A Brilliant, Unflinching Look at Western Civilization in Rapid Decline

As usual Mark Steyn manages to be hilarious, erudite, and dead-serious at the same time. He pulls no punches in After America, and while reading this excellent book, I frequently didn't know whether to laugh or cry. The author's command of the evidence is undeniable, and his vivid descriptions of the decline of Western Civilization are both frightening and familiar. Crushing debt, out-of-control immigration, denial, and near-universal insouciance are rapidly destroying the West -- right now.

Will the American people take heed of the dreary (and increasingly dangerous) state of our world and face up to our responsibilities as citizens of the sole super-power, or will we remain paralyzed and incapable of taking action until it is, quite simply, too late?

This is an alarming tale by Mark Steyn. But the book is well researched and Steyn points out the alarming trends that will ultimately change the face.of the earth. It's a numbers game with demographics and the big loser is the culture and fiber of declining nation's whom don't produce enough off spring to keep their cultures alive . The big winners in the numbers game is Muslims and the big losers are everyone else.

Mark Steyn is quite an entertaining writer/speaker, spot on on a lot of issues, on a number of issues I disagree with him but then I'm somewhat moderate in my political views, neither way right or left on most things. Well-wrtten and amusing. He has a talent for the entertaining turn of phrase. He's right about the deficit for one thing. If the country doesn't get a handle on its finances things will get dire fairly soon. His comparison of America and Britain and the onset of decline is quite interesting. On the nature of Islam and the threat it poses I'm afraid he's correct, it's simply the current phase of an historic clash of civilizations based on fundamentally different ideas. This is a problematic view of things, another inconvenient truth we're trying to avoid, but at the very least we should be having a vigorous debate about it and what we should do before it's too late. It's unfortunate how in America these days people with different views on things tend to dig in on their positions with a take no prisoners mindset. The Bible says, "Let us sit down and reason together".

A must-read book

On some issues I disagree with Mark Stein. That being said, I have always enjoyed his writing, from his old columns in the British magazine, the Spectator, to his books, of which I have read several. This book is his best work yet. It lays open the tragic path that the West has taken, from the demographic decline that has doomed the welfare states of Europe, to the political correctness that makes our societies afraid to even talk about the existentialist threat posed by Islam, to the probability that the wanton fiscal irresponsibility of our local, state, and federal bureaucrats will probably lead to the financial collapse of the United States. He points out shocking truths about our education system and the legalized stealing committed by all levels of government. This is the best-made case I have yet seen made that government needs to be much smaller if we are to survive.

Even if you disagree with Stein's conclusions, you should read this book, first, because it's always a good idea to hear all sides of an argument, and second, because Stein is among the smartest and wittiest writers that you are likely to encounter in 21st century journalism.

Steyn Nails It Again

In his trademarked sarcasm laced wit Mark Steyn lays bare for all to see the irritating failures of modern society. All the things that rub the average Joe the wrong way in his daily interactions with his government, his culture, and his daily routine are viewed from 30,000 feet and shown to be, as some of us may have suspected, indicative of a broader decay of our culture and its institutions. His predictions for the possible shape of the ramifications of such decline are startling not in that they're outlandish, but that they don't seem so unbelievable. His perspective as a foreigner who has lived in several Western Democracies mired in varying degrees of Statism that chose to make the United States his home makes his narrative all the more intriguing for the insights he brings from his experience.

Other reviewers do a much better job than me of laying out the contents and themes. Take their reviews to heart. I was already keen on his writing after being given a copy of America Alone, but with After America Mr. Steyn has made me a full fledged fan.

The implications and conclusions are frightening, but oddly, you'll find yourself chuckling aloud at his telling of each sordid tale of government abuse, example of cultural decay, and detailing of a demographic time bomb.

I liked it, but it ran on a little bit and some of the horror stories of the left seemed to be missing a key sentence here and there that made it difficult to connect the dots and the complete story of how the Left, (COMMUNISTS) are destroying this country piece by piece. Between the welfare state and the national debt (welfare state obozocare) the american people are getting screwed.
