There are a few different types of DVI cables/adapters, this is a DVI-D adapter, NOT a DVI-I adapter. I feel this is importent to mention, as the product description only lists this as "DVI", and standard DVI cables are typically DVI-I.

The difference is that DVI-D adapters, like this one, lack the four analog pin holes that are found on DVI-I cables (found above and below the long, horizontal pin hole), and therefor are NOT compatible with DVI-I cables.

In other words, before you buy this, be sure to check that your DVI cable is DVI-D and not DVI-I. If you are confused as to which is which, just do a google image search to get some clarification.

Hope this helps.

Alright I've had 3 different 3rd party MiniDisplay to DVI adaptors for my Retina MacBook Pro, to hook up my not so great Acer Monitor. They were all terrible. A slight touch of the adaptor when it's plugged in and the monitor goes black for a moment. Sometimes needs to be jiggled for the image to come back. And when you're editing videos in Final Cut Pro, this can cause FCP to crash.

I was reluctant to spend the significantly more money on the genuine Apple adaptor, but eventually I was sick of the touchiness of the one I'd been using, so I poked around on Amazon and managed to find a new, still in the box Apple Adaptor being sold by someone for $10. Let me tell you, I can straight pick up my laptop and shake it and this adaptor doesn't budge from the Mini Display port. Go Apple or Go Bust. Look for a cheap (apple) one. So worth it. When it comes to Apple, the 3rd party knock offs just usually aren't worth the frustration!

I'm generally happy with the way this adapter works. I have a couple of Apple computers, and now use older second monitors with both of them. I downgraded it because, while the thumbscrews on Apple's 20" Cinema Display tightly connect it to the adapter, the thumbscrews on a LaCie monitor won't connect. When I tilted my iMac during calibration, the LaCie connection came apart.

When I got my new Macbook Pro, I loved it right away. My only disappointment was when I tried to connect it to my large monitor from an older PC using an HDMI cable. The quality of the picture was low and blurry so it was too annoying to use.

I bought this adapter and viola! Crystal clear picture, and works perfectly. Maybe my HDMI cable was just problematic, but now I have it working great. Love my MacBook!

Not sure what more a guy can say - it works. Just like it's supposed to. There are no awesome blue LEDs or ringtones that play in beat with your videos you're watching. But it does work as described. I will buy more, in fact I probably already have by the time you're reading this.

I cheaped out and bought an off-brand version of this adapter when mine went missing and while it worked for a few months, it eventually became a wiggle it till it works nightmare every morning when I got to work. I got a replacement and that one was even worse and was thinking my MacBook Pro's video card was going out. I was about to take it in when I tried someone else's adapter and it worked like a charm, so I bought the genuine Apple adapter and life was good :)

This adapter works perfectly and just exactly as advertised. I'm using it to connect my MacBook Air to an older PC monitor and I can't attest to the quality of the connection because the monitor isn't the best, but I got the extra screen space I needed.

This adapter is reasonably hard to find with Apple no longer producing it. Because of that, some folks want an outrageous amount so I jumped on this one when I found it. It came promptly, showed no visible wear or tear (not that that matters too much for something that spends its time hidden behind your computer) and works great.
