Arthur Schopenhauer was a German philosopher who lived from 1788-1860; he was influenced among others by Plato and Immanuel Kant, and in his turn influenced Friedrich Nietzsche, Ludwig wittgenstein, Thomas Mann and others. Schopenhauers work is known for its pessimistic views and beautifully written essays. If you like reading philosophy -or would like to try it- then I can recommend reading some of Schopenhauers essays.

This volume contains 9 essays written by Schopenhauer and translated by T.Bailey Saunders, M.A.. These essays where first published in 1851 in 'Pererga und Paralipomena'. The printed edition has 96 pages. This book includes his (in)famous essay on women, it shows a very negative view on women. I copy a paragraph from this essay at the bottom of this review. I (female) found this essay very amusing, even though he did not mean it in jest and shows his hurt (I think, but this is still being discussed). This volume of essays is a very good example of Schopenhauers work: it shows how beautifully he could write, and it also shows his pessimism for which he is wellknown and which is the core of his philosophy.

The content of this volum:
ON THE SUFFERINGS OF THE WORLD
ON THE VANITY OF EXISTENCE
ON SUICIDE
IMMORTALITY: A DIALOGUE
PSYCHOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
ON EDUCATION
OF WOMEN
ON NOISE
A FEW PARABLES

From the essay 'Of women':

Schopenhauer is by far the greatest philosopher ever lived. He built on Kant's work but surpassed him.
The main work that contains the real bulk of his ideas specially the concept of the Will is his book The World As Will and Representation, In Two Volumes: Vol. I & II. All his subsequent books are to explain whatever in these two books. He expanded his concepts in the two volumes of Parerga and Paralipomena.
The two subjects that stamped Schopenhauer with pessimism are "On the suffering of the world and "On the vanity of Existence" are the forefront of this selection of essays contained in this book.
This book reveals the inner nature of the world and shows that life is a mistake and somthing ought not to be as Schopenhauer put it.
For the completion of Schopenhauer philosophy I recommend the book The Will's Harmonic Motion: The Completion of Schopenhauer's Philosophy.

Seventy-six pages seems like an ideal length for a book of philosophical essays, especially on pessimism, but this is really an accessible, readable collection.

The first two essays are essential to Schopenhauer's philosophy; they touch on boredom, misfortune, suffering, disappointment, and the inevitability of death, and of course the will-to-life. One of his most famous lines--"It is bad to-day, and it will be worse to-morrow; and so on till the worst of all"--comes very early on.

But don't be turned off by his vision. Knowing that our lives are filled with work and worry and bad luck and unhappiness leads us to live better, with "tolerance, patience, regard, and love of neighbor." Compassion is key.

John Lennon famously said that life is what happens while you're busy making other plans. Well, Schopenhauer got there first:

"We look upon the present as something to be put up with while it lasts, and serving only as the way towards our goal. Hence most people, if they glance back when they come to the end of life, will find that all along they have been living ad interim: they will be surprised to find that the very thing they disregarded and let slip by unenjoyed, was just the life in the expectation of which they passed all their time."

As for the rest of the collection, well, it gets a little spotty after his brief defense of suicide. His execrable "On Women" is not just dated but downright misogynistic: "in a word, they are big children all their life."

The short piece "On Noise" is just a curmudgeonly rant on the annoying sound of whipcracks.

The surprise is how one can compare Schopenhaur to other crap available on Kindle. The questions are the same for s*** literature as the questions are for classics? This leads one to question why people spend time typing.

Philosophy that I can understand. A lot of 20th century philosophy is too difficult for me. However, i find this is a good introduction for an entry point. A bridge between Plato, Aristotle and the more difficult stuff by Wittgenstein. It is pretty old but still relevant. I would reccomend, definately worth the money, lol.

A nicely articulated philosophical collection on worth-examining topics. While one may not submit to Schopenhauer's analyses, he generously gives an occasion to examine one's preconceived thoughts on human suffering, existence, suicide, immortality, education, women, and noise. While reading the essay on women, I had to, for a moment, ride back in time to be in the shoes of Schopenhauer in the 18th century. The discussion on noise is surprisingly interesting.
