Contacted EVGA support, they thought there may have been damaged cpu pins, interestingly I see that in another review here. Generally I have been very happy with EVGA products. Returning the board and will update the review when the next one arrives.
Updated replacement board was sent out straight away, FEDEX delivered it on Saturday by actually throwing the box onto my porch from about 20 feet away, it tumbled down a couple of steps. my wife witnessed this, no doorbell ring, just kinda get close and tossed onto my porch. Probably should put up a backboard with a net for FEDEX deliveries. Wonder if that was the reason for the first board to be bad. Oh well on to the review.
First off my dealings with EVGA have always been good and support has always been good. I just cant recommend this board because of the layout of the board itself, the 90 degree connection points will cause you pain, this board does not fit properly even in the largest of PC cases. That said the board offers some great options.
The on board digital error code display is worth the additional money you pay for EVGA. Seriously, this is a time saver and you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to know what is going on. The on board power and reset switches are also great time savers. EVGA does a very good job with documentation, graphical call outs of almost the entire board. This is a feature of every board they sell and again for a builder this really is worth the extra money for the board.
Not every USB is 3.0 compatible, the label plate for the boards sound, usb, network is back with small lettering and not very legible, you need a lot of light to see the labels.
I've had this board for well over a month now and to get this board to overclock is a nightmare!!!!! I've had to rest bios 500 times in all my attempts to get this thing overclocked. Stock setting boots fine when it feels like it, My cpu I7 3770k sometimes it will overclock to 4.0 or 4.2 or 4.4 or even 4.6.I will stress test , all working good. And in a day or two go to turn computer on and for no reason it will not boot. Average time to get it to boot hours reset to stock, flip switch to different bios, load defaults etc. etc...etc.. and then poof it boots, but only after several I mean several attempts to the point of frustration. And to get this board to accept new bios settings one in particular memory several saves are required to get the board to accept the change. And it's not only this board a buddy of mine has same problems , he returned board after speaking to tech support only to receive another board that has all the same problems. Read all the forums [...] everyone is having problems with this board. Why The BIOS!!!!!!! Why would a reputable company like (EVGA) release a motherboard with a half a-- bios that is full of problems and cause us the consumer headache after headache and take us to the breaking point of saying I'M done with this board, it cost me $330 + $20 for extended warranty and I can't do what the board promises. Well I ordered the ASUS p8z77v deluxe board using the same components as I did in the EVGA board upon first boot all was great installed windows installed there AI SUITE II software I was able to update the latest bios flawless and ran their overclocking software that automatically adjust all settings in bios and stress test each settings as it goes along and when it loses stability it automatically reverts back to last solid settings. WoW no headaches I was overclocking at current 4.8 in less than 30 minutes and it's been stable for over a week not a single problem not a single bios reset. Man I wish I would have done a little more research before I bought this EVGA board but I've always bought EVGA motherboards and video cards in the past. Now I can honestly say that I will be looking at Asus in the future if EVGA does not get their act together. Come on EVGA take a look at ASUS and their auto overclocking software and the price originally $60 cheaper. I'll hang on to this board for a month or so to see if EVGA figures out their bios problems and if they don't I guess I'll be sell this board on Ebay at a steep discount so I can recoup some of my money back.. Now I know why amazon only has 1 review and Newegg has 8 reviews of customers input, obviously after much research no one is buying the EVGA Z77 board.
Awesome board for an enthusiast build - probably one of the easiest to setup as well. The on-board LED for error-codes is awesomely helpful (poorly seated ram up front - easily detected). The temperature for the CPU-plate is reasonably correct (based on figures from CPU-z, HWMonitor, etc.). EVGA's E-Leet software for overclocking from within the OS isn't entirely functional yet, but it should get going. 4-Way SLI, good support from the EVGA folks, and nice color-scheme. Pretty nice board. Wish it'd have been a bit cheaper though. ASUS Maximus V Formula goes for $50 less at the moment. Definitely rec'd. So far 2+ weeks and no issues. Fit my enormous Noctua NH-D14 on it (no warping of board, etc.); easily OC'd to 4.5GHz on air with 1.25V for i7-3770k with it. Definitely loads of OC'ing options in the BIOS. The latest BIOS revision has been stable as well - no issues with any of my hardware (USB, SATA, etc.).
So far this board has worked just as expected. No issues whatsoever as far as installation and setup. The board has an impressive amount of features which should keep you busy for a while. My only gripe is with the board's BIOS. It isn't lacking in features, it's just very sub-par to the 'quality' feel of competitor's motherboards. It's ugly, awkward, and extremely undescriptive with its options and features. It becomes easier once you spend some time in it, but for such a new board, I would have liked to have seen a nice pretty EFI GUI BIOS. But, other than that, the EVGA Z77 is rock solid and performs outstanding.
