Alpha Video is following the lead of other public domain distributors and has added watermarks to this movie. This is unacceptable to me. I pay for a theatrical movie and I don't want watermarkes in the film. I will not be purchasing 2009 Alpha products until the watermarks are discontinued. The video transfer of this film is very good, by the way. Who cares, the watermarks ruin the movie for me.

This is the first Movie that Leonard Sly starred in as Roy Rogers and rode Trigger. It is a must have for a RR fan and collector. It Premeried in my Hometown Dallas, Texas, 1939. They say Gene Autry did not show up for this, or possibly another, movie at Republic Pictures so Roy was promoted from a member of the Sons of The Pioneers and a bit actor to Star, to give Gene some competition. It didn't bother Gene much, he still made more pictures and recorded more songs that Roy. Obviously I am a fan of them both. Some say Gene was going into the army at this time and flying supply planes. Roy appeare in many of Gene's films previous to this movie.

For anyone who is serious fan of the old western. Never understood why these movies were called 'B' movies, when this was released in 1938, this was the movie people went to see, not a second best selection. These western stars was the reason for going to the movies, that is why people today still know who they are all over the world unlike so many of the so-called stars of today who are not known outside of their own little circles.

This rating applies to the Alpha DVD only, not the film.
The Alpha Video edition of UNDER WESTERN STARS (1938) appears to be uncut at 64 minutes and 48 seconds, but the picture quality is so bad it's hard to enjoy, and there is a large, annoying watermark in the upper right corner that pops up occasionally. In comparison, the Sinister Cinema DVD-R is derived from a better, sharper 16mm source and is also uncut. Roy Rogers fans will be much happier with the Sinister Cinema edition.

Under Western Stars, 1938 film

“Dust and Drouth Sweep Southwest” is the headline on ‘The Sageville Banner’. Rancher ask for US aid. Cattlemen fight for water. The water company calls the Sheriff for support. Roy stops two riders. Can they open a valve to release water? Yes. Can the Sheriff stop them? No. Roy is arrested. There is a song. They ride into town. The Mayor greets Roy, then fines him for trespassing. There is a political meeting. Who is the people’s friend? They vote to send Roy Rogers to Congress, he is a hero to the people. The water used to be free before the Water Company grabbed it. [No history here.] Roy sings a sentimental song. But he can’t campaign without money for advertising. Or can he? Roy wants the water rates cut by 75%.

Rogers will get Federal aid for the ranchers and farmers. Mr. Fairbanks offers Roy a deal if he drops out of the race. Congressman Scully will change his dress to appeal to the voters. A ringing bell causes Scully’s horse to bolt! Rogers is elected. He will need Congressman Marlowe’s help to pass his bill. Marlowe will be at a fox hunt Saturday. Roy and Frog show up. Roy is told how things work in Washington; he throws a party. Roy tells of the effects of the drought. Two children died for “dust pneumonia”; others lost all and moved away. A song tells about the conditions from a lack of rain. Rogers gets the support he asked for - if conditions are that bad. Fairbanks is opposed. But Rogers admits the photos were from another state. A telegram revealed this to the Congressman!

Their personal tour is interrupted, but the Congressman sees the dry conditions. Water is scarce. The wind creates a dust storm! They seek shelter. Then they learn how Roy planned these events (except the dust storm). The Water Bill will be approved.
