Better than Medela

After discovering that Madela bags can make your milk smell and taste rancid, I switched. But, I also did a little comparison work:

Lansinoh bags can hold up to 6 ounces of breast milk.
Medela bags can hold up to 5 ounces of breast milk.

Lansinoh: On the simplest level, the Lansinoh bag is easier to open and pour milk into than the Medela bag. The reason I find it easier is because of the material the bag is made out of and the bag is more pliable. You open the bag by removing a small strip that is perforated on the top. There are two seals on these bags, which is a huge plus. It's a comfort in preventing leaks.

The reason why Lansinoh wins the freezing process is because they lay flat very well. I've found that when laid flat, the bag freezes into a solid rectangle of milk that is consistent in thickness. It is also easy to "stack" once frozen which is very helpful for organizing. It's also important to squeeze all the air out of the bag which is much easier to do since there is not a large plastic section at the top, like in the Medela bags.

Medela: The Medela bags have the ability to be attached directly to a pump. As a result, there is a large plastic area on the top of the bag that is perforated. This makes these bags a little bit more awkward to open.

Lansinoh: Since these bags are fantastic for the freezing process, they are easier to thaw because they are consistently the same thickness. They look like a perfect rectangle of frozen milk. Or you can freeze the bag standing up. My husband loves how easy it is to thaw these out. Way easier than Medela.

Medela: Bag leaks when you thaw it and sometimes they leak in the freezer (which really is a mess). This is because there is only one seal instead of the double seal on the Lansinoh bags.

Our least favorite breastmilk storage bags

We have used four brands of breastmilk storage bags: Nuk, Honeysuckle, Medela, and Lansinoh. It's worth noting that we haven't had a leak with any of the bags, but we primarily use them for refrigeration. Based on other reviews, the "true" test of the bags seems to be freezing and subsequently thawing them. We have frozen and thawed a few of each brand with no leakage.

Nuk: These are our favorites. They are slightly smaller (maybe half a centimeter?) than Honeysuckle and Lansinoh bags, but you're not supposed to put more than 6 ounces in any of them anyway. They stand up the best, which is very convenient when pouring milk into them. I do hold the bags while I pour it in, but every now and then I lose my grip and these don't fall over like the Honeysuckle and Lansinoh bags. The plastic is thicker than the Lansinoh bags. These are also available at Wal-Mart, which is convenient if you can't wait for an amazon order to be delivered. The area where you write on is clear, and it's white with the other bags. I prefer the white background, but that's because I have black countertops. Small potatoes, though. The measurement is pretty close to the Medela bottles I pump in to. These are usually about 18-20 cents a bag depending on the quantity you purchase.

Honeysuckle: Our second favorite, these bags have more of a vinyl feel than a plastic feel. They're floppier than the Nuk bags, but more sturdy than the Lansinoh bags. The seal makes a clicking sound (like a Ziploc bag) when sealed, which is nice. The Nuk bags don't make that sound. My husband has had issues with the bags dripping milk out of the seal area when pouring instead of about a centimeter above the seal, where it is supposed to pour out of. The measurement seems to be off by half an ounce compared to the Medela bottles (if I pump 4.5 ounces, it will read as 4 ounces on these bags). These are about 18-20 cents a bag unless you buy a quantity of 300, in which they are 14 cents a bag (based on pricing as of July 2013). These are only available online, at least in my area (Virginia Beach).

Medela: These bags could be convenient for some because you pump directly into the bags. They work just fine, but I just prefer the bottles in case I adjust while pumping the milk can't splash out. They are a stiff plastic, which means they stand up well. They only hold about 5 ounces (compared to the 6 ounces for the other bags...but I've put 9 ounces in the other bags with no issue). They are a little harder to pour out of because of the design of the bag (the milk comes out about an inch above the seal). The measurement is accurate to the Medela bottles. They are also available in retail stores (Babies R Us, some Wal-Marts). These are more expensive at about 30 cents a bag.

Lansinoh: It's a shame that these bags are the most widely available, because they are the worst. They're thin, floppy, and have very little seam allowance. Based on other reviews, the bags changed in 2011. Prior to that, they were great, which is why the reviews on amazon are so high. They are about 18-20 cents a bag. They work fine in a pinch, but there are better options out there for the same (or better!) price.

do not stand up to shipping frozen breast milk; better options

We have twins and are having frozen breast milk shipped to us via fedex twice a week on a combination of wet ice and freezer packs in a styrofoam container (Insulated Shipping Containers, 13 3/4" x 11 3/4" x 11 7/8"; http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZJSH3I/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_6). The bags were not overfilled and were frozen flat. We found out early that some bags do not hold up well so I ordered every single breast milk bag I could and kept track of how they did (I am a scientist). Here are the results from worst to best (NOTE: this review is most relevant if you are shipping breast milk as fedex is not gentle on packages; if you are not shipping other bags we don't like might be fine but I can tell you which is best overall). Hope you can learn from our experience.

Honeysuckle breast milk storage bags: terrible. More than half of these broke during shipping whereas in the same shipment other bag types held up well. I would avoid these.

Lansinoh breast milk storage bags: second worst. About 1/4-1/3 of these typically broke/leaked upon shipping. It is not hard to tell they are the flimsiest. P.S. If you use these, a tip I found to help thaw them is to put each bag in a zip lock so it the bag leaks you can still use what stays in the bag (versus what leaks into the ziplock).

Medela breast milk storage bags: ok, not great. Hold up better than Honeysuckle and Lansinoh. About 1/6 - 1/5 of these would break/leak. They are also more difficult to pour out of and tend to lose a little milk in the pouring process (trick is to pour fast out of these).

Ameda breast milk storage bags: never used them as they come with twist ties and not ziplock seals.

Dr. Brown's breast milk storage bags: work great. never had one break. stand up well on their own. very easy to pour out of. Recommended except there is an option just as good and cheaper.

NUK/Gerber Seal N Go Disposible Liner: the winner! One bag out of very many has leaked. Stayed intact even when other bags did not survive. Good to pour out of (not as easy as Dr. Brown's but good enough). Thaw well. Better priced than Dr. Brown's (which is why we went with these).
