The Channel 4 crime drama DECEIT retells the story of the shocking police attempt to stitch up Colin Stagg for the murder of Rachel Nickell, using an undercover police officer using the name "Lizzie James".

There was just one problem: Colin Stagg was innocent. The police didn't know this, but they knew that the evidence against him was tenuous at best. So they used a police woman - "JC" - to honey trap Colin Stagg, using the name codename "Lizzie James".

But who was the real JC? And how did she go about ensnaring Colin in her web of DECEIT? The TV series provides SOME of the answers to these questions - going as far as they dare. But this book blows the lid off the police campaign of deception, the psychologist who interpreted the evidence selectively, and the policewoman herself who changed her testimony at the committal hearing.

And when the case against Stagg collapsed in court, the police took advantage of their cozy relationship with the tabloids to give the impression that they had the right man, but that the system let them down. And while the police were doing that, the real killer went on to kill another woman and a child...

A very good and well researched book, which complements the TV series. Except that I would have liked more on the Police, and in particular Lizzie James's, reaction to the Napper arrest and conviction. I accept that this may have been difficult to obtain. But, as with the Night Stalker, this was another example of the Police getting it very wrong and opening the way to more attacks.

I was only a teenager when the horrific murder of Rachel Nickell (RIP) occurred.
I never really followed the story until now & really glad I read this book as it shows how bad out justice system can be at times.
It’s sad how far people will go to get a criminal result, regardless of whether someone is innocent or guilty.

I do recommend it.

this was good ,about a man the police are sure is the culprit with no evidence but beccause he fitted the profile ,they were convinced it was him ,also he was on wimbledon common near the time wjhen rachel got murdered, the police tried their best to send him to jail for a murder he didnt commit but after years of harassment ,they found it wasnt him ,but the damage was done by then ,really good

I read another book about the Wimbledon common murder many years ago and when I finished it I was not fully convinced that Colin Stagg was innocent even though he was released by the Police. Having read this book I cannot believe the lengths the Police went to in order to coax Stagg into confessing to a murder he had not committed. The profiler Britton, whom the investigating officers came to rely on and involve in all aspects of the enquiry should never be allowed to practice again. The letters he prepared for the undercover Policewoman throughout the long, drawn out undercover operation, were despicable. An exceptionally good read

The book is very one sided, and whilst the book is about 1 mans unfortunate case the author allows himself to become too embroiled with his own opinion.

Also simple mistakes such as lines of text which make no sense and have to be 're-arranged mentally hold you up in the reading.
At the dame time the author also uses made up words.
The author does create an interesting read and the book can't be slated for the story, however it can also be very difficult to follow.

I read this account of an innocent man, and could barely believe what I was reading, what did he do to deserve this treatment? take his dog for a walk on Wimbledon Common on the day poor Rachel was murdered, that is all he did full stop!!!!

How he didn't have a nervous breakdown I will never know, what gives the police the right to villify this man just because he was on the Common?? ... Unbelievable, and the woman who set the honey trap doesn't deserve to be called a member of the police force, she should be ashamed of herself for the rest of her life!!
