I've been shooting professionally for 25 years, and using card readers since the Nikon D1. Compact Flash cards and readers are becoming scarce, as SD is now more the norm. But pro bodies still have CF cards, including my D4. As my old one was only USB 2, i figured it was time for an upgrade. Tried another USB 3 card reader, and it failed after 2 months (pin bent in the CF card slot), so went in search again.There are varied reviews on this Lexar reader, but upon closer inspection, it seems there are at least 3 models of this reader (that all look the same externally). The one i got is model # LRW400CRBNA, with a 2015 date on the box. This 400 series i think is the latest at the time i am writing this. It is indeed USB 3, with a usb3 cord as well, that inputs into the back of the device. I like that it has an interchangable cord, and comes with one. So you can put a CF card and SD card and upload them both simultaneously. It is much easier to put in the CF card first, as it is on the bottom. It is VERY FAST at READING both cards. This of course, is dependent on your computer, usb ports, etc. But its the fastest reader i have ever used (other than other formats, such as the Sony XQD). It has a nice padded rubber bottom that grips relatively well and stays in place. Seems trivial, but its nice. As it only has 2 cards formats, it doesnt use a gazillion drive letters on your computer like some of those readers with 10 or more formats. If you only need SD and/or CF, this is the reader for you. I dont have or care for any of those other weird formats. Of course, you can just use a SD card adapter if you need to put in a MicroSD card. The device was recognized immediately on my two computers, with no need to download drivers or install software. WHEW, what a relief--No crappy proprietary software to put on my machines. It just works well. Reads cards from every camera ive put in it so far (Nikon D4, D7000, D300s, Fuji XT1, etc) with no glitches. Couldnt be happier to have something work well, with NO HASSLES. Fast, Compact, Inexpensive

I decided to try these after having a poor experience with the more expensive Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader (LRW300URBNA). These do not feature the SD card slot, but as a pro photographer shooting exclusively on dSLR bodies, I almost never have data on SD cards, anyway.

I have found these to be vastly superior to the Lexar product. There are no moving parts, no silly "collapsing" design, and no long cables to wrap and pack.

The lack of a flexible cable could be an issue for you if you need to run more than one at a time. On many computers the width of the device is likely to block your adjacent USB ports. I solved the problem by getting a 6" USB3 extension cable for a buck or so over at MonoPrice. (Amazon didn't offer anything even remotely close in price at the time, but perhaps this has changed?)

These are very light weight, so if you're looking for something that feels hefty in your hands, maybe this isn't the product for you. They seem to be strong and well constructed, but not substantial.

I recently ordered another of these to have more in my collection. The construction on them has improved even more. It feels slightly heavier and more solid than my first-gen units. The first-gen units also feel a teensy bit sloppy while pushing the card onto the pins, but this most recent unit inspires confidence.

It's a no flash, no gimmick card reader. Insert the card, and insert the reader to your computer. A blue light appears to let you know it's connected, and the transfer speed from the card to the computer is blisteringly fast. I shoot RAW, and typically have well over a hundred photos that I transfer each time I connect, but it never takes longer than a minute to transfer all of that data.

Excellent design for CF cards! UPDATED

I recently have been having problems (twice) with CF card readers. The problem is that they have developed bent pins which I have not been able to fix. This renders them useless. In examining the broken card readers, I noticed that both had a relatively short "tunnel" in which to slot the CF cards. As a result, the cards are not fully aligned with the pins as they meet. This "slop" allows the pins to be bent. This Pixelflash CF card reader has a much deeper slot, resulting in better alignment, and less chance of bending pins. It is a little bulky, as it is quite wide and may not fit a fully "loaded" USB hub. I bought a cheap USB extension cable to keep on hand. The Pixelflash card reader seems to work great and does fit just fine in my MacBook Pro and a 2008 Macbook Air with the flip-down USB port door. Like most external card readers, it does not work on my first generation iPad.

Update 6/21/13: The reader continues to work well, although the glue holding it together seems to have failed. I have added a heavy rubber band around the unit to keep it together....

Poor quality, worst CF reader I've tried

Product failed within 3 weeks, only used this two times before failed. The 1" USB cord pulled out of the card reader (See photo) Contacted seller and they did nothing to help. Product is extremely poor quality, they say "no bend pins", but what good are straight pins if they connecting USB cord fails.

The Only CF Card Reader I Would Buy is a No-Bend by PixelFlash

When you invent something like the compact flash card with one million tiny holes requiring one million tiny pins on a CF card reader to go into the tiny holes in order to make a connection, you can expect some of the tiny pins to bend over time rendering the card reader useless.

The solution to this annoying and expensive problem is to invent a better mousetrap or, in this case, a better CF reader. PixelFlash did it in a simple but elegant way. They designed a CF reader with a sleeve that 1) requires a card to be put into the reader in the proper orientation and most importantly, 2) forces the card to accept the correct pins in the proper holes by not allowing the card to move up, down, left, or right once in the sleeve. Could a solution be easier?

I own several PixelFlash No-Bend CF card readers, having over time upgraded them to the USB 3.0 standard. I have one near each computer. In brief, I would not consider owning another brand of CF card reader. Professionally, I rely on PixelFlash No-Bend CF readers and they have not failed me.

P.S. The USB-cabled version of the card reader is another way this reader stands out. It's another plus in the design of the reader.
