I was tired of waiting to download image files from my CF cards on a usb 2.0 connection. Just built a new PC with USB 3.0 so was eager to get a usb 3.0 card reader. I liked the form factor design of this unit. Elegantly simple design and it's 'rectangular' - so you can pick it up! (Getting tired of odd shaped product 'designs' that are neither beautiful nor functional. Don't you hate the sharply tapered Advil bottle caps that are A. impossible to pickup the bottle, and B. very difficult to squeeze and turn the cap.)

Seller is excellent. Product arrived days ahead of promised date. It came in a taped plastic bag inside a bubble wrap pouch - as advertised (OEM packaging). They could easily put the same bubble package inside a cardboard box and stick a shiny label on it and charge $20 more. No thanks! Besides, it's easily opened with a pair of scissors (don't you also hate those impossible to open blister packs!). Unit is just as pictured with a shiny top (it's black all around. Picture shown makes the top looks like some other color). Printed on the bottom side is a diagram showing which slot is for what type of card. The unit has a low profile so there's no room on the front face for labeling. Frankly, not having the labels on the face gives it a rather pleasing clean look.

It comes with a 2 foot length usb 3.0 cable. I connected the Micro B connector to the reader and plugged in the standard type A plug to the blue 3.0 port. (3.0 cable has twice # of wires as 2.0 so it's much thicker). Windows 7 instantly recognized it and installed the driver. There's a steady blue light on the left side when it's connected. In the Control Panel, it showed up as a 'USB Mass Storage Device'. I plugged in a CF card (card slides along the guide and snap into place securely and easily. Unlike my SanDisk ImageMate 12-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader SDDR-89-A15 that I always have to wiggle the card around, worrying that I may bend a pin, before it's snapped home.) I then opened Windows Explorer - drag and drop some files back and forth. The blue light blinks to indicate activities. I noticed the copy speed difference instantly. To see how fast, I did test copies from 3 different CF cards. (I'm mostly interested in 'read' speed as I don't normally copy files onto CF cards from the PC). The same folder (390 files 5.70 GB) is copied, timed on an Iphone and the average 'read' transfer rate is calculated (with no activities on the PC during the experiment).

Sandisk Extreme III CF (advertised 20 MB/s read): 19.2 MB/s
Sandisk Extreme IV CF (advertised 40 MB/s read): 37.0 MB/s
Sandisk Extreme Pro CF (advertised 90 MB/s write..."read is slower"): 59.3 MB/s (took 96 secs) [usb 2.0: 14.9 MB/s (took 6m23s)]

6 min. 23 sec on USB 2.0 down to 96 sec on this reader - Woohoo!

Unfortunately, the Micro B connector on my unit doesn't like to stay put (the weight of the 3.0 cable is enough to pull it off). I sent an email to the seller via Amazon. They promptly replied with an RMA # for me to return the cable. In a few days, I received a replacement that worked perfectly (and connected securely). Kudos to the seller for their good customer service.

Please note I use (and tested) just the CF slot. I don't use other formats and have not tried them.

In summary, the unit works as expected (nice and fast), looks good and at a fair price. Except for the connector problem (for this it lost 1 star...otherwise I would have given it 5 stars for sure). But the seller stood behind what it sells and made good promptly. For that I give them 1 star... for a total of 5 stars. I would buy from these guys again.

After one year..."kaput"

I purchased this multi-card reader from Amazon 13 months ago and have used it...maybe 12-15 times. It worked just fine (i.e. fast transfer, good connection, etc.) until about a month ago, when the connection with the PC suddenly got very spotty, like in-and-out every couple seconds. I was obviously unable to transfer any data. I did some troubleshooting, and discovered the USB cord (the original and a couple other cords I had) was fine. It is the device itself that has a faulty USB female connector or electronic chip. As with all my electronic hardware, I always handled it carefully, so this was certainly not the result of mishandling. This was clearly a manufacturing defect. Perhaps that explains why this device is no longer available (as of the date of this writing) through Amazon. Despite the preponderance of positive reviews, I would not recommend it for this reason. I intend to replace it, but with another (more reliable) brand.

Easy to use and priced right!

I asked my son, the resident techie, to recommend the right reader for my situation and this is the one he chose. I'm sure he could have found a cheaper one, but, I know his preference is to always choose the latest and greatest.

When the reader arrived, he transferred all of my files over to my computer and showed me how to use it. Now I do it myself and it's quick and easy.

I really appreciate the ease of use and the reasonable price point.

Super Fast Multi-Reader, I love it!

This multi-reader is fast, fast, fast and it works like it should. My old Transcend ts-rdp8k reader was a lot slower and sort of flimsy, the card slots felt loose after using them for a while, and two of the pins on the CF slot bent.

This is not the case with the new reader, my CF cards plug in firmly and I'm glad that it's a 3.0 USB product because of its speediness. The cable extension is a nice length, I highly recommend this reader to camera junkies.

works but poor presentation

Purchased PixelFlash USB 3.0 card reader from Spotlight Media and received the device just in a bubble wrap and plastic sleeve - which didn't look promising. It worked fine in Win 7, no extra drivers needed, and I got 26MB/s read out of my Sandisk Ultra rated to 30MB/s (fastest card I have) so that's good. The activity LED light does not work on mine, but maybe that's a good thing for some.
