I purchased this product with hesitation based on the many poor reviews of similar products that stated the clip was too tight/too loose/broke off/etc. My video card has an HDMI port and a displayport. I already had a monitor using the HDMI and my monitors don't have a displayport so I needed this little adapter. I haven't had any issues with this product so far. I've had it in the back of my desktop tower under my desk for a month now and it has been performing perfectly.

Still working without any issues. I've had to move my computer a few times since purchasing but I haven't had any issues.

Another move and still no issues. It feels solid so I really can't understand how people had a bad experience. They must have been yanking on the cord or something because it works fine for me.

Working great on a MacBook Pro Retina 15" (Mid 2015). Had to use SwitchResX to add a custom resolution to get 60Hz, because MacOS didn't give the option for 60Hz with my Sony 43X800D 4k TV. It only offered 30Hz by default. Once I added the 60Hz setting, this adapter is working great at 3840x2160@60Hz. Also, though the manufacturer says it may not work, Audio is working fine from my Mac through HDMI 2.0 to my TV. Additionally, I contacted support and they were VERY quick to reply and very helpful.

This device was exactly what I needed to connect my laptop to my TV. Just plugged it into my laptop, connected it to an HDMI cord, and plugged the HDMI into the TV . But, I just want to point out that this is NOT a USB to HDMI converter. I will post a picture of the port that it plugs into, because it does not connect to a USB port.

Works even with the HTC Vive

This review is for the 4K UHD version of this adapter. I tested this passive adapter from Cable Matters and an [[ASIN:B01CY2SXN2 active adapter from UGREEN]] with my graphics card (a [[ASIN:B01GLYD7MG GTX 1080]] with three DP ports, one HDMI port and one DVI port) and the following output devices:
- A virtual reality headset (the HTC Vive, with a resolution of 2160x1200 at 90 Hz).
- A 1920x1080 TV (the [[ASIN:B00I94ISS0 Samsung UN48H6350]]) - technically uses 120 Hz, no HDMI input above 60 Hz
- A 5.1 surround receiver (the [[ASIN:B00HZE2WW8 Yamaha RX-V377]])
- The TV with the receiver in between
- An old TFT display (the Samtron 94B with a resolution of 1280x1024) via an AmazonBasics HDMI to DVI adapter cable
There were no differences between using the HDMI port directly and using the passive adapter this review is for. Surround sound worked when connecting to the 5.1 receiver, regardless of whether the TV was on or not. I could also select 12 bpc instead 8 bpc in the graphics settings, regardless of whether the 5.1 receiver was in between or not.
When using the active UGREEN adapter, I could only get stereo sound to work with the 5.1 receiver, regardless of whether the TV was on or not. I was also not able to pick 12 bpc in the menu, regardless of whether the 5.1 receiver was in between or not. Note that the TV's panel probably only supports 8 bit, so this wasn't actually a loss in my case, but it might be in other cases.
Other than that, I didn't notice any differences. Both adapters handled all resolutions and refresh rates well, including the HTC Vive, which requires the most bandwidth (higher resolution and refresh rate than the TV). I did not notice a difference in image quality, or any kind of added lag.
The active UGREEN adapter is a lot bulkier (since it's an active adapter, it contains additional electronics) and a little longer than the passive Cable Matters adapter. It is also more expensive ($17.99 instead of $13.99 at the moment).
In summary: if a passive adapter works at all (the DisplayPort needs to have its own clock/RAMDAC, from what I'm reading - google "DP++"), it will probably work better, cost less and take up less space than an active adapter. If you absolutely do need an active adapter (for AMD's EyeFinity in some cases), the active UGREEN adapter seems to do the trick, though surround sound might not work, even though the description says otherwise ("Supports 8-channel LPCM and HBR audio up to 192kHz sample rate"). That is not a problem if you send the audio signal through other means, like the sound card.
I don't have any 4K capable devices, so I cannot comment on this adapter's 4K capability. Note however that both adapters only support 4K at 30 Hz. For 4K at 60 Hz you will need an adapter to HDMI 2, which is hard to find at the moment.
