The original battery in my Thinkpad T61 was a Lenovo 40Y6797 9-Cell (Design capacity: 84.24 Wh). I've replaced it a few times with the real Lenovo battery. With the latest battery being old and only lasting about 20 min or less when unplugged, it was time to search for a replacement.

Most real Lenovo batteries are over $100, many around the $150 and up range. That is too expensive to spend on my OLD (about 7 or 8 years old) Thinkpad. After market batteries are much more reasonably priced for a laptop so old. Having been happy with Anker products I've used in the past (purchased via Amazon), I decided to try this one.

Out of the box, the utility on the Thinkpad tells me the Anker has a Design Capacity of 71.28WH (as advertised), however its Full Charge capacity reported 69Wh. This wasn't enough to return it for replacement, but did concern me because out of the box each of the Lenovo's have had their designed and full charge capacities match.

Here I am about 2.5 weeks later, the battery shows 10 for the cycle count and the Full Charge Capacity is down to 66.45Wh. That is a rate of 3.7% drop in 2.5weeks, If this continues, the battery is going to diminish quickly and not even have a useful life of a year.

I'm Very disappointed.

EDIT: Oh, and I've seen people report the cells are Sony... mine reports Sanyo

EDIT2: The full charge capacity has dropped further to 62.73Wh. Thankfully Anker support contacted me directly last week (likely due to reading this review because I didn't reach out to them). After asking me for some additional information, they have arranged a new battery to be sent to me. Once I receive and get a chance to test it, I'll post an update. For now, I'm giving the rating one more star due to their proactive customer service.

EDIT3: The replacement battery arrived a while ago (also reports Sanyo cells), but I didn't get to update my review due to the holidays, family, etc.. Out of the box, the replacement showed Design Capacity of 71.28WH (as advertised), with a Full Charge Capacity of 68.72WH. And it performs as expected, with one minor exception: The settings of my Thinkpad power app are set to warn me at 10% battery remaining, and hibernate at 5%. While I get the 10% warning, at 7% the laptop just shuts off. It does not shut windows down properly, suspend, hibernate, etc. Just cuts power. With real Lenovo batteries, if I disable hibernate, I could run to 1% before they went to SLEEP/Suspend.

After using it a few weeks now, and a cycle count of 14, its reporting Full Charge Capacity of 70.00WH and has been stable. It continues to provide me with anywhere from 2 to 2.5hrs run time on Max Performance settings. and just over 2.5 on Power Source Optimized.

Because of the customer service and performance of the replacement battery, I've added a star, taking it to 4 stars. If it didn't power OFF at 7%, I'd give them 5 stars.

Technical information about the battery (cells are made by Sony)

I just got this battery today. It seems to work okay for now, so I can't review how it has lasted over time. So disregard my 4-star rating for now, we'll see how it does two years later.
My last battery was the 9-cell battery from Lenovo, and it had degraded to 17% of its original capacity (about 30 minutes of power) within two years, so I decided to try an off-brand battery instead. The full capacity of this battery is smaller than Lenovo's 9-cell battery.

When inserting it into the laptop (a Thinkpad T60 widescreen), it did not fit perfectly, I had to push it in more to get it to snap into place. Then the bottom of the battery stuck out slightly. Lenovo's battery had no issues fitting into the laptop. I also had to reboot my computer before it recognized the capacity and other details of the new battery, otherwise it would display that it was 317% charged or some nonsense like that. After rebooting, it reported its information correctly.
I have not seen any warnings about the battery being non-genuine or anything like that, but I also don't have any of Lenovo's software installed on my laptop.

Here are the technical details as reported by RMClock of a fresh battery:

My previous battery (from Lenovo) was different. It had cells made by Sanyo instead of Sony. When it was fresh, it had a significantly higher "fully-charged capacity" than its "designed capacity" for a few weeks, whereas this battery has the same numbers for both "fully-charged capacity" and "designed capacity".

Edit: This one took 1 year and 9 months to degrade to 27% capacity. This loss of capacity was not gradual over time, it happened abruptly one day. All laptop batteries degrade after a while, this one is no different.

This is the second battery in one year. I thought maybe it was junk since the original lasted 6 years, and most replacement parts for computer hardware is gyp-junk. But on this new battery I decided to read the fold-out instruction sheet that came in the beautiful packaging, along with a customer service hotline insert. Directions say the battery comes charged, so I should empty it down to 7% before charging the first time to get the max life from it. Then repeat that deep discharge 2 more times alternating with a full charge. I didn't follow those directions on the first replacement battery, and worse than that I had my charge management app set to "always fully charge" which never let it discharge below 96% and that killed the battery in one year. I changed my charge management settings to "Optimize for Battery lifespan" which allows it to discharge as needed to stay healthy as possible. During the initial break-in charging I am using a custom setting to discharge below 8% before charging to 100% where it stops charging. After that is done 2 times, then I will do a battery guage reset procedure so the computer knows the true capacity of the new battery. Hopefully this one will last a good long time like the OEM battery did.
