Although it appears on the surface to tell the story objectively, this film skips over several important details and glosses over others. The Hawaiians, continue to suffer from the illegal overthrow in 1893. Very little has been done to make things right, while rich Americans continue to buy up their land and overrun everything in the name of tourism. The ending was particularly disingenuous.
It's ok. If you know nothing or very little about the history of Hawai'i then this can be a suitable explanation of some of the events in Hawaiian history. This is an older production - may be from the mid to late '80's and they tend to skim over the historical events rather than getting into any real depth or details surrounding those events. One thing I feel is very important to note is that in regards to what I feel is one of the most important events in Hawaiian history - the overthrow of the Hawaiian government - the only thing they say is that the government was overthrown and the American republic government was established in its place. Important details about that event such as the fact that at that time the Hawaiian government was recognized as being an independent, sovereign nation and that it was an illegal overthrow done by force with armed militia called the Committee of Safety were left out. There are a lot more details surrounding this event and others that I will not go into at this point in time because it is much too lengthy. If anyone is interested in that they should google search the overthrow of the Hawaiian government and also the "Apology Bill" which acknowledges an documents an apology to Native Hawaiians for the illegal overthrow of their Hawaiian government
