I became a vegan two months ago, mainly because the reality of my wife's father getting a five bypass surgery made a strong impression on me.
I am 63 years old, 5'8" tall and weighed over 220 pounds. I knew that this bypass surgery was very likely in my future also, at the rate I was going, and I was already starting to get some suspicious pains and easily became out of breath.
I happened to be browsing on Amazon for movies, when I noticed Amazon's website suggesting Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's book, "Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease", and I purchased it right away, and read it within a few days. The book really opened my eyes to the great health benefits of being a vegan and since making the decision to become vegan, I have lost over 23 pounds and feel wonderful, while eating as much as I want and never being hungry. I've even had to quit drinking coffee, because I now have so much energy in the morning that coffee was giving me way too much of a buzz.
I read Dr. T. Colin Campbell's book, "The China Study", which was truly amazing, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman's book "Eating To Live", which really made me much more nutritionally conscious. I identify with the "nutritarian" motivation for selecting nutritionally dense foods that Dr. Fuhrman describes. I don't want to eat anything that is not healthy and rich in micronutrients. Part of enjoying food is knowing it is doing wonderful things for your body.
So I went on a complete whole food - plant based life plan strictly for health reasons. The slaughter of animals wasn't even in the back of my mind, although after being vegan for a while, I naturally started seeing animals differently. Like thinking, "You won't ever die because of me".
Maybe because I am already becoming so much more sensitive and conscious of the irrationality and self-destructing effects of eating animal products, "Vegucated", with its expose of the realities of factory farming, really effected me hard and made me feel so glad that I have given up animal products completely.
Some here say that this movie was too blunt and gruesome, pushing animal rights activism, but that is not how I see it at all.
The truth of how animals have to suffer, so that people can destroy their own health and their children's health by eating animal flesh is a reality that everyone needs to know. If you find the realities of factory farming offensive, then don't contribute to it.
I worked on a dairy for a few years when I was younger, and I seen some of the cruelty that these dairy cows face pretty regularly.
Also, the truth of how factory farming of livestock is destroying our planet, is a reality that everyone needs to be aware of and, although it is not the main theme of this movie, it does point it out clearly.
The fact that chronic diseases, like cancer, heart disease, strokes and type 2 diabetes, need not exist in America, or anywhere, if people would only embrace a whole food-plant based vegan lifestyle, needs to come out in the open.
This movie brings this information to viewers in a very informative and entertaining format.
Everyone needs to become "Vegucated" and this is a wonderful movie that is very worth watching.

A definite peice of propaganda, not all in a bad way. They did a good job of highlighting the environmental impact of conventional farming and production; however, the bit about how Oreo's and other junk food are "Vegan" was disappointing.
Taking completely unhealthy people in every way and having them go Vegan is of course going to make them feel "great" and have the most dramatic reaction....smoke and mirrors. The producers used disadvantged people; a young, obese, urban Hispanic female of immigrant parents, a 27 year-old low-income male who is a struggling actor and seeking to get his name in some produced work, and finally, a female medical doctor (psychyatrist) who is a single mother of two and lives in very unkempt and poor housing conditions. I was shocked at the contrast between her living conditions and that of the "expert vegan" doctor who was interviewed.
Documentary was definitley low budget, as it was slow going in the beginning, poorly produced, contained shoddy and low quality camera-work, and had a script to match.
Do your own research on nutrition and being Vegan.

Making healthy changes isn't always easy, so IMO it was great that this film showed/discussed slaughterhouse practices and those adopted on "small" farms. I've heard that we eat fear, but now I see exactly what that means. I don't need a bunch of studies to know that isn't good. The chemical changes taking place within those poor animals and the conditions in which they are raised are not something I want to take part in. I'm so glad I wasn't a milk drinker as a kid. I would much rather the baby cow gets it's share. Unbelievable. Maybe they aren't ALL that way, but I know the majority are and that's enough for me. Time to try tofu.

This fast paced and reasonably entertaining movie looks at the myths of "Old MacDonald's farm," versus the realities of modern handling of animals raised for food, and also covers the issue of why would people choose to be vegan. Is it difficult? Why would you want to? etc. It isn't necessary in America to kill to eat. There are health benefits to a vegan lifestyle. Everyone has roadblocks to making any major changes in their lifestyle, and this is a lifestyle change. Like any decision, one should gather up facts first, and then decide what works for them. This is a good fact-based look at why one might want to become vegan.

I like the approach the director took in helping her students become vegan. It was great how she eased them into the diet because the change can be so daunting. I was hoping there wouldn't be any graphic animal scenes, but there were. I feel that it is necessary to show them because we as consumers need to know how our food and other products are created. The director was thorough. Overall this was a happy film. I recommend watching it. It would be a great documentary for a beginner or someone that might be interested in exploring a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. This documents regular people on an adventure. What they find is life changing.

I actually learned things that I had not previously known before and it was very engaging to be brought into 3 people's journey to knowledge.
Of course it doesn't tell you everything there is to know about being a vegan. It's a documentary, not a thesis. There is so much information out there about this topic, it's hard to fit everything in that people think need to be included. This was an awesome film that brings the viewer into the journey, and that was wonderful and I felt as though I learned a lot. Well done.
