middle east in general, not to mention instability in Asia, police riots in Greece, the FARC and other guerilla units' violent agenda, which originated as a revolutionary movement to combat corporate exploitations and the department of agriculture's agreement to homogenize crops, thus destroying the variety of food sources for the locals who are forced to buy imported produce at highly inflated prices which used to be local crops.

After We're Free is a highly relavent novel, definitely worth the read, and even for the indifferent folks out there who are maybe pessimistic about change and would prefer to be entertained and not burdened by tragic accounts of innocent deaths, acts of genocide, socially repressive regimes with an agenda to censor evidence of government murder, the assassinations of foreign journalists and travelers, and other inhumane atrocities; Perritano's novel provides entertainment in that it is a coming of age story, a thriller and mystery, a bit of a romance storyline and much more even I probably didn't catch.

After we're free is a great book and touches you deep down, as it speaks of solidarity, love and fear. What made it even more special for me, reading it was that I met the author personally and got to spend some time with him and was able to chat about his experiences. I can only recommend the book as it presents a perspective on the war in Iraq from a different point of view!

A highly entertaining book, with a deep inner meaning. I truly enjoyed the journey Bradley took me on, and hope other readers get the same sense of peace this book gave me.
