This groundbreaking series (exceptional real film, and sound recordings) from the early 1990's is being promoted now (2017) because a brand new 25-year anniversary series is about to be released on a well known premier pay network and they are trying to reinvigorate old fans and to bring in new ones as the debut of the new series nears.

When the original series first aired in April 1990, the promotion mantra was, "Who killed Laura Palmer?" As a result, most people, myself included, were drawn to the series by that one unanswered question. Consequently for the producers of the series, when that question was answered in December of 1990, a big portion of the audience lost interest, or were confused, since most thought the whole purpose of Twin Peaks was to solve the murder of Laura Palmer, and perhaps that of Teresa Banks (who was mentioned early in the series, and was more prominently featured in the movie "Fire Walk With Me", which was released after the series ended in 1991.)

The series never recovered from this marketing mistake, since most fans, like myself, did not realize at the time that Twin Peaks was originally intended to be an all-in-one "nighttime soap opera" (PG-13 by today's standards) that was to have drama, mystery, horror, comedy, and sci-fi all wrapped up in the stories of the residents of the fictitious town of Twin Peaks, tucked into the NE corner of Washington state (USA) just south of the Canadian border. So in the first 17 of the 30 total episodes aired, few people got invested in any of the stories of other Twin Peaks residents, that were not directly related to the murder of Laura Palmer.

This revolutionary series is a bit dated now, although, as I said at the beginning, the audio and video are exceptional, and they play well on HD and in surround sound. You should watch this if you plan on watching the new Twin Peaks coming out in 2017 just to get the background on some of the characters who will show up in the new series.

I really enjoyed watching twin peaks. The show has this incredibly unique feel that no other show that I've seen has even bordered upon. It's odd and truly distinict, but never feels frivolous or contrived.

The only real drawback to the show that I see is its pacing. Today in 2016, a typical detective show will solve a murder in every episode. Twin Peaks spends an entire season on a single murder that isn't even completely resolved in the first season. However, I feel that while this pace may feel slow at times, I also tend to think that this slow pace is part of the shows charm. This slow pace let's you live in the town of Twin Peaks, it let's you explore it's atypical characters as window into a different way to do tv.

The real pull to the show is it's unusual set and setting. The town of Twin Peaks is full of interesting characters that you get to know as you watch the show, and you will learn to love or hate these characters as lynch exposes them on your TV set. Lynch excels in almost every aspect of film making, and Twin Peaks is a prime example of his sureal style. But his style is somewhat toned down from his films which makes this a great entryway for those who are not already familiar with the lynchian style.

By far my biggest complaint is in the finale. To me, the ending to season one wasn't quite the ending I had hopped for. But despite the somewhat anti-climactic end, I really enjoyed season one, and I'm looking forward to a hopefully even better season two. The somewhat drab ending was not weak enough to sour my entire experience. If you think you would enjoy a sureal, lynchian take on the mystery genre this is the exact show for you. This is where it begins: series television as art.

Before Twin Peaks, there were miniseries that qualified, for sure. And some really fine half hour comedies. But Twin Peaks was the first network series to marry night time serial drama (Dallas/Dynasty) with "serious" literary and cinematographic weight and mysteries/questions that never find easy answers. Directed by a guy whose name has become an adjective. Stylistic doesn't begin to describe it. Twenty-six years later, the series still gets referenced on the regular, obliquely and dead outright.

This is something you should watch at least a little of just to understand the cultural references that you are knee deep in, whether you know it or not.

The music reminds me of the 'Pink Panther". the acting is not realistic, perhaps corny is a better word for it. The plot of the movie is about a murder of a young girl and even though I have watched only the 1st episode I am wondering if it is worth my time to watch anymore. If just for curiosity sake I might watch one or two more episodes but if it doesn't get any more interesting I don't plan on spending my time on this one. If I change my mind I will change this review.

Besides the fact David Lynch amazes me, I feel right at home watching this film being a 6th generation native of Washington from a small town. He knows how to capture the essence of any character I have run into here but also captures how landscapes, climate, and geography can influence the culture of a place.

This was my first time watching the show and I'm glad I waited so I could better appreciate the simple brilliance and nuance that was hidden throughout the show. I had watched McMullen Drive when I was 19 and it scared and confused me because I had so little life and character study experience.
I knew that the show was strange and was scared because strange in the eighties and nineties was not a good thing. This however is delightful and comes around in the end and delivers a very good story.
