The likable protagonist of this creditable first novel is Quint McCauley, a middle-aged ex-cop recently jilted by his 23-year-old lover. McCauley is head of security for Hauser's, a large Chicago department store. Preston Hauser, president of the store, has been receiving threatening letters, and asks McCauley to quietly investigate. At a meeting with McCauley in his office, Preston takes his daily vitamins--and dies: the capsules were laced with cyanide. McCauley tells Preston's wife, Diana, a fetching kleptomaniac, that she is a widow; she finds the news hilarious and tries to seduce him. McCauley resists; he has recently become roommates with Elaine Kluszewski. He and Elaine investigate the various Hauser's executives that Preston had suspected of writing the letters. Brod's settings and dialogue are realistic and believable, more than making up for a repetitive running gag on the difficulty of parking in Chicago. Despite the obvious flag or two pointing the way to the guilty doorstep, this hard-boiled first-in-a-series is solid, satisfying fare.

About the Author

D.C. (Deb) Brod has written fiction most of her life, but didn’t think she had a novel in her until after she graduated from Northern Illinois University with an MA in journalism. It was then that she decided if she could spend 120 pages discussing postal oppression of the radical press, she could write a novel. She was right. Her first novel, Murder in Store, featuring private detective Quint McCauley, appeared two years later in 1989. Four more novels in that series were followed by a contemporary Arthurian thriller,Heartstone. Her short stories have appeared in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine and several anthologies; two of these stories received Reader’s Choice Awards. She lives in St. Charles, Illinois, with her husband, Donald, and their two cats, Skye and Jura, who are possibly the world’s most aww-inspiring felines. Strong Characters, Fun Plotting, Layered Mystery

I read another book by this author (Getting Sassy) that I really enjoyed because it was so . . . well, different (in a very good way), so I was eager to read this one, as well. This book, while not "different" like Getty Sassy (you really have to read that one to know what I mean), is distinctively this author. There's something about the interior monologues and the knack she has for really fleshing out the main characters and leaving the lesser characters ever so slightly out of focus (like when you start getting too close to a Monet). This can be frustrating to some readers, but when it's done well, it's quite wonderful. Brod does it well.

One thing that rather surprised me about this novel was that the main character was a guy; I guess because of Getting Sassy, I expected Brod to do what most first-person novelists do and write all protagonists in the same (and her own) gender. So I kept waiting for the lead (Quint McCauley) to suddenly start fretting about his hair or something, but again, Brod impresses. The guy's pretty much a guy, much like any other guy written by any male writer . . . okay, so there's this one time he knows the particular fabric of a woman's dress, but . . . hey, some macho ex-cops turned security heads and pseudo-PI's are great with fabrics. It was a small thing, and I'm sure most people wouldn't even notice something so tiny.

Anyway, the novel itself is a mystery with all the "usual" things going on: someone solving the mystery, a sidekick, the foil, the red herring, the clues, etc. If you love that stuff (and I do), this is very well written and fun to read.

A good, classic style murder mystery, with relatable characters, a dash of romance and flirtation, and a handful of shady characters we love to hate. There are some chases and other violent actions, but there is not an excess of bloody description. Just enough to set the scene, and set up the danger. While it is now standard to try to pick one of the least likely characters to be the culprit, there were still enough possibilities right up to the end, keeping the reader on guard. Just a good, entertaining story to read for the entertainment value.

There were some formatting issues in the Kindle version. One of the most distracting ones was when a line would end before it reached the right side of the page, and then the next line was indented, as if it is a new paragraph. It throws the rhythm of the read off balance, and usually causes me to stop, and go back to re-read to make sense of it. I will blame the conversion to Kindle for this, and not hold it against the author, or the overall quality of the book.

A very decent whodunnit, a classic style story which reminded me of the old tv shows like "Matlock", "Murder, she wrote", "Father Downing", etc. A very likeable main character, extra characters were good too. The only reason I'm not giving it more than three stars is that I had a problem with the dialogues. I don't know whether I just had a faulty copy or something, but I got confused who was saying what when sentences said by two different people were standing side by side in the same paragraph. I'm used to the text starting at a new line when another character starts talking. Also, there were lots of periods missing, and even capitals here and there. Perhaps those last two remarks are just nitpicking, but the dialogue really bothered me.

Very nice little crime novel, well written and a pleasant read. Nothing that is over the top violent or graphic. Just a good old whodunnit with a main character who is sympathetic and yet totally low key. I enjoyed it, perhaps because the writer didn't need to creat any cheap thrills to keep my attention. It was sort of like a Jessica Fletcher except without the old lady, or B actors or cheesy scripts. Ok maybe Murder She Wrote is a bad example. I loved the simplicity of it. The only minor issue was that some of the formatting was slighty off, only the occasional sentence nothing majorly disruptive to the flow of the text.

I found this a very enjoyable read. It is very well-written, in an easy confident style, which reminded me very much of James Hadley Chase. The pace is fast and the plot very well constructed. The characters too are well-drawn. The book was first published in print in 1993 and it is owing to the wonder of digital publishing that readers can once again enjoy Brod's work. I give it 5 stars which are well deserved. I shall be looking for more books by this author.

I enjoyed this book very much, it was a pleasant surprise. It is written in a Raymond Chandler type style with lots of quips, smart remarks and seductive women. There are plenty of deaths but nothing too gory and our hero succeeds in his investigation despite being thwarted by everyone he investigates and attacked regularly by the bad guys.

Quint was an engaging main character with plenty of flaws but a naturally heroic nature hidden beneath the sarcastic exterior. He has the usual trouble with women but a naturally gallant way of dealing with them. The setting of a major department store is unusual.

A good and enjoyable read.
