On April 4 1968, Martin Luther King was in Memphis supporting a workers' strike. By nightfall, army snipers were in position, military officers were on a nearby roof with cameras, and Lloyd Jowers had been paid to remove the gun after the fatal shot was fired. When the dust had settled, King had been hit and a clean-up operation was set in motion-James Earl Ray was framed, the crime scene was destroyed, and witnesses were killed. William Pepper, attorney and friend of King, has conducted a thirty-year investigation into his assassination. In 1999, Loyd Jowers and other co-conspirators were brought to trial in a civil action suit on behalf of the King family. Seventy witnesses set out the details of a conspiracy that involved J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI, Richard Helms and the CIA, the military, Memphis police, and organized crime. The jury took an hour to find for the King family. Accurate and earth shattering.
Another terrific book by William Pepper, extending his groundbreaking 1999 Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination Conspiracy trial victory. The jury came back in less than an hr with a unanimous decision King was killed by a "conspiracy of government agencies". If you like this book dig into the trial, it's the most amazing American history document I've read, rivals The Pentagon Papers, & highly readable. You can download it free from the King Center. Get all Pepper's books, he's an investigative lawyer of the highest caliber in morality, honesty and character. An Act of State is super book and a great place to start reframing your understanding of monstrous "imperialism and Racism" as King called it that hunted our greatest profit for years to take him down. It's Jan 2024, is it any wonder the US is actively culpable in the Palestinian genocide, the monstrous assassination of an entire culture?

    This book is a real eye opener and I am so thankful for William Pepper writing it. Confirmed information read in other books about the other executions done around that time. Read again about some of the same people who were involved with the Kennedy murders and their tie in with the mafia. What a sicking time that was to grow up in, but grow up I did. Well written and lots of time and interest and energy went into the uncovering of this book, by the author and it shows through when I read it. This was a book that needed writing. Some times when a lot of time has passed one is able to better understand and to see more clearly the situation and people involved in an a bygone era. Fell that we have learned more about our own country and government and am nowhere as naive about American government as I used to be. Still believe in the Constitution it is a shame more of our politicians do not.

    I think this is an extremely important book for everyone to read. I think that even if you end up not believing the authors point of view, it is still really important to consider the possibilities, especially in relation to other events that have occurred in this country since Martin Luther King's death.

    This book seeks to provide actual evidence where possible, and corroborating testimony where possible, rather than just theories and "maybes". Most people in this country will not have heard this additional information. Most people in this country will not have known that there was a civil trial. Of course, most people in this country don't even know who was accused of killing King.

    I disagree with some of the authors historical perspective on the swapping of religious power for economic over the ears of history, but I am no scholar, so that will just have to remain my opinion.

    This book is much more than a "conspiracy theory" text. It should be regarded as historically important information that should be provided to all citizens.

    What I liked about this book is the honesty which William Pepper wrote it. His purpose was tl get at the truth lf who and why Martin Luther King was assassinated. He did an awesome job telling this story. If anyone is really, really interested in this story - get this book, read it - make up your own mind as to it relevance to humanity, secrets "service" and " freedom of speech ." You be the judge. My opinion? Great read!

    This reviewer is an avowed conspiracy/cover-up supporter regarding the 1960s assassinations of JKK, RFK and Martin Luther King. He welcomed the opportunity to learn more of the MLK murder. Author Pepper's voice rings loud and clear: "James Earl Ray did not shoot Dr. King!" Unfortunately, in buttressing that statement, author Pepper over examines the evidence and overstates his case. Pepper tries to be thorough but succeeds only in being repetitive to the point of confusion. MLK's opposition to the Vietnam War and proposal of a Poor People's Campaign had angered too many powerful people who wanted him eliminated. It is totally unclear who those individuals might have been. Mysteriously one name that does emerge is that of New Orleans Mafia Boss Carlos Marcello, just as it also does, on the fringe of the JFK hit. The bottom line is that while Mr. Pepper may be a superior lawyer, he has failings as a writer of long and detailed prose. To his credit, Chapter 9 does attempt to marshal the supporting facts in one place-one ray of sunshine where more light is needed. An interesting sidebar to "An Act of State" is Pepper's unabashed skewering of Gerald Posner. GP is the Establishment's point guard in debunking any conspiracy theories, be they related to MLK or JFK. Pepper goes after Posner with a vengeance that can only emerge from the deepest sincerity. The final word here is that "An Act of State" is too important to NOT rate 5 stars. Potential readers are urged to focus on Pepper's efforts and not his results. Mainstream media (what a great term!) has ignored the MLK hit. We should be grateful that the William Peppers of the world have the intestinal fortitude to investigate and publicize periods of our history that many would just as soon ignore.

    I don't believe that the fella "Tom", who gave this work 1 star below, actually read the book. How does he explain away the presence and the testimony from both the Fire Captain who let in the Army sniper team to the fire station rooftop, and the report from one of the snipers himself that 2 teams were operating that day?

    It was proven in a US court of law that there was a conspiracy to execute Martin Luther King. The King family won a judgment from Lloyd Jowers, the only actual perp they could prove in court was part of that conspiracy. That a conspiracy existed was proven and is beyond reproach. That it was quickly forgotten by the mainstream media is as yet a mystery and unexplainable to me. 5 star work for content, however, 3 star for readability as you can tell that the writer is a lawyer: his facts and figures are jumbled and confused (much like a stream of consciousness) UNTIL he starts describing the court case, whereupon it becomes clearer and easier to read as he walks us through the testimony that arrives at the conclusion which Kings family knew from the start, which is the shocking yet proven idea that Ray was a patsy and that the US government had King murdered.
