PROS:
- Great value for the price. The amount of time spent NOT running our heaters (about 800 watts on the low setting) almost certainly resulted in much lower bills.
- Bright, warm light color is especially good for those cold, gray, overcast months.
- Much easier to manage (and less of a fire hazard) than our space heater. Also less likely to trip the breaker and the exterior of the bulb (outside of the front-facing light) never gets that hot.
CONS:
- It uses around 70% more electricity than an equivalent LED so definitely swap to a different bulb when you can just put a jacket on.
- Take note of the sizing -- the bulb is larger and more unwieldy than I expected -- which is also part of why I broke it about 4 months into using.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- Ideal in open spaces that are hard to provide heat (basements and garages) or where you need specific heat for short periods.
- Put the bulb on some kind of timer or remote on/off switch so that it doesn't run 24/7. You lose much of the value versus other heaters if it's running continuously e.g. a space heater that's only on 10 mins per hour.
- Look for a sturdy and strong lamp or housing, ideally something you can point in different directions. Or at least something with a protective guard in front.
UPDATE: IT works perfectly fine, and works through-out Guinea keets entire brooding period (6 weeks) It is excellent and so warm. There is couple of times when my wooden lamp stand fell down onto floor crashing, this lamp endures. :) Would buy again.
I pulled it out in 2018 to warm up / heat our conyure tropical bird that has his cage in the garage. It has worked well. In fairness I should add that
the garage never goes below 45 degrees as we have our garage ceiling insulated. ( but not the walls.) I tried a space heater but the heater kept kicking back to OFF. The point is it worked, and I think that this is a lot cheaper way to go than running a 1500w variable capacity space heater.
It heats the bird. He directly feels the heat and appears happy. I feel good about running it... 24 hours as it is not a big draw on electric and he can trust it is always on and can move according to his need in the comfort level. BTW This bird is over 23 years old. In bird years... yeah. He is picky...
This was a brand new bulb for my eight new chicks. What I loved about it is that it put out a nice amount of heat, very similar to the three other heat lamps I've used in the past, but that the red glow is a bit darker than the others I'd used. I really would like no visible light, so that the chicks can sleep in darkness, but all the heat lamps give off some light. So I was happy to find this one that at least isn't quite as bright.
However, it only lasted 500 hours of continuous light, not 5,000 as advertised. The chicks were three weeks old yesterday, and the heat lamp died some time in the middle of last night. When I checked on them this morning, the lamp was dead, and the thermometer in the brooder read about 68*F. Luckily the chicks were all still alive and seemed to be fine, so maybe it hadn't been out very long (they're supposed to be kept around 80*F at this age).
Maybe none of the heat lamps last longer than this - I don't know how many hours the others lasted because they weren't on continuously, and I wasn't keeping track. I know this one's hours because it's been exactly three weeks and I've only turned it off for 1/2 hour at a time or so a handful of times on warmer days. Twenty-one days times 24 hrs in a day is 504 hours.
Too bad, I really liked it!
Whether you want it for yourself or a pet or something, that's what you want to be aware of. This bulb won't trip your breakers or run up your bill like a space heater might, but it provides short-range comfort, and any nearby surface it shines on will slowly heat up noticeably, too.
