From Publishers Weekly

If baking is a science, Wilson has compiled something akin to the periodic chart for chocolate cookies. Although the author of A Baker’s Field Guide to Christmas Cookies has, for the most part, set this book up as a typical cookbook, with explanations of techniques up front and recipes in the back, the work does examine the chocolate chip cookie oeuvre in much the same way that a scientist scrutinizes elements and compounds. Wilson uses symbols to explain whether or not a particular cookie dough freezes well or if the finished products are sturdy enough to mail. She includes field notes that reveal tidbits on a cookie’s origin and possible variations on the recipe. And she gives information on each cookie’s "lifespan," ranging from four days (Chewy Brownie Chip Drops) to one month (Cappuccino Chocolate Chip Biscotti Dunkers). Yes, it’s a gimmick, and in the end, this is really just a compendium of solid recipes. But bakers interested in expanding their chocolate chip cookie repertoire will find plenty of inspiration here, with recipes for creations ranging from Double Chip Browned-Butter Oat Scotchies to Milk Chocolate Chip Banana Streusel Cookies. Four-color photos throughout.

The recipes in this book are amazing, and the introduction is very helpful and informative. She tells you flat out to use good quality ingredients, and not to use no/low-fat ingredients - these are meant to be savored and enjoyed. While I like to cook healthy, if you're going to eat a cookie, you might as well make it worth the splurge - just be sure not to eat too many (if you can!). She gives tips with each recipe, that are truly helpful, and even gives suggestions how to give a little variation to the recipe. I am determined to try most of these recipes, but have tried only about 7 so far. Out of those, only 1 didn't work out for me (the malted milk ball cookies), but I overcooked them so it was my fault. The buttermilk choc. chip brownies have become the requested dessert for my father and sister's birthdays (though I have to leave out the pecans since they're both allergic). The butterfinger brownies, caramel surprise cups (amazing out of the oven or warmed in the microwave), and pb cup cookies never last if my brothers find them, and my mom and I also love the chocolate chocolate chip shortbread cookies. The Holy Smokes Cranberry cookies are also amazing! ( I was also surprised to find out in her notes that they are served at a restaurant less than an hour from my parents house). To sum it all up, if you love cookies and chocolate, this book will not disappoint. These recipes run the gamut from the classic toll house cookies to white chocolate chip lemon pucker cookies all the way to cognac apricot rugelach w/mini chips - you're bound to find something different and special for everyone you know.

I love spiral bound cookbooks and this one lies flat when opened...also I know the story behind the original choc chip cookie & worked at a baking school/retail where they perfected an oatmeal choc chip cookie (proclaimed the recipe of the year in 2015). It's the ultimate cookie, whether you follow a traditional recipe or stray to adventure. I love the mentions of what can be frozen, done ahead, how to shape, kid-making friendly, explanation of choc & techniques, substitutions, etc. Photos are great for every recipe. The only down side is that I abhor buying a large bottle of booze for a few drops in a recipe...I've found the liquor doesn't excite the cookies; you can skip that, just my opinion. Otherwise, well done. THANK YOU!

This is an awesome cookbook. The first think that I love about it is that it has pictures for each of the recipes. The second thing I love about it is that it is spiral so that it will sit in a book holder or lay flat on the counter to read the recipes. The next thing is that there are no super difficult recipes in the book, it's all beginner friendly. And the last thing, the recipes are awesome. I have had the Chocolate Chocolate Chip Shortbread cookie which was AWSOME!! I would recommend this to anyone, novice to the expert. Great book!!

Wonderful and unique chocolate chip cookie recipes. I love that the book is spiral bound and can lie flat on the counter when in use. The pages are laminated so no worry about splatters in the kitchen. I gave one of these cookbooks as a bridal shower gift along with a cookie jar, and it was a big hit.

I thought it would be fun to change up the chocolate chip cookie, but I realize that the original is the best!

I had bought this book as a gift for my daughter, and hinted around until my husband bought it for me. In addition to the extensive number of creative recipes, the "Field Guide" includes hints and annotated notes about each recipe. Most cookbooks do not do this.
It's fun to peruse and use.
