I have purchased 3 of these over the years so obviously I like them. They have never caused any problems and I have used both USB3 and ESATA ports.

The only problem I have had is that on the top of the lid there is an air vent with a fan underneath. Above the fan there is a square of plastic fabric acting as an air filter, which on a couple of them has tended to droop into the fan. This has never been bad enough to stop them working, just can make more noise than necesary. I have simply fixed that with a few drops on instant glue. I would give this 5 stars if it wasn't for this little niggle.

This enclosure is smaller than expected, which is nice. It includes everything you need so once you get it, you can plug it, as follows: DC power block, eSATA cable, USB 3.0 cable, vertical stand, and drive bay for stability and alignment with five screws. Remeber that NO disk drive is included!! It's easy to open, just press the tab on front and lift, then, to extract the bay, just lift one of the tabs inside, and pull the bay. Drive just plugs inside when you place it, once you screwed it in the bay and installed it. Drives use to have screw holes at the bottom, and of course, at sides, so screw your drive on all the available holes for max stability and best alignment so you won't have any issue during installation. No need for extra wires. Notice that it will work only with SATA drives!! Sata I and II are supported. You can use Sata III but speed will be like Sata II.
Once disk is installed, turn on this baby, and then, if you're using eSATA you may need to go to Computer Management, if Windows. This process needs to be done just the first time you use it, and no more. Just right click on My Computer, then choose Manage. On navigation tree, choose Disk Management. It should bring you a dialog for initializing the disk, choose yes, but be careful!! Any data on disk will be gone!! Now once initialized, look at all your drives, then find the new one that has no format. Right click then create new volume. A wizard will guide you through, then it's ready to use!! If you use USB, you don't have to initialize the disk, you're just ready to go!
You can adjust the cooling fan speed, so fan can be seamless, but it won't turn off at all. The activity LED is a bright blue LED. You can change it, but it will void any warranty.

I wanted to find an external enclosure to attach to my RT-N66U that I use as a "media hub" for my home capable of supporting HDDs over 2TB.

After making several mistakes along the way due to "inflated" information from several vendors ("Sure! It will support 2TB+ hard drives...but only ever see a max of 2TB...") I decided to try one last time on the METAS.

Man, is it PERFECT! E-SATA, USB 3.0, hot-swap capable, adjustable fan speed (and quiet to boot), and only one annoyingly bright light (easily covered with electrical tape) and recognized by my router's media server software.

This thing is, frankly, perfect. ESP. being hot-swap capable...it takes literally no more than 10 seconds to pull the drive and have it ready to be backed up onto my main rig.

Oh, and just to reiterate: I am running a 3TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm hard drive and, yes, all of it is available.

Stop reading: get this.

I have three of these, but don't you rush out to buy one just now -- they seem to have stopped making this model, and I probably want to get several more of the few that are left. When I have enough, I'll let you know you can try to find one.

After more than 2 years of use, I can reiterate that this is the best external HD case I've tried. In addition, I discovered that it handles a 4TB drive just fine (W7 64bit) despite the description saying it is limited to 3TB. All my fans are quiet. It may be relatively more expensive, but the quality justifies the cost. I would never use one of those fanless, drop-in units -- the only time I tried one, the drive became uncomfortably hot after half-an hour of use.

Its usb3 and all that its a tad cheaper made than the all aluminum models. Time will tell. sad thing if the simple interface boards dies, there are not replacement parts for it. Which is stupid because the case is still good. So while I have 6 of the Rosewill RX-358 V2, 1 has failed in less than 1.5 years. I only uses these lightly to backup pc data. 90% of the time they just sit there for insurance.

After only a couple months of usage the fan is already failing. It sounds like a shopping cart with a busted wheel. The main reason I got this thing was because of the fan it had -- I liked the idea of keeping the drive cool. So much for that idea.

I have several HD enclosures, most of them are a mixture of plastic and plastic and metal. This one is solid aluminum casing all the way through with for a HD enclosure an oversized fan to keep the unit cool. USB 3.0 is fast and the Esata connection works flawlessly. Overall I'd have to say this is the best enclosure I've ever owned.

Very easy to set up, no issues connecting drive. Has eSATA and USB3 connections in the back, fan is very quiet even at max setting & a good price. The mesh canopy on the top is a bit fragile, so be careful when opening to insert drive. Played some games installed on the external drive & it's faster, so I'm happy. Overall very good product.
