I bought this book partly out of interest and partly because it related to a paper I was writing for grad school. It was reasonably interesting - scholarly rather than popular - but nothing to be bowled over by. Probably best for students researching a related topic rather than the casual reader.

Beauty Pays is an extraordinary book that tells the Ugly truth about looks. Better looks equal an easier time in the world no matter where you go. People generally like to be around beautiful people, which may be a reason why some with good looks have the nastiest attitudes. I do not think the world should cater to self identified beauty whether true or false. From an economic standpoint beauty and attractiveness are well explained and reiterated several times over. It is another form of discrimination, but it just doesn't have enough political muscle behind it to stand. Nice writing Mr. Hamermesh!!

Beauty Pays is an easy to read and yet scholarly book about the role and results of good looks in the world. It may not be palatable to know the prejudice that exists in our culture, but it is important to hear the truth.
