It appeared to load the "BTW" bluetooth software properly, and windows recognized the usb adapter as a bluetooth device, but the bluetooth manager would not allow me to do anything. I would go to "add new bluetooth device" and it would say "no bluetooth devices detected. Make sure they are powered on and connected" I got so frustrated and spent 3 hours searching the web for answers and none fit my problem. Enter the solution: I noticed when you install the BTW software package/drivers from IOGear's website, it download broadcom/widcomm drivers for bluetooth. But these don't work for some reason. So I did a little research and came upon broadcom's website and downloaded THEIR bluetooth software package/drivers and it works great now. I guess the IOGear USB dongle uses drivers from broadcom, but the ones they have listed on their website re way out of date or incompatible. INSTRUCTIONS: Go to Broadcom's website and download their USB Bluetooth Driver/Install Package [...]. During the install you will notice it looks different than the useless driver package IOGear tried to supply. When you start the install package make sure the USB dongle IS plugged in so it can be detected and the driver package will take care of the rest. NOTE: you don't have to worry about un-installing any old bluetooth drivers on your computer. The broadcom driver package will remove them automatically and replace them. Bluetooth upgrade for Mac

I plugged this into an Early 2009 Mac Mini. The Mac immediately disabled the built-in Bluetooth 2.0, and the USB Bluetooth 4.0 works great. I can now use Authy Bluetooth with my iPhone 5. I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.4, and no driver hacks were needed. It was plug and play.

I couldn't ask for more for decently under $20.

Works fantastic with windows 7, great range, very happy. Unfortunetly its not plug and plan, i had to use the cd to get it to work and it put on about 6 garbage programs that i cant delete. What a shame. If anyone figures out how to get the drivers without the garbage please post. I couldnt find it on the website. Otherwise im very happy with the product.

Finally got this working on my iMac

I recently bought an iRig Blueboard MIDI controller, which requires Bluetooth 4.0. I have a late 2009 iMac, running Mavericks 10.9.1, with a built in Bluetooth 2.1 adapter. I had 1 USB port available on the back of my iMac, and I used this port to attach IOGear dongle. Don't know if this dongle will work on a USB hub. I knew before I bought the Blueboard that it wouldn't work with my bluetooth adapter, so I took a chance on buying the IOGear adapter (GBU521), and hoped I could get it to work on my iMac. After much research I found that while the OS should support this device, the OS would always default back to the original bluetooth adapter. I couldn't get it to switch over to the new adapter, until I found a post in this Amazon review section for this device.

The other reviewer, who used a laptop in his review, stated that if you booted up with the IOGear dongle removed, turned off bluetooth, plugged in the IOGear dongle, and then turned bluetooth back on, it would now switch over to the IOGear dongle. It worked as he stated, but also as he stated, when you rebooted it went back to the built in adapter.

I tried an experiment, which ultimately worked for me anyway. I booted up with the IOGear dongle removed. I plugged in a wired USB mouse, which you will need after you disable your bluetooth mouse. I then disconnected (unpaired) my bluetooth keyboard and mouse. After doing that, and now using the USB mouse, I then turned off bluetooth. I plugged in the IOGear dongle and turned bluetooth back on. I verified that the IOGear dongle was working. I then went into system preferences for the mouse and keyboard and reconnected (paired) my bluetooth mouse and keyboard, which made them now paired to the new IOGear dongle. When I rebooted, the system now defaulted to the new IOGear Bluetooth 4.0 adapter.

With my desktop, I had a bluetooth keyboard and mouse that were required items in the system. In order to make them available, I suspect the OS was forced to choose the IOGear adapter in order to make a keyboard and mouse available. Whatever the reason, my keyboard, mouse, and Blueboard and all now happy with Bluetooth 4.0. Don't know what to say for people with laptops which have have built in keyboards and trackpads. Also, I don't know if this procedure works with other brands of Bluetooth adapters. Seems like if the OS has support for the device, this procedure should work for them too. Anyway, this is my 2 cents.

How does anyone even use this?

I order one, and it didn't fit into a USB port on my desktop. Compared it to a UBS drive, the overall metal casing is the same size, but the plastic insert is much thicker, and doesn't allow room for the motherboard's chip with pins on it. I tried it on my work laptop, several desktops at work. Didn't fit.
Ordered a replacement. Same story. Kind of weirded out that it has a high rating as it appears that it cant even fit into USB ports. So not sure how anyone is using this...
Tried to take a photo to show the narrower opening on the Iogear vs a SanDisk thumbdrive but the camera wouldn't focus properly. Best of luck to you if you decide to buy it!

Works Well With My Late 2011 MacBook Pro

The adapter is very small, which I believe is a good thing. Makes it a little noticeable. The adapter does not wiggle when connected, as a lot of usb adapters are prone to do. Once inserted, it takes a little bit of effort to remove.

I bought this for my late 2011 MacBook Pro, so that I could take advantage of the continuity features found in Yosemite and iOS 8 and my iPhone 6.

I downloaded the Continuity Activator Tool (ver. 2) found here (https://github.com/dokterdok/Continuity-Activation-Tool) and in 5 minutes or just under, my MBP was setup and able to take advantage of the new features.

I have found the range of the IOGEAR adapter to be commensurate with my iPad Air (approximately 30 ft). For those with older MBP's who don't want to go the route of opening your Mac up and installing a new card, this adapter makes thing much easier.

Thus far, I am pleased and do recommend the adapter to other Mac users.

Troublesome on older Mac Pros
