An Appointment with Mr. Yeats draws on 14 of Yeats' poems, spanning both famous and lesser known works, from the wry to the romantic, the political to the mythological, all invigorated with the energy and exuberance of The Waterboys. I had long ago given up on the Waterboys (pretty much after Fisherman's Blues, although Room to Roam had some great moments), and then to discover this new recording, this new union of music and poetry! Ah, delightful!

So far it's a consensus here among reviewers, this is a brilliant and satisfying work. My two cents is just to concur, right from the first notes you can tell you're in for something special; a dramatic, unapologetic and ennobling reading of W.B. Yeats, all to a lush musical accompaniment (a great cross between prog-rock and Irish folk/rock - with especially nice vocal help from Katie Kim). It captivates, and carries one away to that distant, yet ever so near, realm the great Irish poet so evocatively spoke of and from. I can't think of a better performer to do this than Mike Scott.

Perfectly wonderful. I was wavering between 4 or 5 stars until I realized that I was comparing this CD in my mind to "The Whole of the Moon" and "This Is the Sea"--other stuff by the Waterboys, in other words. That comparison might make "Mr. Yeats" 4 stars. However, compared to all the other more-popular dreck out there, this original, haunting, amazing release is easily 5 stars. In a strange way, it reminded me of "The Hazards of Love" by the Decemberists--so far out there, so far off the beaten track, that there's no way it should have come out as brilliant as it did. But it did.

For a while, I didn't even listen to anything past the first two songs. I was so captivated by the driving power of the "Shee" song and the intense beauty of "Wandering Aengus," I just kept repeating them over and over. I think I was also nervous that the rest of the CD would be a huge, disappointing lapse. However, I shouldn't have worried. Every song is distinctive and at least interesting in its own right. Every song has its own moments to wait for eagerly. For example, I was a bit thrown by the "Celtic blues" style of "The Lake Isle of Innisfree," but by the end of the song, the music and the lyrics fit together perfectly. "White Birds" made me wipe away tears; I'm a grown man, for crying out loud. (No pun intended.) The background (and sometimes foreground) female vocalist (Katie Kim?) I had never heard of, but wow, was she a bonus. The closing track will stay with you long after it is over.

In short, this is not a "novelty" CD, nor is it a self-indulgent foray into Mr. Scott's eccentricities. It is a bona fide, worthwhile, powerful Waterboys release; if you like them, you will like this.

The Waterboys (a la Mike Scott & co.) have created an absolute delight in their "Appointment With Mr. Yeats". Combining the verse and lyrics of Yeats, or at least often the inspiration of and by or the borrowing from, with a lively Irish folk rock that makes use of a variety of instruments (take a sampling of the instruments used on the wonderful song "Mad As the Mist and Snow" that builds to a delirious pitch: 12-string acoustic guitar; harmonium; fiddle; trombone; cabasa; Hammond; earth resonator; something called a "stun guitar") adds a lot of depth to this release. You're not going to catch nearly all of the nuances on your first few listens.

As a way of example I really expected to like this on my first listen having myself really fallen for the band's "Fisherman's Blues" album and I found myself actually underwhelmed by this release on first listen. But as I listened more this book of music and verse opened itself up and I found myself having a new favorite song with every other listen and I realized that this is a pleasure to listen to not just for the music but for the sung/spoken meters of the lyrics/words. There are a variety of moods that sift and shine throughout: consider the underlying melancholy and subdued beauty (thanks to those female chants) of "The Faery's Last Song"; the carnival march of the album opener "The Hosting of the Shee"; the romantic sway and elegance of "Sweet Dancer"; the building delirium of "Mad As the Mist and Snow"; the slow small wheel roll and crush of "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death"; or the more traditional rock with a fuzz fiddle beats of "September 1913".

Mike Scott is the main vocalist (though he does share, especially with some female counterpoint voices) and you can just tell as he sings and/or recites he's bending his mouth and bowing his tongue to put just the right emphases on words and trills on l's and r's at times. One of my favorite lyrical points on the album is his rendition of the "Song of Wandering Aengus" and the summation at poem's end: "the silver apples of the moon/ the golden apples of the sun" sung with such desire. Scott never quagmires any of the songs in straightforward rock style vocals. Even when he allows the lyrics to be more sung than spoken he is mindful of the metered melody of the words, of the lilts and lifts, and of the stresses and resonances. This gives the release an overall specific warmth, and it's a welcome rain of warm light filtering through the evaporating morning mists, that makes one want to walk, barefoot, upon a green carpeted earth climbing a slight knoll up toward the crest to sink in the sun's rise and relish.

With all of Scott's and The Waterboys' former releases (of which "Fisherman's Blues" and "This Is the Sea" have jockeyed for my favorite place) I find myself succumbing to an "Appointment With Mr. Yeats" as my favorite Waterboys release. I think that our keeper of the Big Music has found his full moon in march.
