A wonderful novel.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2023I read this book years ago and at that time I thought it was a good novel. Since then, I have read and researched the battle of Gettysburg in depth and upon reading this book a second time I found it more interesting and entertaining. The writing is superb, and it flows very smoothly in the telling of the true historical aspects of the battle. The historical facts I do not dispute. However, the author spent too much time on character development and not enough detail about the actual battle itself. Yes, he covers the attack into the wheatfield, peach orchard, devils’ den, and little round top and of course, Pickett’s charge. Although the author states up front that he condensed some of the events, he could have spent a few pages on the battle at Culps hill – an extremely critical fight at an extremely critical point in the overall campaign. More on character development. In the forward section of the book, the author devotes a paragraph or a page to each character. Yet of the twenty-three chapters, Lawrence Chamberlain has seven chapters devoted to his character/thoughts and actions, Longstreet has six, Lee has four, Buford has three; and Fremantle (British officer/observer) and “Lo” Armistead have one chapter each. Although the above characters except Fremantle played key roles in the battle, the author does not devote any chapters to Generals Meade, Hancock, or Stuart. Meade and Handcock played very key roles in the Gettysburg campaign. Gen. Stuart barely receives a paragraph scattered throughout the book and he of all the people needed further exploration regarding his absence at key times during the march and the campaign itself. If you are looking for a good starting place to learn about the entire Civil War or just the Gettysburg battle, I would suggest Shelby Foote’s Civil War Trilogy – a historical narrative of Civil War Volume II. He devotes time and detail into this monumental battle. Or other books about the Gettysburg campaign. There are so many books to choose from. There is information about Gettysburg done by the American Battlefield Trust found on You Tube. I am not saying do not read Killer Angels. It is an entertaining novel, but it is not a good primer for the reader new to the Civil War or the battle of Gettysburg. So, I would suggest exploring this topic on Amazon and finding books that might interest you in this battle. Then read Killer Angels for its entertainment value.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2023To date, Killer Angels, a historical fiction book, has been my favorite book that I have read.
It is the book that draws you in. In the thoughts and feelings of the gray and blue officers engaged in combat at Gettysburg in 1863 It truly is incredible.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2020Years ago, I (basically) knew nothing about the US Civil War, didn't care about the Civil War, and had no desire to know anything about the Civil War. Long story but my husband was teaching a military strategy course and asked me to read it to him aloud on a long road trip as a review for him. I agreed. By about page 50, I was totally engrossed and by the end, it had kindled a real "sense" of it. Now, I'm still fairly ignorant but I am interested! I keep learning. I went on to the prequels/sequel written by Michael Shaara's son, Jeff. Um, Jeff did not inherit his father's gift for writing. He tries to imitate his father's style and he gets you through the material. They're worth reading; just don't expect the same level of writing. [And if you didn't know, this is the book that the movie "Gettysburg" is based on.]
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2013This is the best dramatization of history I have ever read. I read it when it was first published in the 70's. I bought this copy to give to a friend who expressed interest in Gettysburg, the 150th Anniversary of which occurred beginning July 1, 2013. This book relies on letters and memoirs written by the people who took part to make a fluid, conversational account of the events. The 1993 movie Gettysburg is very true to the book and both recreate the scene vividly. Whichever is the medium by which you wish to learn about the biggest battle ever on American soil, and the battle in which America sustained more casualties than any combination of large battles anywhere in our history, these are the sources to fascinate and learn from. This battle really did decide the fate of our nation and whether, as Lincoln said in his Address 5 months later, this nation could endure. Had Lee won, we very well may have had two countries on our part of North America, rather than our United States as we have it. I went there in July for the anniversary; I dressed in period as a sign of respect for the sacrifices made by both sides to be true to their beliefs..
