Yet Another Proprietary Sony Product - Yet I Don't Really Have a Choice

If you own a Vita (or Playstation TV) you'll already know what this is, so there isn't much more to say in that department. The memory card fits my Vita perfectly, it can store a lot of content, and it disappears in the Vita so you'll forget it even exists. I have only filled a fraction of my card thus far but will likely continue to download games as part of my Playstation Plus subscription so time will tell if I need to upgrade.

What is frustrating about this card, and why I can only give this card three out of five stars, is that there is no reason Sony had to develop yet another proprietary memory format. They could have used a regular micro SD slot and we would have been able to buy cards for about one sixth of what we pay for these. I'd like to think that Sony would learn their lesson about proprietary technologies after VHS won the war against their Betamax, after their Minidisc never managed to overtake CDs, or how their MemorySticks are a distant memory while SD Cards and MicroSD Cards continue to live on.... but apparently Sony has determined it is in their best interests to develop new formats for random products just to eek out a few more bucks from their loyal consumers while wondering why so many former Sony fanboys have moved on to the competitors.

Therefore although the card works well, there really isn't anything special about it and as such this can not be considered a good value. I was somewhat stuck since the internal memory in the Vita wasn't enough to download a single game - thus a captive customer is forced to pay the Sony tax and buy an overpriced memory card. However I'm not about to forget the next time I'm shopping for a TV or Stereo... so perhaps Sony needs to think longer term the next time they feel the need to "improve" the market by offering proprietary technologies.

Fits a TON of games

I don't really need 64gigs, although it would be nice to have, they're super expensive now. I bought this for around 50 dollars.

On this memory card, i have:
Call of Duty black ops declassified
Minecraft vita
Borderlands 2
Assassins Creed liberation
Dead or alive 5 plus
Metal gear solid 2
Samurai warriors chronicles 3
Katamari
Proteus
Titan Souls

12 ps1 games including some big ones like:
Legend of Dragoon
Final Fantasy 7
Sim City
Jet Moto 2
3 Megaman games
And a TON of indie games

In total I have 28 games! and i still have room for 5 movies (around 850mb each) plus a whole collection of photos. Trust me, its enough space unless you're the kind of gamer that needs a hardcore variety. I'm even planning on deleting some games so if i need to make room for more, its no problem at all.

Format: Video GameVerified Purchase

Yes you can jailbreak your PlayStation Vita and use SD cards in the game card slot with an adapter. You can also copy every game ever made off of the internet via unscrupulous sources , run homebrews and emulators for past consoles and so on.
The one thing you can't do is get a third party memory card, do the patent licensing rights that Sony owns.
So you may ask "Why do I need a Sony PS Vita memory card if I can just jailbreak the system and use the game card slot and an SD card adapter?"
Good question. I suppose the only answer I can give you is you can't use PlayStation Vita game cards you're using the game cartridge slot for a memory card adapter, and on Series 1000 models there is no internal storage space for game saves.
Again none of this matters if you putting all your games on to memory card adapter, for your own personal use, but like all things video game collectible related, real video game collectors likes to have the original physical hardware and game media in their original format, not emulators or ROMs running on modded consoles.
For the simple reason of resale and/or collector value, it's good to have a few physical copies of the games and a good sized memory card, that is if you're on game collecting.
I guess that's what it comes to for me at least. Sure, many of my old consoles and handhelds have everdrives, software mods, and hard drive upgrades, but I still have shelves of original copies of the games for my Genesis, Nintendo, 3DO, Xbox, PlayStation etc.
I'm not telling you how you should collect video games, you do it the way you want. Regardless, this is an accessory you may want as a collector, as I shall explain below.
Sadly, due to the proprietary nature of the PlayStation Vita memory card, prices have never come down. What you're buying currently (2019) is New Old Stock or used/refurbished. And since no one can make an aftermarket card due to patent laws, you're stuck with the limited run of what Sony themselves produced during the PlayStation Vita's lifespan.
Which makes the stupid memory cards more collectible than many of the games that came out for the system! Just like anything with limited stock, as supply runs out, the price goes through the roof.
In North America we were limited to the 32GB memory card. In Asia, they released a 64GB memory card. I recommend you stick to the 16GB and 32GB cards as they have decent capacity and are quite durable. Anything below 16GB is useless and the 64GB memory cards have a high failure rate. Also the smaller cards below 16GB capacity are quite common, as it was what most people bought back when the Vita came out.
Probably the biggest mistake Sony made with the Vita was the memory card. With it's small capacity and first party price gouging, the memory card, for many of us, was the reason why we skipped the Vita. It's hard to sell physical copies of games when they all require some space on an overpriced memory card. It's impossible to sell digital games in the PlayStation Store to someone when they don't have the space to put them on their system. The console sale alone doesn't turn a profit, game sales do, and lifetime Vita game sale numbers in North America were terrible. The PS Vita is the one game console in history that actually deserves a second chance, as it was a great system and there were hudreds of great games either left in Japan or overlooked here in America.

Verified Purchase

The memory card works, but it was not brand new. When I plugged the memory card in, it said that it was linked to a previous PSN account and needed to be formatted. The package is an original memory card package, but it's obvious that it was put into that package and resealed to look "new". Happy that it works, disappointed that it's not 100% as described.
